Mr drlvrr'i Oftlcr o IJonble Life
of luian'lrni'H l.iinip*.
Jlr. T. K. Mclver. head clerk of
tre l> Sjlo Hotel, has applied for a
patent on a little device which li of In
icrcet to all users of incandescent lights
jl Mclver rroposas by lila device to
rl) ally double the life of every In
eandeacebt lamp equipped with It. In
£0 lit ion to thla. It enable* the u*er to
joable or reduce the amount of light In
a room at will.
7 device consists of an ordinary In
lt i. j ont lamp globe equipped with two
6 ament* The double ttiament I* not a
f„iure. but the attachment to tho
Unip by which either one or both flla
may be brought Into u*e at will
p the important feature and the one
wwch It I* believed will attract the at
iri tion of u*i r* of Incandeacent light*,
it practically doubiea tho life of the
lamp. well a* enable* the amount of
light need to be increased for (pedal
occasions.
Th.. Idea first occurred to Mr. Mclver
when he was at the White Sulphur
Spniv- In l&hi The hotel was using a
large number of Incandescent lights, and
It was necessary to order frequent freah
supplies Happening to be In the ongl
neer's nom one day, Mr. Mclver no
ticed a large box full of old Incandescent
lamps, which had evidently been cajt
abides He asked the engineer If It would
no- he well to save Iheae lamp* and ahtn
them hack to the factory, but the engi
neer related that as the fartory only al
low'd a ent and a half for each lamn
returned, the trouble and cost of pack
ing and *hli>ptng would about offset any
return from this source
This "*’t Mr Mclver to thinking If some
wav could not he devised to Increase the
life of the lamp*, a* each lamp repre
sented an expenditure of 3) cents The
Idea f the double filament naturally oc
curred to him. but was hardly original
gny electrician could put two filaments
Ihto a lamp. The question was how to
make use of the filaments Independently
of each other, so that one could succeed
the other Mr Mclver accomidlshed this
successfully by mean* of a cap at the
base of the lamp, by screwing down which
the see nd filament could be brought Into
use when needed
This accomplished the object all right,
but the fact that It was necessary to un
screw the lamp from the socket and then
chance the position of fhe cap was found
to he sn obstacle *o the popularity of the
Invention. Mr. Mclver did not give up hts
Idea, however, hut rontlntied to Investi
gate the subject. While In New York last
rummer he secured the of a
friend who ho* some talent In electrical
work ami the latter suggested an Im
provement Ity which the use of the fila
ment* Is regulated by a small copper wire
ring running around the neck of the
turner near the base. This accomplish-,
ed the purpose and made It possible to
regulate the light In less time than It
take* to tell about It
Mr Mclver ha* one of the lamps t
tached to n gas Jet In the office of the Dc
Bp4o. connected, of course, with the elec
tor ligh* system of the hotel. The lamp
ts equipped with two of the ordinary fila
ment*. such as are used in every Incan
descent light Ordinarily, but one Is
mipposed to he In use. but by simply
shifting the iif'le ropper ring for a quar
ter of an Inch the second light Is brought
Into play A IS-enndle-pnwrr lamp can
thus he converted Into K-rsnjle-powrr
lamp In less than a quarter of a second
Mr Mclver'* Idea Is that for ordinary
uses the consumers would simply use one
filament at a time, the advantage being
that In this way the life of the lamp would
he doubled and a considerable Item of ex
pense saved. It would also be a great
rorvenlenre to users of Incandescent
light*, he think* to he able to increase
•he amount of l'ght in n room for special
salons If half a dngen lamps In a
roc* are sufficient for ordinary purposes
Ipe ability to double the amount of light
r toporarily hy burning hoih filaments
would be a considerable advantage
Mr Mclver does not expect that the In
vention will prove popular with the manu
facturers. ns It Is lo their Interest to have
as many lamp* sold as possible, hut he
thinks It will prove popular with con
sumer* whose hills will thereby be dc
ere.a*ed The lamp Is con'd meted sn as to
fit any socket which will be a considerable
argument In It* favor with consumers.

Hmoke was seen Issuing from the old

was turned In from box No. ft, to which
the fire department responded.
From the amount of smoke Issuing from
the building It seemed us If there might
be a considerable conflagration In trog

open the doors, however and got In
their streams they found that the con
flagration was not important.
The building, it developed, has been In

known as O. Mertln* & Cos. The garbage
was brought to the building by the scav

Naturally, there was a considerable quan

and It was In the heap of this material
that the tire originated, and. In fact, re
mained.
