Saturday, Nov. 24.
The developments of the day In the cot
ton market served lo strengthen the be
lief that the orderly manner In which
prices have moved up Indicates that the
present level la to be maintained, with
the prospects favorable for a further ma
terial advance. Savannah apota were
marked up 1-ltr and the offerings from
the Interior ruled - firm at from 10 l*lßc to
10 2-lOe, with holdera ehowtng no Inclina
tion to do business on other than their
own terms.
The general condition! pr- ailing at
present In the cotton maiket offer a
striking opportunity for hoi l-ra to demon
strate to fotmer holders the folly of get
ting unduly frightened at a decline, I’n
}eta all signs fall holdera have It In their
lower to control the situation with the
stocks In their hands. The slump a few
woks ago unnerved practically all of the
wak holdera, who took fright at the
sharp decline# and dumped cotton on the
ina-ket thereby fee,ling the movement
launched by the beats to hamnor prices.
AH the present holders, or enough of them
to largely Influence the sentiment of the
whole, clung to their cotton through the
trying days of (he slump, when It was
predicted by the bears that prices would
dreitnc to about last tear’s figures and
atav there. While It Is easier for prices to
drop tnan to climb the recovery has been
none the less rapid, and now that the rise
In spots has again crossed the ten-rent
level It may reasonably be expected to
go higher before stopping
fcnlnnera have already fal'en back on
thefr old tactics of the han 1-10-mouth pol
icy In an effort to stem tip tide While
this poll y has served them long they are
now confronted by conditions which may
compel them lo < hange their task if ih y
hO; e to accomplish anything In tha light.
Interior mills have ben In the market
for cotton for some lime at prices far
shove wnnt spinners are bidding, and
thereby Increasing the demand wnlch ha*
he i- l so laig'ly to Impart strength to
the spot market generally
The palpable reason of the ml Is for ac.
tlvely buying cotton ai this time Is that
they believe th prl -e Is going higher and
that they can get better cotton at lower
prices by obtaining their supplies early
As long as the, demand continues from mill
buyers the difference between the amount
of cotton taken under the present hand
to-mouth policy and that taken a here
tofore will be fully made up. This being
the case the hammering of spinners will
probably affect the market nio.it the
same ns water sou and a duck’s hack
With Neill's guess, comparatively light
receipts and a bullish undertone the out
look for thp market Is encouraging to
holders of cotton.
The spirits turpentine market closed
