|he Old Man Rained the Local
Sport*.
( . ;ootn jeep and dark rests like a pall
the Savannah chicken sports. Uncle
Miago has met them, and they are hls’n.
old man and his friend, the waiter,
" t k o ft with $215 of their money, and
the sports are broke.
The chief manager of the mains having
hts:d that Uncle Mingo was a “fancier,"
ash'd the old man if he had a chicken he
woU ld like to enter for a fight.
•; r old man allowed he had a "bud"
, t 1P would be willing to back, where
’[ he. was informed that the local con
tme,.rit had a rooster which they were
prepared to tight against anything that
had uings.
_ Sn it was arranged that Uncle Mingo
~ :ld bring down his "bud" In time for
|next weekly main.
- \eral years before, the old man had
caught a young eagle which he had car
rjc I home and put in his kitchen. The
bir had now grown up, and was tame,
lazy dirty and ungainly, but very strong,
M the appointed time, with his eagle ip
, covered basket on his arm, he proceed
ed with ills now inseparable friend, the
waft, to the scene of the main.
1 he sensational finish of the last main,
toge ther with the report that the old man
ha ,i , bird which he was foolish enough
t 0 ~it against the pride of the club, had
attra' tcd an unusually large attendance;
the house—i. e„ vacant lot—was full.
The earlier matches awakened little in
terest ; everybody was eager for the chief
event, which had been put last.
Tla manager then announced that the
closing event would be a fight between
M, Seipio Jenkins’ "Black Prince” and a
bird backed by Mr. Mingo Young, from
'Possum Hollow.
Black Prince” was produced; he was a
tine bird, though not very large, and had
ta-ily defeated everything put bfore him.
til eyes were centered upon Uncle
Mingo's basket. The old man raised the
cover and took out his eagle.
There was a general exclamation of sur
prise, which gradually changed to a long
howl of derision. Certainly a more un
prrenisiug looking bird could hardly be
imagined. He was very dirty and grimy,
and except on the wings and a patch on
ihe tail, had scarcely any feathers to
speak of.
Two to one on Black Prince!” was the
cry. and the stakes were soon up in the
hands of the referee. Uncle Mingo had no
trouble in finding S2OO against his $100; the
waiter, although feeling very dubious at
the sight of Uncle Mingo's champion,
loyally backed his friend to the extent of
Ms piie, and put up $7.30 against sls. Then
the birds were placed opposite to each
other In the pit.
The noble bird of freedom was evidently
annoyed at having his nap in the cosy
basket so rudely interrupter}, so on being
set down he at once relapsed into a condi
tion of somnolence, with his head drawn
down between his shoulders and his eyes
closed.
Then the fun began; the crowd thought
it beat a minstrel show.
"Black Prince” was clearly the most
astonished individual present, as he look
ed quizzically at the curious opponent be
fore him. After crowing a few times he
proceeded to dance sideways around the
eagle, and, as Uncle Mingo expressed it,
"played de banjo fust on one wing an’
den on de udder.” The eagle took no more
notice of him than if he had not been
there.
"Black Prince” did’nt know what to
make of it all; he stood fading his ad
versary with his head down and his neck
feathers in a ruffle.
The crowd shrieked with delight, when
tin rooster, to awaken his enemy, gave
him a sharp peck. This angered the
eagle; true he was not meddling with other
people's business, and yet they wouldn't
let him alone.
He skinned one eye open for about two
seconds, then shut it again and stepped
back en inch or so.
Finding his first attempt of no avail,
the rooster proceeded to harsher meas
ures. He hopped lightly in the air and
gave the inoffensive eagle a sharp dig,
causing shouts of laughter.
This was going too far; the eagle start
ed a little, and if the rooster had payed
more attention, he might have been
warned by the gleam from the eagle’s
eyes, both of which were now wide open,
ahhough his position was not changed.
Say, old man,” called out the owner
of “Black Prince,” “you better make your
bird sho r more fight.”
"You lum ’lone,” retorted Uncle Mingo;
”ef he ain’t got slnse ’nuff to take dare of
hisse’f, den dat he own lookout.”
The rooster now concluded it was time
to stop nil nonsense, to put an end to this
ridiculous affair, and win his owner's
money So he hopped up in the air again
to inflict the final coup de grace.
But the blow never landed. Instead a
most extraordinary thing occurred.
The eagle suddenly straightened out to
his full length. His left claw shot forth
and seized the rooster by the back, pin
ning him to the ground.
l hen with his right claw he grasped the
rooster’s neck and calmly pulled his head
off!

InNurani'F Cotnpnny Claim* Mr.
Archer Fuilpd to Remit.
The Springfield' Fire and Marine Insur
ance Company filed suit against John L.
Archer in the United States Circuit Court
yesterday morning. The suit is for $2,-
505.46, alleged to have been the amount of
collections made by Mr. Archer for the
company, while he was acting os its
agent in Savannah, during the year 1898.
The petition alleges that the defendant
is indebted to the plaintiff in the Amount
named, with interest from May. 1, 1898.
Appended to the petition is a bill of par
ticulars showing the balance alleged to
have been due the company at the close
of each of six months of 1898. It is al
leged that it was the duty of the defend
ant to make monthly returns and remit
tances to the company, and that the
amount alleged is due. after the deduction
of all proper allowances for commissions
and expenses.
It is charged that the correctness of
the amount claimed and that it is Just,
due and unpaid is not denied by the de
fendant. The plaintiff is represented by
Messrs. Charlton & Charlton.
FIREMEN LEAVE STABLES.
Temporary Headquarters on Con
gress Street Abandoned.
Tlie temporary tire station on. Congress
street, near West Broad, which was oc
cupied for several days by the men and
apparatus from headquarters, has been
abandoned. The electrical apparatus,
machines, horses and men returned to the
station on Indian street yesterday morn
ing, and are doing business now at their
old stand. The firemen are glad that they
have been returned to the Indian street
station, and they suffered much incon
venience in their temporary home in the
boarding stables. The change was made
because of the condition of I Allan street
in front of headquarters. The paving
has been completed at that point, and no
trouble is experienced in getting in and
out of the house.
The Big Duke and the bell for the
Thirty-eighth street station have not yet
arrived, although they were shipped from
Cincinnati several days ago.

THE MOKNING NEWS: THURSDAY. APRIL 25.1901.
DELAYED UNTIL TO-DAY.
Capt. Parse Salt! Hitts on MoTlng Dirt
Will Be Received.
Bids for moving dirt on the Dalei avenue
tract of the Merchants' and Mechanics'
Land Company to it properly for
Fair grounds and to construct a race
track were to have been received yester
day by Capt. D. G. Purse, president of
the company, but he decided to postpone
them one day. as several asked for more
time in order to make up their estimates.
Capt. Purse said many have expressed a
desire to do the work, as there is little
work going on Just now to keep niule
teams busy. For this reason, Capt.
Purse thinks, the work of grading Fair
grounds and building a track can be com
piished without great outlay.
The Fair directors have determined up
on this plan of bids and estimates to
cover all tracts considered by the com
mittee. The engineer of the Site Com
mittee will make an investigation at the
Dale avenue tract, just as at Ten Broeck
and at the Screven tract.
PREACHER KILLED DESPERADO.
Hr>an County Officers Have Been I n
able to Locate Him.
Ben Whitaker, the negro wanted in
Bryan county on a charge of murder, has
not yet been arrested, according to ad
vices received by Solicitor General L.
Gordon Harvey.
Whitaker is a colored preacher, and shot
Robert Golden at Groveland last Friday.
The wounded negro was removed to the
county Jail at Clyde and died on Sunday.
An account of the homicide was pub
lished in the Morning News Tuesday, but
at that time it was not known who had
fired the fatal shot. Whitaker and an
other negro were sent to spot Golden,
who was wanted on a peace warrant.
Golden was known as a desperate char
acter, and when he discovered the spotters
and made an effort to escape the preacher
fired a load of buckshot into his leg. The
wounded prisoner died from blood poison
ing, and Whitaker has not been seen
since, although the county officers have
been looking for him.

Test for Yourself the Wonderful
Curative Properties of Swamp-Root.
To Prove What the World-Famous Discovery, SWAMP-ROOT, Will Do for YOU,
Every Reader of the Savannah Daily News May Have a Sample Bottle Free.
To Readers of the Savannah Daily News;
For some time 1 suffered from a serious kidney trouble, and also gravel (cal
culi), which I believe was the result of carrying heavy loads and continual expos
ure. I had an almost continual pain in my back, was weak and run down generally.
1 fully realized that kidney disease was not only remarkably prevalent, but was also
one of the greatest dangers of my own employment, as a large percentage of the
deaths among letter carriers is due to some form of kidney trouble. After using
other remedies without satisfaction. I decided to try Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp-Root,
which is prepared in my own city and recommended by so many Binghamton peo
ple. Within a short time I realized a marked improvement, and in a reasonable
time a complete cure was accomplished. It has been some time since I have had to
use any of the remedy, and 1 have no fear of a recurrence of the trouble. Two of
my fellow carries (E. J. Casey and S. C. Sweeney) have also used Swump-Itoot for
about the same difficulty as mine, and with exactly the same results, and they
gladly join me in recommending the remedy to anyone who suffers from kidney,
litter or bladder disorders. Very truly yours,

How to Find Out if You
Need Swamp-Root.
j Weak and unhealthy kidneys arc re
sponsible for more sickness and suffering
than any other disease, and if permitted
to continue fatal results are sure to fol
low. Kidney trouble Irritates the nerves,
makes you dizzy, restless, sleepless and
Irritable. Makes you pass water often
during the day, and obliges you to get up
many times during the night. Causes
puffy or dark circles under the eyes,
rheumatism, gravel, catarrh of the blad
der, pain or dull ache in the back. Joints
and muscles, makes your head ache, and
back ache, causes Indigestion, stomach
and liver trouble; you get a sallow, yel
low complexion; makes you feel as
Ithough you had heart trouble; you may
have plenty of ambition, but no strength;
get weak and waste away.
The kidneys must also filter and purify
the blood, so when they are weak or out
of order and fall to do their work you
can understand how quickly your entire
body is affected, and how every organ
seems to fail to do its duty.
The cure for these troubles is Dr. Kil
mer’s Swamp-Root, the world-famous
kidney remedy. In taking it you afford
natural help to Nature, for Swamp-Root
is the most perfect healer and gentle aid
to the kidneys that is known to medical
science.
If there Is any doubt In your mind a*
to your condition take from your urine
on rising about four ounces, place it in a
glass or bottle and let It stand twenty
four hours. If on examination It is milky
or cloudy, if there Is a brick-dust settling,
or if small particles float about in it, your
kidneys are in need of immediate atten
tion.
Swamp-Root is pleasant to take and iB
used In the leading hospitals, recom
mended by physicians in their private
practice, and is taken by doctors them
selves who have kidney aliments, because
they recognize in it the greatest and
most successful remedy for kidney, liver
and bladder troubles.

great remedy, Swamp-Root, is what you
need, you can purchase the regular flfty
cent and one-dollar size bottles at the
