2 THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE. YVOHK OF THIS SESSION V* IT HIS PROURISSSKD THI S FAR. a'be Question of Improvement o the Old t'npliol by Making: Addi tion* op of Erecting: Separate Building >on Much Dl*cu*ed— The Matter of t‘ongreiHnl Ho- n l>l<orcion mont 1* Proving n Hard but to Oack—The Proponed Stnte Primary Law .Meeting: With Mooli Opposition—The Convict Agitation Ha* Subaided for the Present. Tallahassee, April 27.—Most of tho lime of the Legislature thus far hats been do voted to matters more particularly inter esting to individual members and to local communities. Very few of the more im portant matters of general interest have been considered. A Joint committee has begun to deliberate upon the subject of Improvement to the present capitol build ing. By some it is thought best to make OvldiUons to tho present building by put ting n wing on each end with ci large dome in the center. This will be quite expen sive and the amount spent for the dome will be useless as it cannot he put to any Use except to give light. Many ot the most conservative members express a preference for a separate build icg sufficient for the Supreme Court, the Library end the Kailroad Commission leaving the present building entirely to th? legislative and executive officers, who will then have ample room One great advantage the separate building offers is that it cun be constructed for less money, tend made more pleasing in appearance, and another is that in case of lire all state property will not be in one building, sub ject to loss by one tire. The advocates for a separate building are gaining ground and hope to succeed, The question of redistricting the state for three congressmen is receiving mild consideration. The portion of the state ■west of tho Suwannee river will be In one district, while the peninsular portion of the state will be divided. Some prefer a north and south line, so as to have all the south Gulf coast In one district and all the Atlantic coast in another district, while others contend for an east and west line drawn north of Marion county, so as to give all of the southern end of the peninsular to one congressman and the populous counties in Cast Florida to an other congressman. If this difference continues there may be no redistricting, leaving the election of a third congress man to the state at large. This latter Is desired by many politicians. A committee appointed by the last Dem ocratic State Convention has presented a state primary law and It has been intro duced In both houses, but it is being strongly opposed by active men. It Is considered impoltic in its provisions. The convict question Is not now being agitated, as the matter is considered a closed incident. There is no excitement on this subject now. The first bill to become a law this ses sion was one allowing graduates of the Deland Daw School to be admitted to the bar without examination. This was tho first bill signed by Gov. Jennings. SENIOR* MAY GET DIPLOMAS. Technological Trustee* Will Disen** the Matter Tuesday. Atlanta. April 27.—1 t is said students of the senior class at the Technological school may yet graduate in June, though the faculty has issued a mandate saying the boys could not be given their diplomas nnril next November. President N. 15. ■Harris of the Board of Trustees came up from Macon this morning to look after some matters pertaining to the school, and while here announced that the ques tion of giving the young men their di plomas in June would be discussed at the meeting of the trustees to be held on Tuesday. Several of the students have called on President Harris recently and requested that some attention' he given the matter. President Harris said the l>oys had stated to him that they had made up all their academic studies, hut had not been able to catch up in shop work. Pres ident Harris said tho matter would be taken up at the coming meeting and a definite decision reached. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE INSTITUTE. Mr*. Gddy’s Followers to Renew Ap plication for Charter. Atlanta, April 27.—Application for u charter for a Christian (Science Institute will be renewed in the Superior Court next week by Mrs. Livingston Mims, Ed ward H. Carman, William Goodwin and others. The eociety has employed Judgo Henry B. Tompkins to represent them In the application and they expect to secure the charter. The society recently applied for a charter in the Superior Court, but It was denied by Judge Lumpkin, who ruled that the state laws demanded a medical examination before the State Board of Pharmacy and a regular physi cian’s certificate from the board hefore healing oould be practiced In the state, neither of which the Christian Scientists had obtained. IN HER NINETY -FOURTH YEAR. Mr*. Smith Die*. Leaving; Over One Hnndred Descendant*. Atlanta, April 27.—Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, who would have been 94 years old had she lived until next Thursday, died at her granddaughter’s home, Mrs. A. T. Paden, at Rock Springs, four miles north of At lanta. She had been an Invalid for twenty year*, having had a fall from which she never recovered. Mrs. Smith was a most remarkable woman. At a family reunion held at the home of her daughter. Mrs. Mattie Paden, two years ago, there were present representative* of five generations. Besides Mrs. Smith, there was one child, twenty-four grandchildren, seventy-seven great-grandchildren, and seven great great-grande lilldren, making a total of 109 present. TRBASIRKII PARKS' HOXD.
