SPEED OF BESSIE WILKES.
The Fastest Pacer Ever on the
Thunderbolt Track.
Savannah, Ga., May 20.—Editor Morning
Seas: Noticing statement made in your
paper of the 19th Inst, signed, "One of the
Older Ones.” comparing the speed of Pal
metto Prince and Oakland Prince with
i at of "Bessie Wilkes,” unfavorably to
the latter, would say that your informant
n "dead wrong,” and evidently not well
posted. As he himself fears, his memory
does not serve him well, as what he
teither through ignorance, prejudice or
jealousy) states to be facts never took
place. To begin with, Palmetto Prince
never went a mile better than 2:20 over
the Thunderbolt track, and this was not
in a race, merely a trial, the same as Bes
sie Wilkes; then again Oakland Prince
never went a mile in better than 2:26 on
this same track.and this was not in a race
either. The mile paced by Bessie Wilkes
ja 2:17%, notwithstanding the assertion
of your correspondent, is the fastest mile
ever shown over the Thunderbolt track
by a harness horse.
Charles E. Stults.
The statements made by Mr. Stults are'
correct. I drove all three of these horses,
and I repeat that the mile I drove Bessie
Wilkes in 2:17% is the fastest mile ever
driven over the Thunderbolt (rack by me.
G. W. Haight.
Savannah, Ga., May 20.—Editor Morning
News: I would like to give "One of the
Older Ones” the facts concerning Palmet
to Prince and Oakland Prince: First Oak
land Prince never trotted the Thunder
bolt track better than 2:26. That was up
to a certain time the track record for
trotting. As to Palmetto Prince (and this
statement has been approved by Mr. Geo.
W. Haight, the driver of both horses) he
never paced in a race or trial a mile bet
ter than 2:20 over this track. The horse
to beat Oakland Prince's trotting record
"One of the Older Ones” seems to know
nothing about. This was Musquetoon who
at the time, was owned by Dr. A. G.
Bouton. He trotted the track in question
in 2:22(4, which record stands to-day.
There is not the slightest doubt about
Bessie Wilkes' position. She beat the
Thunderbolt track record by at least 2%
seconds.
As to the track being slow, what better
evidence is required than that Palmetto
Prince could not beat 2:20 over this track,
but took a record of 2:11 and a trial of
2:e5 on a mfle track shortly after leaving
Savannah, and Oakland Prince whose best
time was 2:26 took a record of 2:20% after
leaving Savannah. Musquetoon only a few
days since trotted the Macon, Ga., track
in 2:1-4%, while Todd Crook, who had a
record in a race of 2:10%, could not make
a mile as good as 2:20 over the Thunder
bolt track. Bessie Wilkes, who hns a
race record of 2:14% over a half mile
track, has never shown a mile faster
than 2:17% over the Thunderbolt track.
"An Up-to-Date One."
The Pennsylvania. Railroad's Twen
tieth fentnry- Poach,
In very few fields does the opening of
the twentieith century find greater ad
vancement than in that of railway equip
ment. Every safety that skill can
devise is applied to the practical opera
tion of the railroads, and the passengers
are surrounded by every convenience and
luxury.
The Pennsylvania Railroad was the first
railroad company in the country to pro
vide its patrons with the luxurious ac
commodations supplied by limited trains,
and keeping pace with these provisions
for tnose who cared to pay for exclusive
ness, the ordinary day coach has been
improved in proportion. Years ago the
standard coach of the Pennsylvania was
the model of the car-builders. The new
vestibuled coaches of to-day are as far
superior, in all that makes for comfort,
to those of a quarter of a century ago
as the splendid Pullirians of President
McKinley's transcontinental special are
to their predecessors of a like period.
The new standard coaches of the Penn
sylvania Railroad are the best examples
of American car building. In their de
sign and construction no expense has'
been spared. The cars are fifty-three feet
eight inches in length, and are fitted with
Wide vestibules. The platforms are strong
ly constructed, and the couplers are of
the most approved type.
l interior Is finished in quartered oak,
and the ornamentation is classed as Ro
manesque. The light-colored wood with
its handsomely finished surface lends a
brightness which is intensified by the
high pitch of the roof and the width of
'e upper deck. The headlining, a soft
shade of green, conforms well to the gen
eral scheme of color.
Saloons are Introduced at both ends of
the cars. In which there are the usual
toilet conveniences. These saloons are
partitioned from the body of the car by
Uikheads orTiamented with panels, heavy
green glass, and brass grilles. All the
brass work Is artistic, and the shades of
the deck tile, plush, and carpets har
monize with the general decorative ef
fect.
The seats areofa new pattern; their up
holstery is rich in material and color,
and the system of springs on which they
are built adds greatly to their comfort.-
"hr- windows are of ample dimensions,
and are provided with curtains of a red
"h-brown material, of a design espe
'mlly selected for these cars. The move
ment of the curtains is controlled by fix
tures which permit them to be raised to
anv desired hight. The windows, fitted
with special fixtures, are so carefully
alanced as to be raised by a simple
mechanism fixed to the sill!. When this
mechanism is pressed lightly with the
hger, tiie sash rises, and stops at any
desired by the passenger.
1 s tytem of lighting is compressed
ga I-rom five, to six handsome lamps in
troduced in the body of each car, and
°m in each vestibule, give an abundance
lf gbt, and render the car very at
tractive at night.
One Of the greatest of'modern Improve
pDts thru has been introduced is the
c'stem of heating and ventilation. The
* n lr ce of heat Is steam from the locomo
i'e. Steam is carried into each dar, pass
's through radiators, and the oondensa
returned to the tender of the loco
motive by means of a vacuum pump,
system permits of perfect regulation
temperature, and by easy manlpula
prevents the extremes that are so
u 1 "Ving to passengers. The Improvement
r ventilation consists In a radical change
■ m past practiee, which drew the cold
through ventilators located In the
,1! of the car and distributed it on the

AIMS OF A NEW SCHOOL.
Pinna Which Misses Tape and West
Have in View.
Savannah seems to be taking an unusual
interest in education just at present. Be
sides the enlarged facilities ior public
education and the new kindergartens
which the fall is to bring, anew private
school for girls will be opened by Miss
Pape and Miss West, which claims to
stand for some advanced ideas in educa
tion. The place of first importance in
the school will be assigned to moral train
ing differing from those who think that
the purpose of education is the acquisi
tion of knowledge, much less of facts,
and even from those who believe that It
should be the development of intellec
tual power, she principals of this school
hold that the true aim of education is the
formation of character, and that Intellec
tual education is most valuable when it
subserves this end. They c'iaim, too, that
this ultimate aim, if kept in view, affects
'the methods of teaching at every turn.
Next in importance is to be physical
training. Agreeing with that educator
who said that no school can attain to the
ideal standard unless it improves the pu
pils, physically as much as mentally, in
a year, the principals have provided a
physical training course, manual train
ing, a half hour recess, variety in work,
and change of position, have paid close
attention to the demands of hygiene in
seating, lighting, ventilation, etc., and
have carefully guarded against the evils
of cramming and overstudy.
In the domain of purely Intellectual ed
ucation. 'these things are chiefly empha
sized: First, advanced primary methods,
as phonics in reading and objective and
constructive work In number, and system
atic nature study. Second, the import
ance of English and English literature.
Believing that as soon as a child can
read he can and should read true litera
ture, the reading course has been made
one of literary value from the first.
A correlation of studies has been made
wherever pedagogic-ally correct, as in his
tory and geography, writing, drawing and
the development of natural sciences out
of nature study.
