A CRIPPLE’S HORRIBLE DEED.
Evidence In Killing
Rronithl Out lij Coroner'* Jury.
Tifton, Ga., June 3.—A singular state
Of affairs developed at the coroner's in
quest over Luke Faulkner, shot and killed
yesterday morning by John H. Sweat, at
Faulkner's home, four miles east of Nash
ville, the county site of Berrion county.
Evidence is that Sweat drove up to
Faukner's gate, called him out, and paid
him So that he owed him. There had been
some feeling between the men for some
time, and %s Kaulkner turned to enter
Ibis gate. Sweat emptied the contents of
a double-barrel shotgun in his hack.
Faulkner fell backwards in a pool of
water, and Sweat's dogs covered him as
if he had beer, an animal, biting and
gnawing him during his dying agonies
Sweat handed his gun to his boy stand
ing by and told him to shoot Faulkner's
housekeeper, who was at the cowpen
near iby, and who had been a witness to
the killing. The woman ran for her life.
nd the 'boy fired at her and pursued her
with the dogs until she took refuge In
a swamp near by.
Sweat then drove to a neighbors and
returned the gun, which he had borrow
ed, and then went to Nashville, where he
surrendered to the sheriff.
The coroner’s jury returned a verdict
Of wilful murder.
Sweat is a county pauper and a help-
Jees cripple. Since early youtiifbls body
and lower limbs have been stiffened by
rheumatism, until he can move neither
body, leg. foot or head, only using his
arms and being able to turn his eyes.
He travels over the country in an ox-cart,
on which he reclines at full length in a
chair made to fit bis body. Despite his
condition, be has a family of seven or
eight children, and is said to be a man
of violent temper. He has to be lifted into
his cart and out of it. For fifteen or
twenty years he has drawn a pension of
J 5 per month from the county pauper
fund. *
Faulkner was a widower with several
grown children. Public sentiment is very
strong against Sw'et, who claims, how
ever. that Faulkner was attacking him
with a knife when he shot to save him
self. Sweat is in jail awaiting action of
Berrien Superior Court.

GETTING TOO MUCH HAIK.
Bnt Crops Around Oral* Are in Pret
ty Fair .Shape.
Ocala, Fla., June 3.—The drouth of
April and May has been succeeded by a
series of rains that are beginning to be
too much of a good thing. Oats were
ready to cut, and in some instances were
cut and stacked in the fields when the
deluge descended. The rain and hall of
Saturday night beat down com and upset
fences all over the county. The cotton
acreage is more than twice what It was
last year and the young stalks are look
ing well. The prospect for corn is good.
With propitious weather, the yield will
be immense. The watermelon crop, will,
the weather permitting, be the best for
years. The melons are not as forward as
usual, but the acreage is large and the
vines heavily fruited. Beans and Irish
potatoes did well, though not as well as
usual. Of cucumbers, squashes and oth
er garden truck, there is enough, and not
too much. Velvet beans are not In as
high favor as in former years, and the
crop will be comparatively small.
FIVE HEED FOR MURDER.
Negroes Charged With Killing Un
known White Man In Clinch Connlj.
HomerviHe, Ga., June 4.—The five ne
groes arrested some days ago changed
with the murder of a white man, about
45 years old, and unknown in this county,
were given a preliminary trial before Jus
tice R. M. Crum here Saturday. While
the evidence was meager it was sufficient
to warrant him in binding them over to
await action of the grand Jury.
The crime wtlh which they are charged
is one of the most heinous ever commit
ted in the county, and the entire com
munity. as well as adjoining counties, are
very much wrought up about it. If the
proof was positive it Is very probable
the guilty parties would be summarily
dealt with.
STORM IT SCREVEN.
Farm* Damaged liy Heavy Rnin and
Wind.
Sylvanla, Ga., June 4.—A disastrous
rain and wind storm visited this section
yesterday about noon, and did consider
able damage to crops, trees, fences, etc.
It was the heaviest rain ever seen In this
part of the country. All the fields are
badly washed, and in some places it will
be more than a week before farmers can
get into their fields to plow, on account
of the water, A number of shade trees
were blown down around Sylvania. About
two miles from town, Mr. J. P. Stewart
had his dining rom and kitohen demol
ished, and a mule belonging to Mr. James
Gross was killed by a falling tree.
Mr. Nicholas Odum, one of the most
substantial citisens of this county, died
yesterday at his home, near Mobley Pond,
after an illness of several weeks of
typhoid pneumonia.
TUB SITUATION AT AMERICA'S.

forty strikers are still out and evince no
Inclination to surrender. The consign
ment of foreigners sent from Baltimore
to take tho strikers’ places are still
housed at the shops by the railroad com
pany and are doing small jobs. The re
maining boiler-makers have joined the
strikers. The round house is full of dis
abled locomotives awaiting repars.
