Ufllnger Will Get *5 lor Each Ac
casation Drawn.
Valdosta, Ga., Sept. 7.—An interest
ing case in law was decided by Judge
Hansel! at Thomasville yesterday. Ihe
case was a mandamus proceeding
brought by the former solicitor of the
County Court of Berrien, Col. XI. E.
Lastlnger, against the judge of that
court, Col. H. B. Peeples, to recover
costs alleged to be due the solicitor in
a number of cases.
The solicitor claimed that he should
get a fee of $5 on each criminal accu
sation drawn by him, but the judge
held differently. There were 166 cases
of this kind during the two years that
Solicitor Lastinger served, so the case
Involved SB3O. After hearing all of the
arguments in the case, Judge Hansell
deeided that the solicitor was cleatly
entitled to the sum and an order was
issued directing the County Commis

The river is unusually high for this
time of year.

Tate, Ga., Sept. T.—There has been
o.ulte a sensation caused in Tate by a
mob of white men who.recently whip

whose houses were searched for the

Some of the negroes began to talk
about what they were going to do for
these men, and on account of this there
have been notices put up at both mar

leave the place in three days. They
are fast leaving, and only a few fam

Heavy Sentence for Pullen.
Dublin, Ga.. Sept. 7.—Yesterday, con
trary to the expectations of everybody
and much surprise to the officers of the
court, A- A. Pullen, who on Tuesday
was convicted of the illegal sale of
whisky, but who disappeared before
sentence could be passed upon him.
gave himself up to City Court Sheriff
John D. Prince.
At noon Judge John S. Adams pro
ceeded to pass sentence upon him. Be
fore this was done a petition was pre
sented from a number of the citizens
of Brewton. asking that leniency be
shown. The Baptist minister of Brew
ton. the prisoner’s attorney and several
friends, asked the court to be as light i
on him as possible. Judge Adams
thought that a heavy sentence was
necessary and fined Pullen JSOO and
costs or twelve months an the county
chaingang. Pullen could not pay the
fine and Is now in jail. His case will
not be appealed to the Supreme Court,
but if possible his friends will pay him 1
out. It is rumored that an effort will j
be made to get the fine reduced. There I
are five other cases against Pullen,
which will probably never be tried if
Pullen from this time on lives a cor
rect life Pullen has a wife and sev
eral children.
