C.LA.’STHEWINMERS
REPEATED THE OGLETHORPE
BALL TEAM IS TO O.
PITCHERS HAD AN OFF DAY.
NEITHER SCHLEY XOR ELTON HAD
CONTROL OF THE BALL.
gchley ReUred in Fourth Inning
and Succeeded by Bntler—Elton
Pitched Entire Game for Hi* Side.
Much Fine Stick Work, But Poor
Fielding Al*o Renponnible for
Muy of the Rnnn— Hobdy and Bnt
• ler Each Made a Two-Bagger and
a Three-Bagger—Excellent Work
Done by Both Catcher*.
The C. L. A.'s ball team defeated that
of the Oglethorpe Light Infantry yes
terday afternoon by the score of 12 to
8, m a game that was remarkable for
but little brilliant playing and much
that was bad, and for its dullness and
dreary length, nearly two hours.
Both pitchers, Schley and Elton, had
an oft day; Schley was knocked out of
the box before the end of the fourth
inning, and was succeeded by Butler,
while Elton was very wild, gave six
bases on balls, struck the batters of
ten, and allowed more hits than have
been secured off him in any of his pre
vious games. Despite his wildness,
however, he struck out more men than
Schley and Butler together, and with
even fair support would have kept the
hits so scattered as to prevent many
of the runs that were scored.
As It was, the C. L. A.'s
got men on bases both
on hits and on fumbles by the Ogle
thorpe's infield, and these men scored
on hits at critical times. Add to this
the fact that the batting of the C. L.
A.’s was exceptionally good and the
story'of game is told.
In the first inning the Ogiethorpes
scored three runs, and things looked
as though they were coming their way.
Hobdy, the first man up, wras out from
third to first: Schreck hit safe past
short; Stark hit to pitcher, who threw
to second, and Stark was safe at first,
while Schreck got to third. Wilkerson
hit safe to left and Schreck scored;
Mcßride put a hit in the same place
and Stark scored; Clarke hit to short,
who threw’ Mcßride out at second, but
Wilkerson scored; McAvoy put a fly
safely out of the reach of short, but the
side was retired when Biley struck
out.
The C. L. A.'s were not slow either
to get in the game of run
gettlng Butler got to first
on balls, stole second and third,
and scored on J. Mclntire's hit to right.
Wiggins hit safe between first and sec
and and Mclntire romped home. J.
Downey struck out; Charlton waa out
at first, and "Wiggins was caught at
the plate.
In the next inning Elton went to first
on balls, Hobdy was out on a fly to
left, and Schreck out on a fly to short
w’ho threw to third making a double
play. The C. L. A’s in their turn added
two more runs to their score. F. Mc
lntire hit safe to center, W. Downey
struck out; Barrett struck out; Schley
hit to second who fumbled the ball so
that the runner was safe at first and
Mclntire scored, and Butler hit safe
for three bases to right and Schley
scored. J. Mclntire got to first on bails,
but the side was retired by Wiggins
striking out.
Neither side scored in the third in
ning, but In the following one the Og
iethorpes braced themselves and got in
two more runs. McAvoy got to first
on ball*, Riley did the same as also
did Elton; Hobdy hit safe to center for
two bases and McAvoy and Riley scor
ed. Then Schley retired and Butler
went Into the box. Schreck was out
on a f.v to pitcher. Stark struck out,
and Wilkerson was out on a fly to
short
It was in the latter part of this in
ning that the Ogiethorpes lost heart
and the game. Barrett Btruck out;
Schley hit safe to center, and scored on
Butler's hit to left; J. Mclntire got to
first on balls; Wiggins hit to the pitch
er and was safe on a fumbled ball,
while Butler scored; J. Downey hit to
left and Mclntire and Wiggins scored,
while Downey followed them across the
plate on Chariton’s hit to left. W.
Downey hit safe past short and center,
and Charlton scored, but the side was
retired by Downey’s trying to steal
third.
In the following inning neither side
scored; in the sixth the Ogiethorpes
scored one and in the eighth inning the
C. L. A.'s scored two, making the final
score. The features of the game were
the all round good playing of Butler,
Hobdy and Wiggins, and the excellent
work of both catchers. The following
