MERRITT MAY OPPOSE GLENN.
Yaldonta Mnn to Be In Race for
State School Conimiaaiourr.
Valdosta, Ga.. Dec. 14.—Prof. W. B.
Merritt has returned from a trip to
Atlanta, and if his friends are to be
relied upon, he is to be an important
personage in the political campaign of
next year. It is understood here that
the opponents of State School Com
missioner Glenn have centered upon
prof. Merritt to make the race against
him. Several months ago Prof. Mer
ritt was approached upon the subject
and since then a great deal of pressure
has been brought to bear upon him. -
The opposition to Prof. Glenn seems to .
be widespread and Prof. Merritt has
received promises of support from
some of the strongest men in the
state, both in political and educational
circles. He has made no public an- j
nouncement as yet. but it is known
that he has discussed the matter with
the Board of Education here, and it is
generally understood that he will be in
the race. A
This afternoon Policeman Bud Dam
pier arrested a negro named Lonnie
Fields, who burglarized the railroad
shanties at Ousley station yesterday
afternoon. The officer recovered most of
the stolen goods, Fields having them
In a bag with him at the time.
The attorney foi Charles Ellis, who ;
was convicted of murder at the recent
term of the Superior Court and sen
tenced to life imprisonment, made a
motion for anew trial at the time, but
they announce now that the motion
has been withdrawn, and Ellis Will go
on and serve out his time.

Rev. C. L. B. Davis, who resigned
his work as pastor of the Wesleyan
Methodist Church here at the last an
nual conference, has accepted a posi
tion -with B. O. Middleton A Son at
Atkinson. He will preach also at At
kinson and at Hortense. Anew church
Is to he built at Atkinson during the
next year.

Yoons White Man Killed by Negro
Who Would Not Sell Him Whis
ky.
Jackson. Ga., Dec. 14.-—This morning
about S o’oloek about two miles from
Jackson, a young white man, named
Will McDaniel, was killed by Will Bes
ley, colored.
From reports received from the scene
of the crime, young McDaniel went to
the house of the Bosley negro and
wanted to purchase whisky from him.
Beeley replied he had none to sell, and
McDaniel, from reports received, cursed
Beal-v and the negro becoming furious
at McDaniel’s conduct, secured his
shot-gun and opened Are on McDaniel
and the young man fell dead. Sheriff
Crawford arrested Besley and placed
him in the county jail.

F. H. Bruch Sell* Tallahassee
Boutheaatarn to Above Named
Company.
Tallahassee, Fla., Dec. H.—lt was
given out here to-day that F. H.
Beach had sold the Tallahassee South
eastern Railroad to the Florida Grand
Trunk Railway Company. This com
pany was granted a charter by the
Florida Legislature In 1898, with a cap
ital of 1500,000. and the following In
corporators: J. S. Tyren and H. T.
Baya of Florida; H. McCall of New
York, R. Combes of Alabama and Sam
uel H. Levy of London, Kngland, to
build, equip and operate a railroad
from some point on the Atlantic ocean
through Tallahasse to some point on
the boundary line between Alabama
and Florida, and granting 10,000 acres
of land per mile.
It Is stated that the parties Inter
ested are daily expected here to per
fect the papers. It is also claimed
that the Grand Trunk people will
push the work of building their rail
road.

Helen Wi'liimns Post Indicted at
Jacksonville.
Jacksonville, Fla., Dec. 14.—Tho
grand Jury In the United States Court
has returned a true bill in the case
against Helen Post, alias Helen Wil
mans, of Seabreese, Fla. The indict
ment charges that the defendant vio
lated Section 5480 of the Revised Stat
utes by devising schemes and artifices
to defraud persons under false and
fraudulent pretenses on her part, by
representing that she possessed the
power of mental science of mind
cure to cure all forms of diseases and
weakness, for which she received
money that was converted to her own
use. The ease promises to become
celebrated, as the mental scientists, at
their recent annual convention, voted
to participate In the defense of the
accused woman and her associates.
Mrs. Post was arrested In August
last, and has been under $5,000 ball.
Her husband. Col. C. C. Post, end her
son-in-law, S. F. Burgman, were in
dicted in Macon, Ga., last month.
ASHORE ON AMELIA ISLAND.
Italian Burk Abandoned by Crew

Fernandlna. Fla., Dec. 14.—The Ital
ian bark Providensa, R. Quierola.
master, went ashore to-day on Ame
lia Island, about due east from the
Amelia light. The vessel is now In a
very dangerous position and unless the
wcslher changes at once she will go
to pieces. She is pounding now con
siderably. The crew has already aban
doned the vessel and reached this city
this afternoon.
An effort will be made to send a
wrecking crew to the vessel at once.
The storm signals are up and a se
rvers southeast gale for the South At
lantic la predicted.

Death of Mr. Ben Osteen—Politics
Somewhat Mixed.
Homervllle, Ga., Dec. 14.—Mr. Ben
Osteen was burled at Arabie Ceme
tery yesterday. In the death of Mr.
Osteen - Clinch county looses one of
her best and oldest citizens. He leaves
a host of friends and relatives. Among
his children is Col. Levi Osteen of
Douglass.
A little bov of Mr. X. L. Binders
was severely gored In the side a few
days ago by a pet cow supposed to
be harmless.
Mr. John T. Dame returned Thurs
day with his charming bride from
Charleston and other points of inter
est he visited on his bridal tour.
It is impossible now for any one to
say what candidate for Governor is in
the lead here, as they are all regarded
as able men and public opinion is
pretty well divided, especially between
Col. Estill and Mr. Guerry.

Jetties at Mayport.
Mayport, Fla., Dec. 14.—Losing her
bearings In the thick weather and
caught in the grip of a heavy sea. the
schooner James Judge, Capt. David
son, bound from Magayuez, Porto
Rico, to Jacksonville, without cargo,
ran against the Jetties at the entrance
to the harbor before daylight this
morning. The schooner was rescued
by two tugs and carried up the river.
Her planking was badly damaged, but
her hull was not stove in. She is
owned in Philadelphia. She will im
mediately go on the ways in Jackson
ville for repairs, the full extent of
which cannot yet be estimated.
NEGRO GIRL KILLED BY BOY.

After Quarreling.
Louisville, Ga., Dec. 14.—0n Mr. An
drew Oat’s plantation in the edge of
Burke county, Julia Jenkins, a negro
girl 17 years old, was killed yesterday
afternoon by Will Paterson, a negro
boy about the same age, while they
were returning from the cotton field.
They became engaged in a quarrel
when the Paterson negro raised an ax
handed him by Will Spires, another
negro, and spilt the girl’s head open.
Both Spires and Paterson have been
bound over to the Superior Court.
Old Massey Dies at Cairo.
Cairo, Ga., Dec. 14.—Mr. Gld Massey
died at 12:30 p. m. to-day after an Ill
ness of two weeks of pneumonia. Mr.
Massey was the only barber of the
town and a good one. Mr. Massey will
be missed here very much. He leaves
a young wife and a three-week's-old
baby.
