FROEBEL HOME’S FIRST WEEK
TbhKt-Iwo Children Returned and
Others Go Down To-morrow.
The twenty-two children who went
to the Fresh Air Home, Tybee, Mon
day, returned to Savannah yesterday,
and to-morrow a second lot will be
taken to the home by two of the ladies
of Froebel Circle of King's Daughters,
under whose auspices the home is con
ducted. The home has but recently
been completely repaired, anew roof
put on, coats of paint put both on the
inside and the out, and in every way it
has been put in first-class condition.
Children who go to the home are
taken down by two members of the
circle, and two ladies likewise accom
pany them back to the city when the
week is up. The children are usually
met at the depot by their mothers.
Those who accept the hospitality of the
home may remain there a week, two
weeks, or longer as may be considered
necessary by the doctor who sends
them to the home.
The home is entirely undenomina
tional and any child is taken there who
is run down, sick, or needs a change.
With very young children such as
teething babies, mothers are allowed
to go. All that is necessary to get a
child to the home is for application to
be made to Miss Lily Hunter, No. 718
Drayton street, a doctor's certificate
being taken along showing that the
child has no contagious disease.
The ladies interested in the work are
desirous that all, persons, especially
doctors, will send to Miss Hunter such
children as they know are in peed of
a stay at the home. There is no trou
ble in getting applications for a stay
at the island, but the members of the
circle are anxious that those that are
especially in need of a stay at the isl
and shall be the first to get it.
A trained nurse is at the home and
a sick child, even if it has to be car
ried on a cot, will be received into the
home. While most of the children that
are taken in the home go on Mondays,
if a doctor thinks any child needs to
go at once it will be sent immedi
ately.
The home is very conveniently ar
ranged, the main building, besides din
ing room and sitting room, has two
large dormitories, with dressing rooms
attached. Here most of the children
sleep. In addition there are two two
room cottages, one of which is called
the hospital and in which the very
sick children stay, away from the
noise of the main building, and here,
also, the trained nurse lives. The sec
ond cottage is kept for mothers and
their little children.
Last summer over 25j) children en
joyed the benefits of the home. Visit
ors to the home, especially doctors, are
most welcome, for the ladies of the
home want the public to become ac
quainted with the work that is being
done. Owing to the expense of the re
cent repairs and the increased price of
comestibles, the expenses of the home
are considerable, and donations will be
thankfully received.
DON’T BELIEVE CONFESSION.
Detectives and Others Take Little
stock In Blnekls Story.
The city detectives and officers in
the police department do not believe
that Jim Black, the negro who was
lynched near Ravenel, S. C., for the
murder of Mrs. Jones, told the truth
when he confessed to Patrolman Jerni
gan that he killed Mrs. Levi, Michael
Schrenk, Jake Carter and a railroad
conductor In the Ogeechee district.
While no clues are in possession of
the officers to show by whom the
crimes were committed, and while they
do not think it likely that Jhe guilty
persons will ever be brought to justice,
the confession of Black would npt stop
an investigation in the event that the
officers secured any Information that
might throw some light on the crimes.
Jernigan says he believes every word
that he repeated to persons in Savan
nah after it was learned that Black
had been lynched.
While at one time he was absolute
ly certain that relatives of Schrenk
had eommltte4 the Whiskey Hill crime,
and caused their arrest, he says now
that he was mistaken and that Is sat
isfied Black and Sam Smith, who was
also shot to death near Ravenek were
the guilty men. Jernigan says that
the reason he did not return to Sa
vannah with Black when the confes
sion was made was because he had
almost reached his destination. The
reward paid for the arrest of Black by
the South Carolina authorities was
$lO2, while SI,OOO reward was offered
for the conviction of the murderers of
Schrenck and Carter. "
COL. ESTILL’S CAMPAIGN.
Atlanta Constitution: The showing
made by Hon. John H. Estill in the
gubernatorial race is one of the re
markable incidents of the contest. Col.
Estill entered the race only after there
had been much discussion and uncer
tainty as to what man from South
Georgia should enter for the guberna
torial nomination. When others were
finally eliminated he made declaration
of his candidacy and began a campaign
that puzzled the old-time political
managers. Without noise of bands or
any of the usual campaign devices he
began to visit the counties of the state
in person. He went around familiarly,
met men and shook their hands cor
dially, remarked that the state would
have much to gain by making a busi
ness man her Governor and that he
w-as himself that sort of man. His
good humor and straightforwardness
gained him strong followers everywhere
and the result of the balloting on
Thursday shows that his still hunt
brodgh* l him a very respectable bag of
game. It had gone for granted that
the main fight was between Messrs.
Terrell and Guerry, and that Col. Estill
could only hope to be a cloj>e-up tail
ender. But as the campaign drew to
the finish wife some shrew'd guessers
saw the spurs go ihto the flank of the
Savannahian’s mount and saw a larger
dust where he-was running. But the
great majority of on-lookers were fair
ly taken by surprise to find him ahead
of Mr. Guerry at the end of the home
stretch. It was a remarkably clever
and in many senses a successful cam
paign that Col. Estill made. Col. Es
till and his friends have reason to be
proud of his race.
Darien Gazette: Whether elected or
- defeated Col. J. H. Estill will be heard
from in the future. By his splendid
and manly course in the late campaign
he has built up a strong following In
this state.
Valdosta Times. The part of Mr.
Guerry’s speeches which were not de
voted to insinuations against Joe Ter
rell were filled with ridicule of Col.
Estill’s "innocence.” but the Colonel
w’as not as “innocent” as Guerry
thought.
Atlanta Journal: Col. J. H. Estill,who
comes second in the race for the gov
ernorship. made a remarkable cam
paign. He was known to the people as
one who had achieved signal success
in the management of his own affairs,
end they regarded him as well qualified
to conduct the state administration. He
knows nothing of professional politics
but is a high type of the business man
He appeared only two or three times
on the hustings, and then addreased
ni* hearers with calmness and good
sense which were truly admirable
ROAD FOR EMMET PARK.
I'rovixion May Be Made for an Ave
nue of Approach.
Chairman P. D. Daffin of the Park
and Tree Commission has not yet had
the application of the Standard Oil
Company. for permission to drive
teams across Emmet Park, !* reported
in the Morning Newa yesterday, re
ferred to him. The company wants
Kehoe's Iron Works to be allowed the
privilege of delivering repair material
in order to put a bridge across Fac
tors’ Walk in proper condition. It dees
not yield the point that It has the right
to approach its property across the
park, but made formal application
through courtesy to the recorder, who
has decided that Emmet Park could
not be driven over by teams.
Mr. Baffin said yesterday that he be
lieves that property owners have the
right to approach their property on the
north side of the Strand. He has not
given the application of the Standard
Oil Company particular consideration
as yet, however.
It now seems probable to Mr. Daffin
that the plan drawn about two years
ago for the establishment of a roadway
through Emmet Park, entering at
about Lincoln and emerging at about
Price street, will be carried out. No
great cost would be represened in the
improvement, and about the only ques
tion seems to be whether or not the
law will permit the establishment of
such a roadway.
