Atlanta, June 7.—The corrected of
ficial returns from Thursday's pri
mary make the result of the election
for Governor as follows:
Terrell, 79 counties, with 196 votes;
Estill. 35 counties, with 86 votes, and
Guerry, 23 counties, with 68 votes. Gor
commissioner of agriculture, O. B.
Stevens has 340 votes in the conven
tion, having lost only three counties
in the state—Bibb, Early and Chatta
hoochee. The usual statements have
been forthcoming to-day, Chairman
[Tapp stating that he believed Guerry's
fight has accomplished much good for
the state, even if he was defeated.
State School Commissioner Glenn says
he lost many counties which he should
have carried, considering the state
ments he had from friends with re
gard to the organization they had per
fected.

ing Banquet.
Atlanta, June 7.—At the banquet
given by the graduating class of the
Boys' High School last night, H. N.
BoStram, one of the graduates, in the
course of a speech, made the state
ment that the school was a “reg
ular hogwallow of politics." Supt. W.
M. Slaton, who was present by invita
tion, arose and denied the statement.
Bostram repeated it, and said that
the whole class would support him in
the statement. Thereupon the class
applauded. Toasts were then drunk to
every member of the faculty, except
Supt. Slaton, and the latter left the
banquet hall without saying anything
to any one. The incident has caused
considerable talk. The boys are criti
cised for attacking their principal
while he was their guest.
WAYCROSS HAS A BLAZE.
Residence of C. E. Murphy Burned
in Absence of Family.
Waycross, Ga., June 7.—The resi
dence of C. E. Murphy on Gulf street
burned at 10 o’clock to-night. Mr.
Murphy and family were absent on St.
Simons Island. There was no one on
the premises when the fire occurred.
The house was probably worth 33,000
and the furniture $2,000, part of which
was saved. The building and furni
ture was insured, but the amount can
not be learned to-night. Some be
lieve the house was first robbed and
then set on fire, as an electric light
in an upstairs room was burning in
the early part of the night, while the
house was dark later on.

Damage Done in Factory Section
and Little Girl Narrowly Escapes
Drowning.
Athens, Ga.. June 7.—Athens was
visited by quite a severe storm to-day.
The roof of the Athens Manufacturing
Company's plant was blown off and
the rain damaged the contents of the
building somewhat. The roof of sev
eral residences in that section were
blown off and several trees blown
down.
Ada Carlton, the 11-year-old daugh
ter of W. T. CarTton. came near being
drowned in a small branch near the
check factory which was swollen until
It was ten feet deep. Her father suc
ceeded in rescuing her after quite an
effort.

Atlanta, June 7.—President Lyman
Hall of the Technological School to
day received a letter from- President
Samuel Spencer of the Southern Rail
way, stating that *e would gladly
contribute SI,OOO to the fund of SIO,OOO
now beeing raised in order to secure a
like fund fr*m the General Educa
tional Board. President Hal! had
asked a contribution from the South
ern. but this was declined on the
ground of policy, though Mr. Spencer
did not hesitate to make a personal
contribution. This makes a total of
$6,000 that has been raised.
Lightning's Bolt Was Fatal.
Atlanta. June 7.—A dispatch from
Lithonia, in DeKalb county, says Mrs.
George W. Guinn, living near there,
was struck and instantly killed by a
bolt of lightning, at neon to-day.

Boston Cycle Races Postponed.
Bffston, June 7.—The motor-paced
race between Walthour and Champion
and all the other races scheduled for
to-night were postponed until Monday
evening on account of wet track.

Negro Jumped Oil Train, Rnt Got
Only Bruises for His Tronlile.
Wrightsville, Ga., June 7.—Sheriff
Linder left here yesterday with Loney
King a negro who had been sentenced
to a term of twelve months in the
chaingang, for Bainbridge, to turn hint
over to the authorities The sheriff
had the negro handcuffed. When they
had gotten about fifteen miles away
the negro leaped from the train win
now and made a break for liberty.
The train was running at a rate of
forty-two miles an hour. The train
was stopped as quickly as possible and
tun back. The negro was making ef
forts to get away but he was hurt too
badly to run. No bones were broken.
He was brought back to Wrightsville,
placed in jail and given medical atten
tion. He was badly bruised but is do
ing very well. Two or three times be
fore this he had made unsuccessful at
temps to get away.
Prof, and Mrs. C. M. Woodward
leave. to-day for Oxford to be present
at the commencement exercises there.
Prof. Woodward is a graduate of that
college.
Capt. J. L. Martin and Dr J. D.
Tyson have been selected as delegates
to represent Johnson county in the
State nominating convention. They go
instructed for Col. J. H. Estill.
The Democratic executive committee
meet here on June 28 for the purpose
of fixing the time and manner In which
candidates for county officers and
representative are be nominated.
The people generally favor a white
primary and it is though that is what
they will order.

General Meeting of Stork holders.
Notice is hereby given that a special
meeting of the stockholders of the At
lantic Coast Line Railroad Company
will be held at the company's office in
the city of Richmond. Virginia, at 11
o'clock, a. m., on Monday, the sixteenth
day of June, 1902, for the purpose of
considering, authorizing and voting on
the proposition to issue bonds of the
company to an amount not to exceed
twenty thousand dollars per mile of
railway actually owned, and not to ex
ceed in the aggregate eighty millions of
dollars ($80,000,000), payable in gold
coin not more than fifty years from
their date and bearing interest at a
rate not exceeding four per cent, per
annum, which bonds will Include the
amount necessary to retire all bonds
now outstanding and secured by under
lying mortgages, and also the amount
necessary for the acquirement of addi
tional properties and will, when all the
bonds are ultimately issued. Increase
the present bonded indebtedness of the
consolidated company about thirty
three million dollars, and fdr the pur2
pose of considering, authorizing and
providing for the execution and issue
of a mortgage or deed of trust to secure
said bonds embracing all of the rail
ways, property and franchises of the
company and for the purpose of con
sidering and acting upon such other
matters as may be legally presented
at the meeting. ,
