“THE HOUND OF
THE BASKERVILLES.”
A. CONAN DOYLE’S GREAT STORY.
The Savannah Morning News having
secured the right from McClure, Phil
lips & Cos., the publishers of the book,
■will publish this story as a serial, be
ginning July 6. The story -will be in
twelve installments and will appear
in the Sunday issue. It is Dr. Doyle's
greatest story. It rises to the hight of
genius.
As it is an adventure of Sherlock
Holmes, of course it is a detective
story. The plot, in one particular at
least, resembles that of Poe's “Mur
ders in the Rue Morgue,” but with the
important difference that the action in
one was the result of accident, in the
other of design. So perfect is the con
struction that even when the reader
arrives at the end, it is difficult to look
back and find any element or incident
that is unnecessary or misapplied. It
has been pointed out that ability to
construct a puzzle does not necessarily
Intply ability to solve one that another
has constructed. Poe proved that he
had both gifts when he analyzed the
mystery of Mary Rogers and • arrived
at a solution that was undoubtedly
correct.
The opening account of the curse of
the Baskervilles; the horrible story of
the end of Sir Charles, who was
stricken dead by heart disease when
he was pursued down the path in
front of his own house by the aveng
ing hound; the escaped convict} the
ponies plunging to death in the slime
of the moor; the chase after the sus
pected butler down the corridor of
Baskerville Hall—these and many oth
er episodes are told with all Dr. Doyle’s
usual skill.
The final clearing of the murder mys
tery is thrilling. But after all, the Im
portant thing is that the reader should
be kept in the dark as long as possible.
This is done admirably. Like Sherlock
Holmes assistant Watson, you suspect
everybody but the right person until
toward the close. So there is no ante
climax..
At the same time the last chapter,
in which Holmes goes over the whole
case and sums up as if he were ad
dressing a jury, is neither necessary
nor artistic. When the curtain is down
at the play it is better to go to sup
per and then to bed, and not have the
leading man take you behind the
scenes. Why Mr. Holmes came to this,
that, or the other conclusion is hardly
worth knowing—after it is all over. On

the other hand it is amusing to lis
ten to him telling why a thing is so
while he is on the trail.
Holmes is at his best in a scene like
the following. He had suddenly no
ticed a portrait on the dining-room
wall of Baskerville Hall. He learned
that it was the original villain of the
family.
Holmes 3aid little more, but the pic
ture of the old roysterer seemed to
have a fascination for him, and his
eyes were continually fixed on it dur
ing supper. It was not until later,
when Sir Henry had gone to
his room .that I was able to follow the
trend of his thoughts. He led me back
into the banqueting hall, his bedroom
candle in his hand, and he held it
against the time-stained portrait on
the wall.
“Do you see anything there?"
“I looked at the broad plumed hat,
the curling love-locks, the white lace
collar, and the straight face that w r as
framed between them. It was not a
brutal countenance, but it was prim,
hard and stern, with a firm-set, thin
lipped mouth, and a coldly intolerant
eye.
“ ‘ls it like anyone you know'?’
“ ‘There is something of Sir Henry
about the jaw.’
“ ‘Just a suggestion, perhaps. But
wait an instant.’ He stood upon a
chair, and holding the light in his left
hand he curved his right arm over the
broad hat and round the long ringlets.
“ 'Good Heavens!’ I cried in amaze
ment.
“The face of Stapleton had sprung
out of the canvass.
“ ‘Ha! You see it now. My eyes
have been trained to examine faces and
not, (heir trimmings. It is the first
quality of a criminal investigator that
he should see through a disguise.’
“ 'But this is marvelous. It might
be his portrait?’
“ ’Yes, it is an interesting instance of
a throw back, which appears to be
both physical and spiritual. A study
of family portraits is enough to con
vert a man to the doctrine of reincar
nation. The fellow is a Baskerville—
that is evident.’
“ ‘With designs upon the succes
sion.’
“ ‘Exactly. This chance of the pic
ture has supplied us with one of our
most obvious missing links. We have
him, Watson, we have him.’ ”
Those who have never met Mr. Sher
lock Holmes before will be driven to
read of his other adventures by this
book. Those to whom his deeds are
familiar will have their respect for
him deepened.”
