STORY OF PLACIDO.
Funeton Tell* of Mir 'lnn Sentenced
For Murder.
Denver, Col., .Tan. 1. —Manila dis
patches received here state that Hilary
Placido, a Filipino, who aided Hen.
Funston in the capture of Aguinaldo,
fias been sentenced to life imprison
ment for murder.
Details of the crime are lacking, but
Gen. Funston and other army officers
here who knew the scout believe that
}he crime was committed since thev
left the archipelago, as it does not
seem probable that Placido could have
been called to account for something
done during the time he was engaged
as an active participant in the revolu
tion.
In speaking of Placido Gen. Funston
said:
“He was never my spy, and the only
money he ever Vecelved front the Unit
ed States was for the part he took in
the capture of Aguinaldo. He fought
against the Spaniards anil then took up
arms against the United States. 11l 1599
he was severely wounded, being shot,
through the lung. He recovered and
again took an active part In the war.
The following year he surrendered a*
the same time that Gen. Garcia did,
He was a prisoner for about three
months and then I released him. He
took the oath of allegiance and often
times of his own volition gave me in
formation regarding the enemy. He
was not a spy in the sense of the word
that he was in the government's em
ploy, nor did he ever go into their lines
for Information for our use.
“When I arranged the plan for the
capture of Agunaldo 1 took Placido
along. He did not know the object of
the expedition Intil we were well un
der way. I then explained my plan
to him, and he agreed to help me. In
order to carry out the scheme, he be
came the nominal commander of he
expedition, as it was necessary to make
the natives bell ve the we Americans
were prisoners. When we reached ihe
camp of Aguinaldo, Placido rushed In
and threw his former chief on the
floor of the hut and held him there
until we made him a prisoner. For Ms
part in this work he was paid by the
government.”
THE MICK WOOD BANK CASE.
Judge Purtly File. llorm- In the
Mutter nt Heunfort.
Beaufort, S. C., Jan. X.—Circuit
Judge R. O. Purdy has just tiled his
decree in the Lockwood bank case,
was argued before hitn here at
the September term of the Court of
Common Picas. He decides that the
funds deposited by the county and
town treasurers in the unincorporated
bank of Lockwood became a debt due
by the late Mr. YV. H. Lockwood to
the pub'ic and are preferred claims,
fcnd the executrix is directed to pay the
same in full.
The question as to the set-offs are
referred to the Master of Equity to
take testimony as to ' the status of
each particular claim.
Messrs. VV. ft. Tillinghnst and W. J.
Thomas, representing the general
creditors, have given notice of ap
peal.
Mi. Thomas Talblrd represents the
town and eounty treasurers.
Mr. Galatly represents Mrs. Lock
wood, the executrix.
CIGARETTE FIEND'S ACT.
Stole a Horse and Hiikkv nt Swain*,
boro unci Sold Them nt Nlillen.
Stillmore, Ca., Jan. I.—Will Chester,
a young white man. was arrested here
yesterday hy Marshal Milner on a tel
egram from Milica. Chester stole a
horse and buggy front the stables of
Meadors A Strickland at Swalnsboro,
and carried the property to Mlllen,
where he sold it to a hotel man by the
name of Awtrey for *35. He took the
money and boarded a passing train for
Ftillmore, where he was taken in cus
tody by the marshal and lodged in
Jnil
It is the opinion of the people here
that Chester is crazy and is not re
sponsible for his actions, as he is
known to be a cigarette fiend. He takes
hls arrest coolly and'does not deny
taking the horse and buggy. It is un
derstood that Chester will be vigor
ously prosecuted.

Sort. Kirkland 1 * Ofllres.
Waycross, Ga., Jan. 1. —The dwelling
of Rev. W. C. Johnson, on the corner
of Third and Jones streets, was de
stroyed by fire at 2 o'clock this morn
ing. The fire department made a great
run after the alarm was turned in,
but on account of the distance and the
lack of water facilities, the building
was destroyed in a short time. The
department, however, prevented near
by dwellings from being consumed.
The house destroyed was insured for a
small amount.
The general offices of Superintendent
D. F Kirkland's division of the At
lantic Coast I-ine are now located in
Waycross. The clerks in the general
offices of Superintendent Kirkland, ar
rived here from Thomasville this morn
ing. and a car load of office furniture
also came in. The offices will be lo
cated for the present on the second
floor of the Southern Hotel building in
the quarters formerly occupied by Su
perintendent George W. Haines. The
four train dispatchers for this division
will be located on the second floor of
the passenger station. An additional
telegraph wire has recently been con

their use in handling the trains. Su

HOW TO DRINK MILK,
Why It Dienvree* With Some People.
When one needs a reviving stimulant
after exhaustion nothing can rival the
effects of hot milk sipped slowly.
Some people say they cannot digest
milk, and these are the people who
drink it down quickly so that the di
gestive acids, in playing around it,
form large curds which give trouble
before they can be absorbed.
The right way is to sip the milk in
small amounts, so that each mouthful,
as It descends into the stomach, is
surrounded by the gastric fluid, and
when the whole glassful is down the
effect is that of a spongy mass of
curds, in and out of which the keen
gastric juices course, speedily doing
their work of turning the curd into
peptones that the tissues can take up.
To make sure of complete digestion
take one or two of Stuart's Dyspepsia
Tablets afterwards, as the pepsin and
diastase they contain Increase the quan
tity and efficiency of the gastric juices
and supply the natural digestive fer
ments which all weak stomachs lack.
Miss Anna Folger, a professional
nurse, speaking of the value of Stuart's
Tablets In convalescence says: "In
adult patients recovering from severe
illness and especially In children Where
milk disagrees, one or two tablets ov
ercome any 6 difficulty and seem to
strengthen the stomach in a remarka
bly short time. I myself have used
them dally for years, when my own
digestion has suffered from the irregu
larities and loss of sleep consequent
upon my occupation.”
Not only children and invalids, but
professional people and others whose
meals are necessarily hurried or irregu
lar will find Stuart's Dyspepsia Tab
lets of the greatest value in keeping up
the tone and digestive vigor of the
stomach.
They contain the active digestive fer
ments the lack of which is really the
only cause of indigestion and stomach
troubles, and the regular daily use of
them after meals will probably cure
any case of stomach trouble except
such as arises from cancer or ulcera
tion.
Many druggists have said that they
sell more / Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets
than all other stomach remedies com
bined.
