WORKED THE BUGGY GAME.
Swindlers Made. Their Appearance
in Floridn and Are In Jail.
Tallahassee, Fla., Jan. 2.—Two slick
crooks, who have been working the
fanners of Florida for some time, were
arrested by Sheriff Pearce and Officer
Dennard at an early hour yesterday
morning.
A bout-ten days ago two well dressed
strangers made their appearance in the
Moore settlement on the Oklockonee
river, ten miles west of Tallahassee.
They Introduced themselves as J. D.
Jackson and J. C. Clark, and claimed
to be representing Sears. Roebuck &
Cos. of Chicago. By their pleasing con
versational powers the men soon ingra
tiated themselves on the good graces
of those with whom they came in con
tact. and succeeded in taking many
orders, always insisting on a cash pay
ment to bind the cbntract.
Walter Moore purchased a buggy, for
■which he paid $8 down. His brother,
Thos. Moore bought a cultivator,plank
•ug down sls in advance.
afternoon Dr. George paid
a visit to the home of Mr. Walter
Moore, and while there was informed
of the transactions of the two men.
He immediately stamped them as
frauds. Moore became suspicious and
drove to town Wednesday morning,
when he telegraphed to Chicago for
Information. The answer came back
from Sears, Roebuck & Cos., that they
employed no agents, and anybody
claiming to be their agent was a
fraud. He then went before Judge
Whitfield and swore out warrants for
the arrest of the two men.
The warrants were turned over to
Sheriff Pearce and Officer Dennard.
The men had in the meantime become
suspicious, and when their rooms at
the Hightower house were visited they
could not be found. The search was
continued, however, and Jackson and
Clark were discovered hiding in the
hedge In Mr. Hightower's front yard.
They offered no resistance when ar
rested, but tried to compromise with
Moore by promising to refund his mon
ey and pay the costs. The latter refus
ed to consider the proposition, and the
men are now in the Leon county Jail.
EATONTON ELECTRIC IIILL.
Efforts to Put the Concern Into
Hands of u Rrcrivcr.
Eatonton, Ga., Jan. 2.—Ever since
the Eatonton Electric Cotton Mill
closed last September as a consequence
of the failure of the Putnam County
Banking Company, the officers and
stockholders have labored assiduously
to keep the affairs of the mill out of
the courts and to reorganize the busi
ness. It seems that every effort will
fail, and the tangled affairs of the
company are destined to go through
the mazy and tedious processes of the
courts.
There are three eases now pending
before the United States court, seeking
to have a receiver appointed and to
throw the mill into bankruptcy. The
petition for a permanent receiver .vas
heard to-day in Macon before Judge
Alexander Proudfit, referee In bank
ruptcy for the Southern district of
Georgia. The indebtedness of the mill
is about $84,000. Besides the above
cases against the mill, is one pending
before the state courts, seeking the
same end.
Owing to the amount involved and
the prominence of the parties interest
ed, and the probable effect on the busi
ness interests of the community, in
case the mill Is plaeed in bankruptcy,
the matter is watched with intense
concern. Capt. A. S. Reid is the tem
porary receiver.

AFFAIRS AT TIPTON.
Two Prluc Hogs—Election of Frater
nal Order*—Other Matter*.
Tifton, Ga.. Jan. 2.—Mr. Dan Walker,
living near Tifton, killed his two fam
ous porkers Friday of last week, and
the two weighed, after dressing, 1,600
pounds, one weighing 750 and the other
850. He was compelled to cut them
up to weigh them, or the total would
doubtless have been several pounds
more. One of the hogs has been un
able to stand up for two months, and
recently Mr. Walker was obliged to re
duce his tiesh, so that he lost at least
200 pounds, and although he was much
the largest hog all his life, he weighed
100 less than his mate. From the two
Mr. Walker took 240 pounds of fat,
making a total of 1,840 pounds for the
two hogs. Although of good stock, Mr.
Walker gave the hogs no special atten
tion, letting them run in the woods
until they were nearly a year old. Nfr.
Walker says he has not lost a hog
from cholera In ten years, and that he
can readily and certainly cure the
most obstinate case of that disease.

THE WEEK IN TRADE.
What Don A Co.'a Review Will Sny
Of It.
New York. Jan. 2.—R. G. Dun &
Co.'s Weekly Review of Trade to-mor
row will say:
Despite the interruption of a holiday,
taking of inventories and other dis
turbing elements Incidental to the clos
ing of the old year, the past week has
been far from dull. Consumers .were
not perceptibly lessening purchases,
while the approach of higher freight
rates accelerated the shipment of
goods.
Transporting facilities continue ut
terly inadequate, the pressing need for
fuel diverting rolling stock from other
classes of freight. New wage scales
have become effective, largely enhanc
ing the purchasing power of the peo
ple. The new year opens with every
prospect of exceptional activity in all
branches of business.
Railway earnings thus far available
for December show a gain of 7.7 per
cent, over 1901. and 10.9 per cent, over
1900, while for the full year there are
increases of 4.1 and 16.5 per cent.,
respectively, notwithstanding the
heavy loss of coal traffic.
The questions of higher freight rates
complicates the situation regarding
iron and steel, but new orders are con
stantly coming forward, and the ac
tivity of plants would equal capacity
were It not for the fuel shortage. Quo
tations of all products in this Industry
are fully maintained with a tendency
toward still higher prices because of
freights and fuel. Textile mills are
busy with only a hand-to-mouth home
demand for cotton goods, but export
buying for China continues large.
Farm products weakened as visible
supplies increased, and reports from
the West indicate that much more
grain Is offered for shipment than the
railroads will accept.
