One of the Lar/tot Ever Held In
Sivainsboro.
Swains boro, Ga., Feb. 26.—The funer
al of Judge G. S. Rountree here Wed
nesday afternoon was largely attend
ed. All business was suspended for
the day and many persons from sur
rounding counties came to pay the
last mark of respect .to the distin
guished dead. At 10:30 o’clock the re
mains of Senator Rountree were es
corted by the Swainsboro Guards to
the Court Course, where they lay in
state until 2 o'clock. Hundreds of
people called for a final glance at the
face of their countryman. At 2
o'clock funeral services were held in
the Methodist Church, where several
eloquent tributes were paid. From the
church the procession, consisting of
the pallbearers, the local lodge of Ma
sons, the military company and hun
dreds of friends and relatives, moved
to the Baptist Cemetery, where the
interment took place with Masonic
and military honors. Probably the
largest crowd that ever witnessed a
burial in Swainesboro was present.
The Rountree family is one of the
largest, most prominent and influential
in the county.
Judge Rountree was president of the
Bank of Swainesboro, and it is prob
able that Vice President Green Bell
will be elevated to this position.
It is probable that an election will
be called at an early date to select a
man to till Judge Rountree's unex
pired term in the state Senate from
the Sixteenth district. C'ol. R. J. Wil
liams, of Swainesboro. is being prom
inently spoken of for the position, and
there is no doubt but that he can very
easily get it if he so desires.
SHOT HV HIS TEACHER.
Inrnlly Boy Objected to Brin*
Whipped.
Spartanburg. S. C.. Feb. 26. —Avery
Unfortunate affair occurred at Inman
late Tuesday afternoon, in which Ed
ward Foster, the 18-year-old son of
Gabe Foster, was shot and probably
fatally injured by his school teacher,
W. B. Pitts. Both parties to the
trouble are agreed upon these facts:
Several days ago Pitts had occasion
to administer hoggings to three pupils
of his school. This incensed the young
men against the teacher, and they
agreed to suffer no chastisement in
the future.
Pitts heard of such an agreement
and on the morning of the day which
the shooting occurred he took the pis
tol to school with him. ns the boys are
strong, sturdy fellows, while Pitts is
of slight build and delicate.
In the afternoon lie tailed Foster,
after school hours, telling him that it
was necessary to administer a whip
ping and proceeded to lay on the
switch. The boy grabbed the teacher.
The latter, in order to frighten him,
so he jays, pulled the pistol. Foster
caught the weapon, causing it to tire.
The bullet entered Foster's abdomen,
ranged downward and is considered
very serious.
Pitts is the son of Rev. J. D. Pitts,
pastor of the First Baptist Church at
Laurens, and is a young man of high
character and reputation. Foster's
condition is unchanged this morning.
