THINKS HE HAS FOUND
PERPETUAL MOTION.
South Carolina Man Se<*nr* a
Patent on a Machine.
Columbia, S. C., April 13.—Since the
beginning of time men have been
wrestling with the problem of per
petual motion. Many a brilliant mind
has given way under the strain of
continual effort to find the solution.
To-day the lunatic asylums contain
men whose minds have been wrecked
in the effort to find some way to make
a wheel turn everlastingly of its own
volition. Years ago the United States
patent offices became so congested
with applications for patents of im
practicable machines that Congress
passed an act prohibiting the patent
ing of perpetual motion machines un
less they could be shown to be of prac
tical use in developing power.
Nothwithstanding all this there is
an architect in the city of Sumter in
this state—Mr. D. G. Zeigler, who
claims to have solved the problem. Mr.
Zeigler has been working quietly on
his machine for a long time, resolved
to say nothing of it until the proper
time. He has just secured a patent on
it from the United States patent office,
the first that has been allowed in for
ty years on a perpetual motion ma
chine. And on Saturday he was no
tified by his attorney In Washington
that all patents had been secured in
foreign countries also.
The United States patent office in
proceeding to give a netailed mechan
ical description of the machine, which
is hardly intelligible to any but ex
pert mechanics, says:
“This invention utilizes the grav
itative force of a traveling weight ar
ranged to move in a circle and during
each revolution to pass towards and
from the center of rotation in a path,
to bring the preponderance of weight
on the descending side of the rotative
support, carrying the same weight
whereby power is generated to per
form effective work.”
FARMERS’ INSTITUTE.
The Programme Arranged for the
Dublin Meeting—Other Matter*.
Dublin, Ga., April 13.—Nearly all of
the speakers for the Farmers’ Institute,
which will be held in this county May

COTTON FUTURES
SOAR SKYWARD
New High Prices for May and July Options Were
Recorded at 10.63 and 10.20 Respectively.
New York. April 13.—New high
prices for May and July cotton were
recorded on the local exchange to-day.
Other options advanced from 1 to 3
points.
The early strength was due to ac
tive bull support, no less than to short
covering. In the second hour there
came another sharp rise, in which
May advanced to 10.52 c and July to,
10.12 c. No specific news accompanied
the new' movement, and the advance
seemed to result largely from further
short covering. •
During the early part of the ses
sion sentiment was really bearish,
chiefly because of the weather and
general crop conditions
The lock-out of the spinners at
invited to address the farmers on the
subject of sugar cane and syrup.
The institute will be held for the
counties of Laurens, Emanuel and
Johnson, and it is expected that a num
ber of farmers will attend.
The following is the programme so
far anbngcd: "Importance of Judi
cious Selection of Planting Seed for
Farm and Garden," Dr. H. C. White.
Athens; "Best Pasture Grasses and
Soils Best Suited to Each,” B. D.
Lumsden, Macon; “Best Forage Crops
and How to Grow and Cure Them,”
B. D. Lumsden, Macon; "Family Fruit
and Vegetable Gardens.” E. A. Ross,
Marshallville; "Corn Culture,” E. A.
Boss, Marshallville; “Importance of
Establishing Standard Grade for Com
mercial Syrup and Best Methods to At
tain This Uniform Standard,” Capt. D.
G. Purse, Sav*annah; "The Barter and
Penny Sales of a Frugal Farmers'
Frau,” to be filled; "Care of Raising
Cattle, Horses and Swine on the
Farm,” Prof. Willoughby; "The Ideal
Country Home,” Mrs. George W.
Mathews, Dublin.
Anew hotel for Dublin is the latest
enterprise to be projected. It is the
intention of the promoters to erect a
hotel at a cost of $40,000. Already more
titan half of this amount has been
subscribed. It is probable that the ho
tel will be built four stories in hight,
and that it will be equipped with ele
vators and all modern conveniences.
Mr. Clark Grier, who is a most success
ful promoter of public enterprises, is
back of the scheme. Dublin has an
excellent hotel, but it is not large
enough to accommodate the travel that
comes to Dublin.

The Satilla Manufacturing Company
has again received the contract to
ice fruit and vegetable care at this
city, and already several cars of Flor
ida vegetables have been iced.
Mr. C. C. Sheldon, of this city, has
purchased the Paine interest in the
Palne-Dunaway Drug Company in
Valdosta, and left for that city this
morning. Mr Sheldon will remove to
Valdosta.
The first actual work on the car
factory buildings commenced this
morning, when several car loads of
building material were hauled out
over the new side tracks and unloaded.
Contractor T. J. Darling was* present
with a gang of twenty-five carpenters
and other workmen and commenced
preparing the foundations for the
buildings. A force from the Atlantic
and Birmingham Railroad is still at
work, and about two more miles of
tracks are to be laid on the car fac
tory property.

Ur the Supreme Court in the Bunk
Tax Case.
Washington, April 13.—The United
States Supreme Court to-day sustained
the contention of the city of Memphis,
Tenn., in the tax proceeding of the
Union and Planters Bank versus that
city. The bank claimed exemption from
taxation. The opinion sustained the de
cision of the United States Circuit
Court, but held that the Circuit Court
of Appeal* had not been justified in as
suming jurisdiction in the case.

In the last half-hour May cotton
touched 10.63 c and July 10.20 c, the rec
ord prices. It was understood on the
exchange that Wall street was a
heavy buyer of July for short account.
The bull leader supported May during
the entire session.
May and July cotton sold off In the
early afternoon and there was con
siderable profit-taking. Just before
the close fresh orders came In and
prices advanced to the highest leve) of
the day.
May sold up to 10.63 c and July to
10.20 c, with much covering by shorts.
Trading in the options other than
May and July was light and had prac

WRECK AT HELENA.
Luckily the l)nmnue Done Was Not
Great.
Helena, Ga„ April 13.—About 4 a. m.
the south bound passenger train on
the Southern Railway, ran into an
open switch and struck some freight
cars about four cars-length from the
open switch The engine is on .the
ground, off the front trucks The
mail car left its trucks and rests on
some lumber alongside the track. One
freight car is badly shaken up and the
ends are crushed some, but the engin
eer must have had his train well un
der control to have done so little
damage so near the switch.
Only the engineer and fireman were
hurt slightly. The main line was not
injured, so trade is not delayed.
SECRETARIES OF STATE
Are to Hold a Convention, Probably
at St. Louia.
Columbia, S. C„ April 13.—Secretary
of State Jesse T. Gantt has recently
been in correspondence with the Secre
tary of State of Missouri relative to
calling a convention of the secretaries
of state of all the states in the union.
Mr. Gantt suggested that the first
convention be held in St. Louis. Mo., on
the day of the dedication exercises of
the St. Louis exposition. The Secretary
of State of Missouri heartily indorsed
the plan, but did not think the date
suggested by Mr. Gantt suitable, be
cause that day would be crowded with
the dedication exercises.
