• To be seventy years
young is sometimes
far more cheerful and
hopeful than to be forty
years old ”
Oliver Wendell Holmes
A youth of more than seventy
years has been attained by the
Gorham Cos.
Silversmiths
which is more hopeful
and * cheerful to-day
than when it was forty
years old. For three
generations Gorham
Silverware has been a
welcome guest in Am

never before marked
by greater refinement
of design or more dex

its purpose. And never
has its price been more
moderate.

AFFAIRS AT EMORY.
Content for Speakers at Commence
ment to Be Held Thursday.
Emory College, Oxford, Ga., April
15.—1 t was announced to-day by Presi
dent James E. Dickey that the annual
contest for speakers on the commence
ment programme would occur Thurs
day at 2 o'clock. The interest in ora
tory this year is greater than for sev
eral years, and as a result the contests
will be close. Twenty-one men in the
sophomore class have signified their
intention to participate in the contest.
In the freshman class there are some
fifteen or twenty who will enter the
contest. Instead of ten places to be
awarded in the freshman class as here
tofore, only six places will be awarded
this year. Likewise in the sophomore
class there will be only eight places
in the commencement programme,
against twelve of last year.
Emory’s annual field day will be held
on the college campus next Monday.
The greatest interest is being manifest
ed. Manager Lee has received a large
number of prizes to be contested for.

DYNAMITE GUN SOLD.
Mu* Erected at Hilton Head Two
Years Ago at a Cost of g.'IOn.OOO.
Beaufort, S. C., April 15.—Mr.
Charles E. Danner, at an auc
tion sale, became the owner of the
big Hilton Head dynamite gun. in
cluding the air compressors, and oth
er valuable accessories. The pur
chase, it is said, was made at a very
low figure. This gun was erected
two years ago, at a cost to the govern
ment of nearly 1300,000, but was found
unsuited to the needs of Hilton Head
point.
At Fort Fremont on Tuesday oc
curred the trial test of three ten-inch
disappearing guns. Each charge con
sisted of 285 pounds of powder, which
fired a 575 pound projectile. One shot
from each gun was fired. The test
is considered satisfactory.
The Dolphin left here yesterday for
Norfolk. Her commander, Capt.
George Stoney, is a native of Beau
fort, and while here was the guest of
his friend Admiral Beardslee. The ad

to Norfolk and Washington.
JAMES COOK ACQUITTED.
Not Guilty of the Murder of Bob
Croft, In Colquitt County.
Moultrie, Ga., April 15.—Superior
Court adjourned this morning. The
last case tried was that of James Cook,
charged with the killing of Bob Croft.
A day and night was consumed and
the jury after being out ten minutes
returned a verdict of not guilty. The
killing was the outcome of a family
fued and occurred about a year ago
near Hempstead in the lower part of
the county. One Sunday afternoon.
Cook was driving by the home of
Croft who called him and went out
to his buggy. Some past trouble was
brought up and a fight with knives
resulted. Croft was killed outright
and Cook was very painfully wounded.
Both belonged to prominent families
and the affair caused a great deal of
feeling in the community. Most of the
evidence went to show that Croft was
a bad character and provoked the
row.
Tom Johnson, colored, who was tried
for the killing of Tom Moore, at Cor
bett's mill last November, was found
guilty of murder but recommended to
mercy and was given life imprison
ment.
Fire was discovered last night in
the store of J. S. Ross on West Broad
street. The damage was comparatively
small, the entire loss not exceeding
$2,000 all of which was fully covered
by insurance.
