BARTOW SEWS SOTES.
Many S'ppetablei Moving Com
mencement Exercise*.
Bartow, Fla., May 28.—The vegetable
season is at its hight in this county,
and large quantities of vegetables are
going forward by express and by
freight. The shipments by express last
week amounted to 2.160 crates by ex
press and three carloads by fast
freight. Nearly 700 crates were loaded
Saturday night alone by the Southern
Express. It is expected that shipments
this week will nearly, if not quite, be
double what they were last week.
The principal vegetables going for
ward at this time are tomatoes,
squashes and cucumbers. Cantaloupes
have not turned out so well here, and
but few are being shipped.
The principal shippers from here are
Lyle & Cos., J. R. Davis. S. P. James, C.
M. Stidham, Ed North, S. T. Page
and Moore Bros.
Capt. Warrent Tyler of the Oak City
Guards Is In receipt of a telegram from
Capt. O. I. Straub, again deferring the
inspection of the Oak City Guards.
Tuesday night concluded the com
mencement exercises of the tenth ses
sion of the South Florida Military In
stitute, which began Sunday evening.
Cadet Bradley Wilson delivered a
cordial address of welcome. Cadet
Captain W. E. Bunker delivered an
oration on "A National Spirit, a Na
tion's Strength.”
Owing to the hot weather, the ath
letic sports that had been advertised
were called off. but the guard mount
ing. drilling, etc., were very much en
joyed by the large crowds that went
to the institute grounds. The cadets
passed In review, after which there was
an exciting sham battle between the
cadets of the South Florida Institute
and the Oak City Guards.
There were but two graduates in
the class of 1903, Cadets Bradley C.
Wilson and Irving Michell Hyde. Mr.
Wilson s subject was "Marathon,” and
Mr. Hyde's was "The Age of Electrici
ty.” Both W’ere well rendered. The ad
dress of the evening was delivered by
Hon. Robert W. Davis. •
In reference to the military institute,
Mr. Davis said the state should have
one good military school, and it should
be located at Bartow. It is the duty
of the state to foster this school, and
it should give it five times what it
does, and Mr. Davis said if he had it
in his power he would see that it was
done.
Col. H. P. Bay*a delivered the diplo
mas to the graduates and read the list
of those who had won distinguished
records during the term. The military'
medal was won by Cadet Charles T.
Richardson, Col. W. H. Johnson deliv

Excellent Shnpe.
Beaufort, S. C., May 28— According
i to Ae statement of Census Expert H.
IC. Allen, who yesterday finished his
i official examination of the w'ealth,
debt, expenditures and taxation of
, Beaufort county. Beaufort leads the
state in financial condition. The re-
I celpts of the county show an increase
of 20 per cent, in the last two years.
There are only two other counties in
the state that are not borrowing to
meet current expenses. The increase
in receipts if due largely to an increase
In the value of real property, amount
ing in the last two years to $145,000,
or about 9 per cent. But the gain is by
no means confined to real estate and
extends to nearly every source of rev
enue. The town stands well among
the best six municipalities of the state.
It has no floating debt, and only $9,000.
bonded indebtedness.
The usual preparation for observing
the Memorial Day on the 30th are be
ing made here by the negroes. Large
excursions will be run from Savannah,
Charleston, Brunswick, Augusta and
many other points. Large crowds are
expected and Indications point to the
red lemonade jubilee of former occa
sions.

Fonnd Xot Guilty at Ilenufnrt.
Beaufort, S. C., May 28.—The crim
inal docket of the Court of General
Sessions was concluded thif evening. In
the case of William Thomas, alias
"Chinaman Jim,” who killed a negro
on the steamer Clayton during an
excursion to Daufuskie Island a short
time ago, he was declared not guilty,
having killed the man in self-defense.
After being out an hour, the jury
brought in a verdict of not guilty in
the case of D. G. Braddy, charged
with killing Private Satter at Fort
Fremont last summer. Braddy belongs
to the Sixteenth Company of coast
artillery, and his term of enlistment
soon expires.
In the case of R. O. Oeusler, J. S.
Goetz and W. H. Ohlandt, whose
liquors were recently seized and were
afterwards charged with violating the
dispensary law, the grand jury failed
to bring Indictments.

ARRESTED AT DAWSON.
Dawson. Ga., May 28.—The Rabbit
Foot Company, a negro minstrel or
ganization, by order of Judge Shef
field, had its band arrested yesterday
and carried before the judge for dis
turbing the workings of the Superior
Court, which was in session. In the
midst of a case, Judge Sheffield stop
ped the proceedings and ordered the
sheriff to go down and arrest the
whole band and bring them befote
him. This the officer did. much to
the surprise and discomfiture of the
music makers, who, after repeatedly
pleading their ignorance of the court’s
session, were released by the judge,
with the parting injunction to go and
play no more—that is, where the court
would get the benefit of their music.
