WORK OF THE TORNADO.
Mayor Report* Tliat There Were
107 Victim* At Gainesville.
Gainesville. Ga., June 28.—Mayor P.
N. Parker, chairman General Relief
Committee, submitted to a meeting
held this afternoon a report in respect
to relief work to date, in part as fol
lows:
"The number of dead caused by the
tornndo. including those who have since
died, has reached 107. Three hundred
and sixty-eight were more or less in
jured by the storm: fifty-six
of whom were so badly Injured
as to render it necessary to take
them to the hospitals. Of this number
forty-five have sufficiently recov
ered to return to their homes, and six
more are now able to go home; and
through the advice of physicians it Is
thought that the other five can be safe
ly carried to their homes and there
treated until they ultimately recover.
Jt is not now r thought that there will
be any more deaths.
"Through the great kindness of a
generous public we have been able to
properly feed and care for every person
who suffered from the storm, and also
have supplied them with as much
clothing ns they lost. Something over
300 homes have been replenished out of
the abundance contributed to our aid,
consisting of beds, bedding, stoves, ta
bles. chairs, crockery and other neces
sary articles, thus rendering the peo
ple comfortable.
‘‘lt has been impossible to obtain the
names of all the physicians and nurses
■who have visited us, or we would be
glad to mention each one and specify
the splendid work done, but probably
over 100 physicians have come here. In
addition to our local physicians, and
volunteered their services, in minister
ing to the wounded; half as many
trained nurses have also volunteered
their services and have worked early
and late for suffering humanity. In
addition to this, a large number of our
town ladles have given their constant
attention to the wants of the injured.
Our own doctors have labored early
and late and won for themselves praise
and gratitude of our people.
‘‘Our ministers of the gospel have
worked faithfully and zealously in
burying the dead and comforting the
distressed.
“All the agencies have lent a helping
hand—the telegraph and telephone, the
newspapers have been quick and ready
to herald to the world our troubles and
ask for assistance, all without charge.
"At a meeting of the Relief Commit
tee Friday afternoon last a resolution
was passed requesting each person
whose home w'as destroyed or Injured
to rebuild or repair said home ns early
as possible and appropriating 50 per
cent, of the amount of the damage to
each one to aid in rebuilding his or her
home; the committee also authorised
the payment of 50 per cent, to the trus
tees of the churches injured and de
stroyed by the storm for the purpose
of aiding in the rebuilding of aald
houses of worship. We hope to be able
to pay even more than this, but can
not tell definitely at this time Just what
amount can be paid.,
"1 will state, however, In behalf of
the committee, that every dollar in our
treasury will be judiciously and Impar
tially distributed only for the benefit of
the real sufferers, as Intended by the
donors.”
physicians on strike.
Will Not link* I.nnncy Examina
tions for SO.
Columbia, S. C., Juno 29. —A unique
strike Is on at Walhnlla, Oconee coun
ty. Recently the board of County
Commissioners decided that $3 would
be sufficient to pay physicians to make
a lunacy examination. The doctors
think that the said amount is insuf
ficient. and on this account a prospec
tive inmate for the insane asylum is
lying in jail at Walhalla for the want
of medical examination. So far all
physicians have refused to make the
necessary examination. but It Is
thought some adjustment will be made
In a short time.
Street Car Boycott.
Although the Jim Crow street car
ordinance will not go into effect for
several days, the boycott of the street
pairs seems to have started already, for
the absence of negroes was noted by
every one yesterday. There were a few
of that race who had taken no notice
of it, but they were “guyed" at times
as the cars passed groups of negroes on
the streets.
Just what will be the outcome cannot
be conjectured, but the City Council
will hardly repeal the ordinance, and
the white people will have the cars all
to themselves until the negroes see fit
to call oft their boycott.
