CHARGED WITH MURDER.
Negroes Held for Killing Smith.
VRIdOHtB \ew.
Valdosta. Ga., July 3.—Two negroes,
Alonza Jenkins and Wallace Page,
were arrested last night in the
Clyattevtlle district, charged with the
assassination of Silas Smith, a well
known negro, several weeks ago’. The
officers have been working on the case
for several weeks, and they secured
enough testimony to warrant the ar
rest of the two men.
They were brought here and were to
be tried this morning, but the commit
ment hearing was postponed until next
Friday. The killing appears to have
been a most cowardly one. Silas Smith
being shot down at night as he walked
through his house.
Mr. and Mrs. .1. T. Peacock have
endowed a department at the public
library in memory of their young
granddaughter, who died two years
ago. They gave quite a large sum of
money to buy new books for the de
partment and will add to It every
year. The books will be for children
•ltd this is the kind that are most
geeded now. The library's funds are
shout exhausted and the vacation
creates a large demand for children's
books.
The large new club house of the
Ocean Pond Fishing Club, at Lake
Park, is completed, together with the
boat houses, bathrooms, etc. The club
house is said to be the handsomest
structure of the kind in this section
and the members, who are scattered all
over the state, expect to have some
big times in their delightful retreat.
Rev. R. O. Smith, the well known
evangelist, is here conducting a series
•f revival services in the tabernacle.
Rev. Mr. Smith is a son of Rev. G. G.
Smith of Macon.

XKWS OF AMUHICIS.
Fourth of July Celebrated a Day
Ahead of Time.
Amertcus, Ga.. July 3.—Rather than
close stores Saturday, always the busi
est day of the week, the merchants of
Americus closed to-day instead and
Americus celebrated the glorious
Fourth a little In advance. The pre
mature holiday passed without incident
or accident.
Not in years has there been such
activity in real estate in Americus, and
daily sales are made at good prices;
for in advance of values a year or two
ago. Dozens of handsome residences
are going up, besides business houses
and industrial plants.
The Cudahy Company will establish
an agency In Americus this week. The
other big meat concerns have agencies
here already.
The recent rains have greatly bene
fited crons in this section. Cotton is
growing rapidly and has good color.
On many farms the cotton Is waist
high, while on others the plant Is small
er, but vigorous. The prospect Is very
good just now, but the late season will
prevent any early movement of the
crop as heretofore.
The Americus Gun Club has com
pleted all details for the great Inter
state trap shooting contest here July
14, 15 and 16, which will be the great
est gun contest witnessed In Georgia
In years. All the manufacturers of
arms and ammunition in the North will
send representatives, while gunners of
a dozen states will contest for the
prizes.

TO-DAY
History repeats itself, each man first pays rent,

CRIMES BY NEGROES.
Hell Boy Cuts Waiter Fatnlly In
Culnnibln Hotel.
Columbia, S. C., July 3. —Walter
Stephenson, a colored waiter at
Wright s Hotel, and Joe Friday, one
of the bell boys, became involved In
a row In the rear of the lobby of the
hotel yesterday afternoon over a game
of craps, which resulted In Friday cut
ting Stephenson to death. Henry
Weathers, another employe of the ho
tel, was the only eye witness of the af
fair. He heard some altercation Just
outside of the lobby and rushing to
the scene he saw Friday draw a pocket
knife some six inches In length with
which he slashed at Stephenson, strik
ing him across the right shoulder, sev
ering the main artery. As the blade
entered his side Stephenson caught the
bell boy and held him by the wrist,
but he slashed again and again. As
his assailant jerked himself from his
grasp Stephenson staggered into the
lobby and called for help. A physician
was Immediately summoned, but be
fore his arrival the wounded man had
almost bled to death. The negro was
removed to one of the sample rooms
and a saline solution was Injected Into
his body in the hope of saving his life.
This proved a temporary relief, but the
loss of blood had been so great that
the negro died a few hours later. Fri
day made his escape and has not yet
been captured. Stephenson was one of
the best known waiters at Wright's
Hotel and had many friends among the
white people. He leaves a wife and sev
eral children.
