Bobby Walthour and Bennie Munro,
who have been spending the past month
in Savannah getting themselves in
shape for the six-day grind that will
commence in Madison Square Garden
next Monday, will leave to-day on the
Kansas City for New York.
Mrs. AValthour and two children will
accompany the team to New York. It
js the custom of the faithful wife of
the champion to make her headquar
ters at the track during the race, and
she looks after the preparation of all
food and nourishment in person.
The big race will start next Sun
day night at 12:10, and the finish will
come at 12 o’clock on Saturday night
following.
Never In Better Shape.
Never did a team enter the famous
six-day race in as good physical con
dition as will the Southern pair, Wal
thour and Munro have been working
as neither has ever worked before,
and with Gussie Lawson to look after
them they have covered mile after
mile of road around Savannah, and
each man has ridden not less than
seventy-five miles every day since he
has been here. Both men have taken
off all fat and added some hard flesh
and muscle. Walthour tipped the beam
at 161 last night, and said he had
never been in such form as he is now.
Munro, who will do most of the plug
ging in the race, just commenced to
get his gait the early part of last
week, and since Wednesday has been
riding from fifty to sixty miles at gaits
from 2:12 to 2:25 on country roads
without the least fatigue.
AValthour AVill Do the Sprinting.
AValthour will be depended on to do
the sprinting for the team. Time and
again he has sprinted an eighth in
12.01. This is as fast as Prank Kramer
has ever gone the distance, and he
holds the world's record for short dis
tance sprinting.
Both Walthour and Munro have
trained in a different manner from
any other cyclist, doing most of their
work behind the famous "Candy. Jr.,’’
with Gussie Lawson in charge. They,
with their sprint wheels, would nde
miles at 1:30 to 1:36, and then go un
paced for fifty and sixty miles, aver
aging from 2:12 to 2:26.
Seventeen Teama Entered.
Seventeen teams will line up before
the starter in the big race. The fast
est teams in the world have entered,
and this race will go down as one
of the most famous ever run in Amer
ica. Every team has a grudge to wipe
out and the officials will be kept busy
watching the riders, for the team work
and tricks that will be attempted will
be unusually hard to keep up with.
The Southern team will be combined
against, for both Munro and AValthour
have had many grudges stored up
against them. George Leander has
several old scores to settle with Wai
thour, and he is also after Moran and
Turville. The Bedell brothers, in turn,
have it in for Leander, as it will be
remembered they had some trouble in
Atlanta last year.
All After the Black Team.
All the riders will try and do up the
black team of Dove and Hedspeth, but
beyond this the “Cracker team" will
receive the most attention when it
comes to dirty work.
The crack French riders will be in
the race, for they have as manager one
of the best in the business, Tom Eck.
who knc.ws the weakness of every
American rider and who has handled
nearly every one of them. He has the
knack of putting his men in the b°st
shape and the quickest, and knows
how to save them from a hard race,
such as this one will be.
The,race will be of greatest interest
to Southerners on account of the
Southern entry, Walthour and Mun
ro. Also watch them in the fight
against the black team. Dove and
Hedspeth, both of whom are negroes
of the blackest kind and both splendid
riders, and will be in the race from
start to finish if not crippled, as Heda-
Plh was last year in the same race.
The entry of Kramer, the champton
professional sprinter, with that of Wil
lie Fenn, who finished well up in the
last and was Kramer’s mate in all the
races this year, will make it very fast
for the first twenty-four hours of the
race. They may not last the full twen
ty-four hours, but will stay in long
enough to make it so warm for the
other riders that they will be glad to
ree them quiet.
Many Will Quit First flay.
In this first day of the race will
be the finish of quite a few of the
riders and Tuesday morning will see
only ten or twelve teams left, who will
fight it out to the finish, but with the
k“en and bitter rivalry between at
least eight teams the fight will be
"arm up to the last minute of the
race.
There is Moran and Mayo. Butier-

Captain.
Saturday saw the close of the
college football season for 1903, and
already steps are being taken for get
ting together strong teams for next
year.
In many respects the season has been
one of the most brilliant in the his
tory of the great game of Rugby. There
have been surprises galore, and the
Hitherto invincible big four in the
East has been broken, and there are
new aspirants for honors.
In the South the championship is
still unsettled. With four colleges
claiming the championship, it is to be
expected that next year will see the
bitferest rivalry yet exhibited in the
contests between the colleges.
With few . exceptions the Southern
elevens next year will be the strongest
that have yet been put out. Each year
higher priced and better capacitated
coaches are employed, until now, with
nearly as much available material as
some of the Eastern colleges, the
Southern gridiron struggles are as in
tensely interesting as any of those
played on Soldiers, Franklin, or Yale
field. Nearly every eleven that play
ed this fall will return a majority of
this season’s team, which means that
in place of raw material veterans who
have faced the firing line will be on
hand with the experience of at least
one campaign behind them.
Clemson’s Ontlook.
Clemson loses but three men—Gar
rison, Sitton and Sadler. Hanvey may
not return, but to take his place Fur
man's crack fullback for three sea
sons, Holland, will be eligible next
year and according to Coach Heisman,
is fully the equal of the present Clem
son star. With seven old men back
at least and Holland on hand with the
new material expected. Clemson's
prospects are radiant again. 'I
think." remarked Prof. Rigg3 to-day
"that Clemson’s team next fall will be
as strong as this years squad, if not
stronger. We have not decided upon
a coach as yet, but we will get a
good one and In addition we have
most of the fine points of the Heisman
system well in hand now and can also
use many of them. We may adopt
the graduate system of coaching.”
A schedule will be arranged at an
early date which will surely include
Vanderbilt, Sewanee and Cumberland
games.
Vanderbilt in Shape.
Vanderbilt loses Capt. Kyle at quar
ter, Perry at center and probably TS
gert at halfback. Tigert and Perry
may return for post-graduate work, but
the nucleus on hand with the wealth
of fine material left over ar.d due in
from the many prep, teams around
Nashville will give the Commodores
another formidable year. The Blake
brothers, the two crack ends, will
again be on hand. Hamilton, Bryan
and Howell are sure to return with a
majority of the forwards. Coach Henry
will once more train the gold and black
squad and a championship season is
expected.
Sewanee Loae* Phillips.
Sewanee loses the able services of
the best guard the South has se*xi for
many a day.
Capt. Kirby-Smith has also played
his last game, but when Mickey retires
another member of the famous Kirby-
Smith family will be on hand to keep
up the family name in Sewanee ath
letics. Ed, the youngest brother of the
lot. played a brilliant game against
Vanderbilt at fullback and as he has
still three more years, will be a
worthy successor to the family lau
rels.
Kirby-Smith to Sewanee has the same
significance as the name ef Poe to
Princeton. There have been Kirby-
Smiths on the Sewanee team since 1893
and the end is not yet in sight
Camberlaari ia Great *ha.pe.
The Cumberland eleven next season
will probably be the finest eleven the
South has ever seen. Seven of this
year’s great team are freshmen and
will be on hand for three more years’
of service, while only two men w-.1l
graduate. With the two Bridges back.
Red Smith. Mintern. Anderson. Head
and others. Cumberland should send a

game as anyone who has ever wtt-

look out for Cumberland next fail.
Prof. P-.ggs yesterday paid Cumber
land the following tribute.
'•Cumberland has the most powerful
football team I ever saw in the South
ami the best marenal a Southern, team
ever had. They are big and strong.
