2 NEWS OF A DAY IN GEORGIA’S CAPITAL MILITARY WAS HARD HIT IK RECOMMENDATIONS MADE BA' INSPECTORS. Stvernl ( ompit.iie* on Probation anil Other* to Be m.l.andrd Chatham Artillery of Savannah I* tilven In. til May 1 to Make a Better Show ins—-Other Command* Atfeeted. Two Fatal Accident* In AVhleh Train* Claimed Victim*. Atlanta, March 31.—As th result of the recent military inspections by Col. W. G. Obear, inspector general of state troops, and Maj. F. H. French of the Sixteenth United States Infantry, several Georgia companies have been put on probation and the disbandment of others has been recommended. Among those put on the probation list, is the Chatham Artillery of Sa vannah, which is given until May 1 to make a showing. The reason for the putting of this command on probation is that its enlisted strength has been allowed to fall below that required. Company C of the First Infantry at Swainsboro, commanded by Capt. C. H. Thompson, has also been put on probation. Col. Obear has recommended the dis bandment of Company B, Third In fantry, Augusta, commanded by Sec ond Lieut. C. B. Sledge. He has also recommended the disbandment of Company C, First Battalion Colored Infantry, and the Georgia Artillery, also a colored organization, both of Savannah. Col. Obear and Maj. French will complete their inspection of state troops on April 29. Strickland and Turner. Judson M. Strickland of Griffin, who Is a candidate for Prison Commissioner against Chairman J. S. Turner, called on Chairman Turner at the office of the Prison Commission to-day. So far as could be seen, there was no partic \r.r object in the visit, outside of a aesire to indulge in a little pleasant conversation about the race and other matters. There does not seem to be any personal feeling between the chair man and his opponent. Mr. Strickland emphatically denied the report that he contemplated quitting the race. Dwarf Darnell Killed. Francis M. Darnell, Atlanta's fa mous dwarf, was struck and run over by a switch engine of the Atlanta and West Point Railroad in the yards at Badger street crossing this morning, and instantly killed. The body of the dwarf was horribly mangled, being de capitated, and both legs were cut off. Darnell was 71 years old. only three feet six inches high, and wore a heavy gray beard, giving him quite a patri archal appearance. He made a living for himself and his wife by selling papers on the streets, where he has long been a familiar figure. Child Killed by n Train. Guy Barnes, the 2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Barnes, was struck by the fast mail train on the Georgia Railroad near his parents' home at East Decatur, yesterday afternoon and Instantly killed. His mother is In a critical condition as the result of the shock. Going* Wants to Get Ont. Timothy Goings of Floyd county, a convict at the Chattahoochee brick yards, has applied to Judge J. H.
