Which depressed stocks yesterday were
still in force to-day and were effective
during the early past of the Stock
Exchange session, but they did not
prevent an • effective rally in the lat
ter part of the day.
An element in the rally was the
buying to cover by professional op
erators who were disappointed that
the adverse factors in the outlook
had not induced others than them
selves to sell stocks. Also the buy
ing to support the market was at
tributed to influential and powerful
sources, which had the effect of dis
couraging professional attack upon
prices.
.Southern Pnclfle Led Rally.
The buying in Southern Pacific was
deemed especially imposing and this
stock led the rally as it did yester
day. The approach of the hour of
adjournment of the wheat market was
the period of most effeotive recov
ery in stocks, indicating the feeling

The alleged cut in" the price of
steel billets and the probable conse
quence to -the continuance of the pool
continued under active discussion and
induced the early decline In United
States Steel preferred. The episode
is under suspicion of a speculative
motive and the personalities associated
with it made the professional element
wary of it, mindful of 'the experiences
of the past. United States Steel pre
ferred, in fact, turned strong in the
late dealings and was one of the lead
ers of the recovery.
Metropolitan Very Active.
Metropolitan Street Railway was the
most active stock on the list and its
successive flights to higher price lev
els were regarded as corroborative of
the persistent rumors of an amal
gamation with the Interborough Rapid
Transit. The rise in the stock, which
extended to 4 points, was a sustaining
influence on the Whole list. The mar
ket closed very steady and practi
cally at it'h* top level.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales,
par value. 32,245.000. United States
bonds were unchanged on call.
Total sales of stocks to-day were
323.200 shares, including Atehison, 8,-
600; Chesapeake and Ohio, 600; St.
Paul. 13,300; Louisville and Nashville,
1.400; Metropolitan Securities, 8,500;
Metropolitan Street, 55,500; Norfolk
and Western, 200; Pennsylvania, 15.-
100; Reading, 7,400; Southern Pacific.

for October Election.
Waycross, Ga., Aug. 9.—There will
probably be four candidates for Judge
of the City Court of Wayeroae at the
October election. It is understood that
J. C. Reynolds,' the present incumbent,
will be a candidate for re-election, and
John T. Myers, S. W, Hitch and A. E.
Cochran, have heen spoken of as prob
able candidates. The hill recently pass
ed by the Legislature making the
judge and solicitor of the City Court
elective by the, people, has not yet been
signed by the'Govemor, and this step
is awaited before any formal announce,
ments will be made.. J. Walter Ben
nett. the present solicitor, will in all
probability, have no opposition.
A Columbia Boarding Hoaaa Fire.
Columbia, S. fc., Aug. 9.—Responding
to an alarm at 9 o’clock last night the
Columbia fire department found three
separate fires burning in the parlor,
hall and a bedroom of a large frame
dwelling on Plain street, occupied by
Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Westcott, who have
eight boarders. The tires were extin
guished with a loss of 3400. None of
the Inmates were at home. How the
three distinct fires should have fltart
ed simultaneously Is a mystery.
Rafting on the Natilla-
Waycross, Ga., Aug 9.—For the first
time since midwinter the Batilla river
near here is high enough for rafting,
and during the week many rafts will
be carried down to the sawmills on
the lower part of the river.
The logmen hav been cutting tim
ber all during the spring nd summer
months, and hundreds of thousands of
feet will be carried down the river
within the next few days.
