MASONIC HOMEBUILDING
TROUBLE ADJUSTED.
New Contract Awarded and the
Home to Be Completed at Once.
Macon, Aug. 9.—Mainly for the pur
pose of bringing about an adjustment
of differences which have ex
isted between the contractors of
the new Masonic Home and
the architects, who have charge
of the work, and who drew the plans,
a meeting of the board of trustees
was held in Macon yesterday, at which
the following gentlemen were present:
Grand Master Max Meyerhardt, of
Rome; Deputy Grand Master T. H.
Jeffries. Atlanta; Senior Grand War
den Henry Banks, LaGrange; J. C.
Greenfield, Atlanta; Col. Y. A.
Wright. Jackson; Past Grand Master,
Dr. J. W. Taylor, Luthersville; Past
Grand Master W. A. Davis, Macon;
S. E. Betry, Dalton; and J. L. Mack,
Macon.
After a lengthy session the trustees
were able to get together on a plan
for a settlement, which it is said will
(be satisfactory to all parties con
cerned.
It is said that the trouble arose
from the fact that the contractors un
dertook the job of building the home
too cheap, and that after they had
done considerable work discovered that
they would not be able to fulfill the
contract and keep their heads above
the water. At the same time the con
tractors, J. M. Baggett & Cos., were
under bond to the Architects J. W.
Goluke & Cos., to erect the home ac
cording to specifications. A law suit,
|t Is said!, was threatened at this
point, but the local members of the
board of trustees, Chairman W. A.
Davis, Hon. Washington Dessau, and
J. L. Mack advised that there should
be held a meeting of the board of
trustees in the interest of an adjust
ment.
The completion of the contract has
been awarded to Jones Bros, of Ma
con. The agreement, which consti
tuted the adjustment provided that
the contractors pay over SSOO and that
all other claims by either parties be
cancelled. It is now thought that the
new home will have been completed
and that it will be ready to be turn
ed over to the board of trustees with
in two weeks.
The board visited the home and
it is said is well pleased with- the
work. As soon as the building is com
pleted the next task will be its equip
ment and furnishing. With this in
view Capt. W. A. Davis, and J. L.
Mack were appointed to act with the
grand master in securing waterworks
for the home. The choosing of a
superintendent was also discussed, but
the appointment was deferred until a
later date.
In addition to the members of the
board, there were present several visit
ing Masons among whom were: A.
L. Bartlett, J. C. Clemons, F. T.
Davie, T. D. Walker, G. T. Neal,
and Washington Dessau.
The home is on a beautiful site near
Macon, donated by Senator A. O.
Bacon. When completed it is estimat
ed that the structure will cost $22,-
250 and it is expected that it will be
an institution of which the Masonic
fraternity of the state will be justly
proud.
