SCHOONERS FAST
OFF HATTERAS
ACCELERATED GULF STREAM
makes it almost impossible to
ROUND CAPE SOUTHWARD.
Conditions Are Result of High
Winds. Blowing Head-on to Sonito
Bonml Vessels—North Bound Ves
sels Making Record Runs—Carib
II Reported as Finishing Phe
nomenal Run—Mr. Ralph Meldrlm
Compelled to Give lip Water Trip
to Savannah and Returned toy
Rail.
None of the smaller sailing vessels
from the North are coming into Sa
vannah at present and the dispatches
state that there are nearly a hundred
schooners and other vessels of a sim
ilar nature held up off Cape Hatteras.
The trouble, sea captains say,
Is caused by southwest and
southerly winds, blowing head-on
to south-bound boats. The winds have
the effect of accelerating the Gulf
stream. The result is that north
bound vessels are driven faster along
their course, while vessels bound In
the opposite direction are retarded and
many held up completely.
The greatest difficulty seems to be
just off Cape Hatteras. The winds
at this point are always stronger, un
der ordinary conditions, than at any
other point along the coast. Vessel
after vessel is being held at that point,
unable to proceed on their journey
in the face of the strong winds and
the consequent currents.
Fast Time Northward,
The captain of the Carib 11 has
reached New York after making the
trip from Porto Gortez, Honduras, a
distance of 2,100 miles, at the rate of 175
knots a day. The Carib 11 is a three
masted schooner and that it could
make this long journey at such a rate
clearly shows the strength of the ac
celerated Gulf stream.
In explaining the causes which en
abled the journey to be made at such
a rapid rate the captain of the schoon
er said, in an interview published in
New York, “'Persistent south
west and southerly .breezes drove her
along, making an accelerated Gulf
Stream, faster, iban the normal by
one and a half ti>* two knots an hour.
This accelerated stream has been run
ning for almost two months, making
it almost impossible for schooners to
get south of Hatteras.”
Gave Ip His Journey.
Mr. Ralph Meldrim, son of Col. P.
“VV. Meldrim, started some time ago to
make the journey to Savannah on a
schooner. At Hatteras the vessel was
held up and after waiting for two
weeks in the hope that the cape could
be rounded, the. schooner put back to
Cape Henry and Mr. Meldrim came
to Savannah by rail.
In speaking of conditions off Hat
teras he said:
‘‘There was nothing really phenome
nal about the holding up of the vessels
at Hatteras, save that the winds which
caused the counter currents lasted
longer than usual. When we reached
Haitteras there were twentv-flve or
thirty vessels held up there, and be
fore we left this number had been
greatly Increased. More vessels ar
rived daily and were compelled to stop.
“We waited there for two weeks and
then, provisions getting low, we put
back to Cape Henry to take on board
anew stock. My time was getting
short arid I decided that It would be
best to come back by rail and so left
the boat. I enjoyed the outing im
mensely, despite the two-weeks hold
up.
PEACHES IN' BARNESVIL.LE SECTION
Growers Have Made JfIfMVOOO to
on This Season 1 ! Crop.
Barnesville, Ga„ Aug. 11.—The suc
cess with which the fruit growers of
this section have met this season has
given great impetus to the business,
and it is said that something like 100,-
000 young trees have been sold by nur
serymen to be put out next November
and December. This additional number
of trees will make 300,000 or 400,000 in
this immediate section.
The growers at Barnesville shipped
this season about 100 cars of peaches,
while those at Goggins and other
smaller places in the vicinity shipped
at least half as many. The peach crop
has amounted to SIOO,OOO or maybe
$150,000, which means a great deal to
the business interests of the commu
nity, coming as It does in otherwise the
very dullest time of the year.
Nearly 300 people have been given
employment in the orchards and at
the cannery and the money turned
loose has helped everybody and every
business.
It is estimated that V. O. Marsh
burn, the pioneer in the peach indus
try here, cleared $12,000 or more from
this year’s crop, while Stafford &
Howard have cleared about SIO,OOO.
other smaller growers have done as
well in proportion. This has encour
aged quite a number of people, who are
not able to put out large orchards, to
go into the business on a smaller scale,
L'P” thpse will put out something like
st>oo trees. It is not believed here
' bat the markets of the country will
fver be glutted by the Elberta paaches
grown in this section.

MUNGEN WAS HANGED.
i —— ““ ——
Re Had Also Murdered a Woman in
Jacksonville.
Johnstown, Pa., Aug. 11.—Willie Mun
gen, alias Frank Davis, colored, was
hanged at Ebensburg at 1:30 o'clock
this afternoon for the murder of L’aura
Davis. This was the first execution
in Cambria county for nearly thirty
years. Mungen slashed the woman's
throat with a razor and then turned
the blade on himself. When the of
ficers arrived, the woman was dead,
and Davis, gasping for breath, was
lying across a bed. He was removed
to a hospital, where he soon recover
ed.
From the time of his arrest, until
the latter part of May of the present
ye*ar, the murderer insisted that the
woman had attempted to kill him
while he was sleeping and had then
killed herself. The trial was marked
by a dramatic protest of innocence on
the part of the prisoner, who took the
stand in his own defence, but the
jury brought in a verdict of guilty of
murder in the first degree after about
fifteen minutes deliberation.
Shortly after sentence had been pass
ed upon him, Davis professed religion,
and afterward made two confessions—
the first, that he had committed the
deed for which he was hanged, and
also that he had, a number of ye’ars
ago, murdered a woman with whom
he was living in Jacksonville, Fla.,
by choking her to death. In Jackson
ville he was known as Willie Mungen,
which, it has been ascertained, w*as his
real name. The circumstances of the
first murder were corroborated by com
munication with the Jacksonville au
thorities, who had made a vigorous
effort to bring him to justice.
M’GOWAN BOUND OVER.
On Charge of Misappropriating
Funds at Oltoopee.
Augusta, Aug. 11.—Bailey M. Mc-
Gowan, former assistant postmaster
of Ohoopee, Tattnall county, was giv
en a preliminary hearing this after
noon by the deputy United States
clerk here for fraudulently misappro
priating postoffice funds.
McGowan was left in charge of the
office during the absence of Postmas
ter Bowman and went on a spree.
When the postmaster returned he re
fused to turn over the keys, and it
was found that part of the office funds
were missing.
McGowan was bound over for trial
and will be sent to the authorities in
Savannah.
MORGAN WAS CAPTURED.

last night by Sheriff Johns. He was
brought to Starke to-day and tried be
fore Judge Gardner and remanded to
