One Point Gave Keynote to Mar
ket's Tone—Fall of Metropolitan
Traction Reinforced Tendency to
n Slump—Atchison Only One of
Grangers to Show Any Strenglh.
Effort to Knlly Market With
Roost for Southern Pneitic Prov
ed Unsuccessful—Bonds Were Ir
regular.
New York, Aug. 12.—There was '4
partial decrease in the speculative
movement to-day and a gradual
shrinkage in the volume of the deal
ings. The news of the day offered
no clear explanation of the hesitation
in the m'arket, but the disposition was
general to take profits on recent con
siderable advances.
Union Pacific’s opening decline of 1
point was effective notice of this ten
dency.' and the drop in Southern Pa
cific and the fall in the Metropolitan
Tractions reinforced it. Efforts were
made to divert speculative interest to
new quarters, and there were occa
sional advances here and there of a
point or more, but the movement lack
ed enthusiasm and was not convinc
ing to sentiment.
Reading Given n Roost.
Reading was chosen for an advance
of a point notwithstanding reports in
circulation that large curtailment of
anthracite production. The strength
of Amalgamated Copper resulted in
a revival of the repeated rumors df a
settlement of the contentions of cop
per interests. Atchison was the only
one of the Grangers to show a de
gree of strength, and its rise abov.e
80 was attributed more to corn pros
pects than to wheat.
U. S. Steel preferred was held for
only a brief time above last night's
level, and showed the effect of the In
sistent rumors of cuts in the prices of
steel products. An effort was made to
rallv the late market by marking up
Southern Pacific to 5514, hut that stock
fell back when the Metropolifan
Tractions showed a renewed weakness
and the closing was dull and easy.
