New York, Aug. 27. —There 1s little
to he said for to-day's stock market.
Trading during the greater part of the
brief session was very dull and narrow
and the tone was rather irregular.
London sent lower priees, and renewed
activity in the commodity markets
probably accounted for the attitude of
the trading element.
A private estimate that the wheat
crop is likely to fall 250,000,000 bushels
below that of 1901 and very much be
low that of last year, commanded se
rious attention in many quarters.
Rumors of Rate War.
The monotony of the day was enliv
ened by gossip that Union Pacific and
Missouri Pacific were to engage in
rate cutting for Stee! products; also of
a reported fight between the United
Ptates Steel Corporation and the Col
orado Fuel and Iron Company.
Rumors of the strike on the local
elevated lines were authoritatively de-

at the opening in St. Paul, Union Pa
cific, Atchison and Norfolk and West
ern. The half point break In Canadian
Pacific was natural In view of the pro
posed stock increase.
The list steadied somewhat after the
early reaction under the lead of St.
Paul, which was taken In large
amounts. Reading also came in for
some attention. Trading became
rather animated in the final dealings,
practically all the active list sharing in
the upward movement.
Market flospd Firm.
The market closed firm with prices
in some instances better than the pre
vious day's close. St. Paul made a net
gain of 1% and Reading 1%. Total sales
of bonds, par value, were $1,270,000.

Pacific, 5,300; Norfolk and Western, 4,-

DRINKING CREEK WATER.
Columbia* People Are Si ill Having
Great Trouble.
Columbus, Ga., Aug. 27.—After sev
eral weeks unpleasant experience with
river water, Columbus people are now
drinking creek water again. Asa re
sult of heavy rains the reservoirs of
the Columbus Waterworks Company,
In Alabama are overflowing, and there
is running into them twice as much
water as is consumed by the city.
Receiver Greene to-day cut oft the river
water and turned on the reservoir
water again.
The Georgia Industrial Home.
Macon, Aug. 27.—As the result Of a
meeting of the board of directors of
the Georgia Industrial Home, President
E. J. Willingham of that Institution
has made the announcement that the
organization of the Ladies' Auxiliary
is now complete. He gave the follow
ing names of Macon ladles who will
constitute the auxiliary: Chairman.
Miss Kate Ayers. Mrs. S. C. Moore,
Mrs. Flew Holt, Miss Kate Mumford
and Mrs. Edgar 8. Wilson.
It was also announced by President
Willingham that in the place of Supt.
Bofiford, who had resigned his posl
tion as superintendent of the home,
Mr. W. B. Emerson, a well known
Macon man, had been appointed, while
Miss Emerson, daughter of the newly
elected superintendent, will be principal
of the school at the home.
