Steel and Iron Trade—Bond* Ac
tive and Firm.
New York, Sept. 9.—Reading held the
tenter of the Stock Exchange stage to
day, and its violent movement was the
ominant influence on the whole mar
ket.
When it broke to more than a point
, nder last night after the market had
, pened strong, it was concluded that
important speculative interests were
y. tting out of the market, and the trad
,rs rushed to follow the movement.
Inion Pacific also got a point under
, t night, and the Pacifies continued
i > be affected by profit-taking all day.
When Reading made its violent re
hound the traders concluded that the
.ally selling had been on the short
side rather than liquidation.
Reel's New Record.
United States Steel preferred was un
usually sluggish during the greater
part of the day, but it was suddenly
brought into the advance and lifted to
anew high figure on the movement.
The Pennsylvania group and the hard
and soft coalers, generally were bene
fited in sympathy, owing to the ad
vantage to them of the revival in the
iron and steel trade. The late upward
movement in sympathy with United
States Steel preferred made the closing
strong.
Bonds were active and firm. Total
sales, par value, $6,210,000. United
States were unchanged on call.

ROUNDABOUT ~
IN GEORGIA
BATTLE AT BULL RUN.
Macon Telegraph: The “Little Boy
Blues” and the “Buster Browns" are
having a rip-roaring old mimic war
at Manassas, and as heretofore the
“Blues” are finding the old field a
hard proposition.
PIKE COUNTY’S RATE.
The commissioners of Pike county
have fixed the tax rate at $4.20 per
thousand, making the state and county
tax $9 per thousand.
ROOSEVELT’S SILENCE.
Albany Herald; The oyster is open
ing up, but the Strenuous One of Oys
ter bay is emulating the clam In con
cealing his interior views.
STATESBORO INVESTIGATION.
Quitman Advertiser; The Investi
gating committee of the Statesboro
horror has completed its work and
when they are paid off that will be
about the last of the whole business.
Let everybody "try and forget.”
DEATH FROM AN ACCIDENT.
Clyde Dees, the sixteen-year-old son
of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Dees, died
at Mayo, from the effects of an acci
dent which occurred about three weeks
'ago. He was about a half mile from
town near the railroad, when a
freight train passed, and decided that
he would get on and ride to town.
When he caught hold of the guard rail,
his foot slipped and he was thrown
under the train, the wheels running
over and crushing his leg and foot.
He was carried home as soon as pos
sible and the leg amputated. With
4he best of nursing and medical .l
tejitlon, he gradually grew weaker un
til he died.
NEGROES TAKEN TO JACKSON
VILLE.
The self-confessed murderer of Hon.
N. W. Epps and his alleged partners
in the horrible crime are incarcerated
In the Duval county jail. These ne
groes were taken to Jacksonville be
cause it was feared that Live Oak
was not a saje place to keep them,
as threats of lynching them were heard
all over Suwannee county. Isom Ed
wards, the negro who told the officers
of Leon county that he killed Mr.
Epps, impHoated George Cardwell and
Nelson Locken, two other negroes.
All three of the prisoners were taken
to Jacksonville by Sheriff Charles Hop
kins. It is believed that the negroes
will remain in jail at Jacksonville un
til a day la set for their trial in Leor.
county. It Is probable that a special
term of the Circuit Court will be held
In Tallahassee to try ths cases.
