of a prominent Augusta family, now
serving a five-year term in the peni
tentiary will be pardoned If petitions
sent from Amerieus are effective.
Under an assumed name the Augus
tan was sentenced In an Amerieus
court for burglary nearly two years
ago- By the irony of fate he was as
signed to the camp near Augusta,
where members of his family have just
discovered him, having never heard of
his incarceration.
Rev. M. J. Kreps, a prominent Au
fusta clergyman. Is in Amerieus to
ay securing letters recommending the
convict's pardon, as there are miti
gating circumstances. The prisoner
was convicted under the assumed
name of Lefye, his real name being
Magrath.

ing sentences on the chalngang of
said county, and for all convicts who
may be sentenced to work on the pub
lic works or chalngang of said coun
ty within twelve months front Nov. i,
1904, to be leased for a term of twelve
months from Nov. 10, 1904. All bids
must be sealed and filed with the
clerk of said board by 11 o’clock a.
m. Nov. 1, J 904. The lessee or lessees
shall bear all expenses of transporta
tion of such convicts to and from
Brunswick. The lessee or lessees shall
be required to pay all expenses of
maintenance, Including guards and
food and clothing. The hire of such
convicts shall be paid monthly, and
the lessee or lessees shall give such
e-ssurance of payment as may be re
eutred by this hoard, and shall also
give bond for the faithful compliance
with all provisions of law relating to
the hiring and working of such con
vict*. The right Is reserved to reject
any and all bids.

Arthur, founder of the Gainesville fire
department and ever since its organi
zation its chief, for many years a mem.
ber of the City Council, for twenty
years one of Gainesville’s most wide
awake and energetic citizens, 'is held,
the Gainesville Board of Trade held a
meeting yesterday, and resolutions
were unanimously adopted regretting
Mr. McArthur’s resignation of the of
fice, and his removal to Savannah.
“On account of the splendid public
services of Mr. McArthur as an of
ficial of the city of Gainesville, the
careful and efficient manner In which
he has built up the fire department
to its present high standard of excel
lence, resulting In a reduction of In
surance rates, and Increased security
to life and property; and the further
fact that he has ever been ready to
lend aid In furtherance of any enter
prise, public or private, which had for
Its foundation the advancement of
Gainesville, we feel that there should
be some public expression," the reso
lutions read, “of the city’s gratitude
and the esteem In which he is held by
Its citizens.’’

will be reopened on Monday. Oct. 3.
Cards of admission to the white
schools will be issued at Chatham
Academy Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, between
the hours of 9 and 1 o’clock.
Pupils who were in school at the
close In June, whether promoted or
not, will need no cards. Pupils who
attended school out of their district
last year must report to the school in
their own district as they have al
ready been transferred, and such pu
pils will need no cards of transfer.
Pupils who have moved into anew
district since July 1, however, must
obtain transfer cards before Sept. 30,
Cards of admission to the East Broad
and the West Broad Street Colored
Schools will be Issued at these
schools on Friday, Sept. 30. and cards
to the Maple and Duffy Street Colored
Schools will be issued at these schools
on Saturday, Oct. 1.
All pupils must be vaccinated.

partment, Savannah, Ga., Sept. 28,
1904. —Notice is hereby given to the
owners of all buildings in the city of
Savannah three stories or more in
height, not including basfmetßs, used
as a factory, workshop, lodge room,
hotel, department store, boarding
house, public hall or sleeping place
or apartment, to provide suitable and
substantial fire escapes constructed
and erected In accordance with an
ordinance passed by City Council
Aug. 17, 1904. All such fire escapes
must be approved by the Board of
Fire Escapes, and the Board of Fire
Escapes shall determine the number
and location of all such fire escapes.
In accordance with section 85 of
the above mentioned ordinance the
owners of all buildings coming under
the requirements of the ordinance of
August 17, 1904, must provide and
erect on such buildings, within four
months after this date, such fire es
capes as are required.
