New York, Oct. 20.—The reaction in
stocks went further to-day, but the
market gave proof of the wardship of
powerful supporters and the weakness
was at no time acute.
Vigorous supporting measures were
adopted at the opening against the
early flood of profit taking which was
brought in over night by yesterday's
sharp break in prices. The reaction
then seemingly allowed to take its
course for a time and when the sell
ing had exhausted part of its force
another movement towards recovery
developed.
News bearing on values played little
part in the movement. The determined
liquidation in United States Steel
stocks had as much effect on senti
ment as anything else.
To Shuke Oft' Weak Followers.
The complacency with which the re
action was generally regarded was
due to the supposition that the great
financial forces which have been ac
tive in the market favored reaction in
order to shake off weak followers and
give opportunity for themselves to
secure stocks at a lower level which
had been sold at a profit.
The special movements of the day
were in the local tractions including

curb, and in Ontario and Western,
the movement in the former was in
connection wtih revived rumors of a
comprehensive merger in the local
tractmn field. The report of a purchase
of Ontario and Western in the inter
est of the New Haven, which was of
ficially denied yesterday, was revived
to-day.
Amalgamated Copper weakened in
the anticipation of only the regular
dividend being declared and rallied
on the actual declaration. St. Paul
and Atchison offered relatively good
resistance to depression and Chicago
ureat W estern made a show of
strength.
°* 4 W. Supported Market.
The furious buying of Ontario and
tv estern at the last held the market
firm at the rally to the closing. The
day’s net changes in consequence are
very small and show mixed gains
and losses.

There wss undoubtedly more opposi

among the clergy, as a body; and far
more oerloue than either, thirty or for

which wae encountered from the wives

Insurance man said, "Twenty-five
years ago, there wasn’t a week that I
didn't fall with somebody because of
one of these Ignorant prejudices.” The
fact is that comparatively few people,
a quarter century ago, knew what life
Insurance was.
But tt would be difficult to-day to
find any respectable citizen who had
not been "tackled." There Is a wom

added three children at once to her
family; she Is selling photographs of
these triple blessings and using the
proceeds to Insure the youngsters'
lives! The rich man takes out policies
for great sums. Mr. John Wanatnaker

signal for a general holiday-making
mid feasting; nobles were sent to the
jungle to guard It, and ropes of silk
wore considered the only suitable
tether for an animal entitled to such
deferential treatment.
When My Lord the Elephant had
rested at the end of his silken tether
sufficiently to have become reconciled
to his encompassed condition and re
spectful man, he was taksn In much
glory to Bangkok, where, after being
paraded and saluted, he was lodged In
a specially prepared palace; he was
sung to and danced before, given ex
alted titles, shaded by golden umbrel
las and decorated with trappings of
great value. In fact the white ele
phant was once made a great deal of.
but nsver really worshipped, as some
writers have declared. It Is still very
highly prised by the king because of
its rarety, and though capture is
unusual enough to create excitement,
yet popular rejoicing and honors for
the oatcher do not nowadays attend the
event.
But the white elephants continue to
stand unemployed In the royal stables
at Bangkok, where western Ideas are
becoming evident In electric lighting
and trolley cars. There were four In
the royal stables at the tbnc of iny
visit, leading lives of luxurious ease.
The real local consequence of the white
elephant rest In It being to Slain what
the eagle It to America, the lion to
Kngland- -the national emblem. On a
soarlet background it forma the Si
amese Imperial flag, and gives name to
one of the highest orders of merit In
the gift of the king.

of this proposition Is also trua.—Lifa.
