STOCKS MADE RALLY
r RAD WO w NEW YORK MARKET
LARUE AND ANIMATED.
all important stocks
t A ME IN FOR THEIR SHARE IM
THE GENERAL ADVANCE.
Room Traders Very Bold and Dealt
In Practically Unlimited Amonnts
of the Violently Active Stocks—
One Bid Made for Any Part of 50-,
000 Shares of Pennsylvania—Profit
Taking; In Late Honr Very Heavy.
Sevr York, Oct. 21.—There was a re
vival of speculative excitement in
stocks to-day. There was some un
certainty in the early market as to
whether the mid-week reaction had
been decisively checked by yesterday's
late rally, but as soon as this was
seen to be the case the trading broke
into great animation.
The rise was uneven, one point and
then another being effected, but in the
course of the day’s very large dealings
practically all the important stocks
came in for their share of the advance.
The tide of the market was so strong
that room traders became very bold
In their operations and dealt in prac
tically unlimited amounts of the vio
lently active stocks.
Spurt in Pennsylvania.
The dimensions of such operations is
Indicated by the bid made during the
spurt in Pennsylvania for any part of
60,000 shares at 137*4. The jump in
the loeal tractions was extended and
■ deal” rumors regarding that group
were the influence in spite of official
denials of any merger. The renewed
advance in Union Pacific after a pe
riod of hesitation had as a more sub
stantial basis the consideration of the
details of the annual report which was
regarded as testifying to the extraor
dinary prosperity and strength of that
system.
These special movements had a far
teaching sympathetic effect through
the list. The United States Steel stocks
shaved at one time In the day’s upward
movement, but they were late in get
ting started and did mot hold well.
Heavy Profit Taking.
The great volume of the room trad
ing made the profit-taking in the last
hour quite heavy. The result was an
irregular movement during the final
hour, and a considerable curtailment
of best prices, the leading Western
snicks losing practically all of their
gains. The closing, however, was
about steady.
Hoods were firm. Total sales, par
'nine. $0,705,000. United States bonds
"ere unchanged on call.

BRADSTREETS*
WEEKLY REPORT.
New York. Oct. 21.—Bradstreet's to
morrow will say:
Good feeling, Ir. some instances
closely approaching optimism, domi
nates the general trade situation, but
the undertone, is withal one of con
servatism, and there is a general de
sire lo avoid over trading. Past re
ports of good wholesale trade are re
flected In an Increased speeding of
the wheels of Industry, but except In
portions of the West and Southwest,
where cool weather had helped retail
distribution, and In the South, where
good prices for cotton induce free
marketing of the crop, there Is a dis
position to regard the weather as too
warm for best results In final distri
bution. Railway earnings turned the
corner in August, the roads of the
country showing a gain of a fraction
of 1 per cent, in gross and of 5 per
cent, in net over 1903. Collections
have continued to hold the improve
ment noted last week, being especially
good at the South.
Business failures for the week end
ing Oct. 20 number 227 against 216 In
the like week in 1903.
