Gainesville, Fla., Oct. 21.—Fletcher

in this city for the last few days on
the charge of killing Garrett V.
Chamberlain from ambush, near Kirk
wood, last Friday, to-day made a full
confession of the crime.
He stated that he had been working
for Chamberlain, but on the, day of
the killing was discharged. Chamber
lain telling him to get off the place
or he would kill him.
"I went to A. G. Lamb’s
store," the negro stated, "and
told Mr. Lamb. He gave me a
32-caliber Winchester rifle and
told me to kill Chamberlain, or he
would kill me. I took the gun and
started for the lake to shoot a crane.
On the way 1 saw Chamberlain com

tces.
"The deg pointed me and Chamber

"He replied, ‘Good thing. He would
have killed you. You did it in self
defense and the law will protect you,’
When I shot Chamberlain he turned,
walked away, took off his coat and
fell. I shot three times at Chamber
lain, but not at his wife.”
Lamb is a prominent Micanopy mer

PROSPERITY IN SOUTHWEST
GEORGIA.
Lowndes Connly Farmers Making a
Bale to the Aere.
Valdosta, Ga., Oct. 21.—The records
of the railroads here show the great
est gain in business for the last forty
five days that have ever been recorded,
not only in the large shipments, but
in the smaller business showing the
volume of retail trade. The local pas
senger business of the Atlantic Coast
Line for the first fifteen days of this
month exceeded last year’s for the
same dates by more than S6OO, while
the Georgia Southern's increase was in
similar proportion.
Interviews with fifty farmers show
conditions in the rural communities to
be better than ever before. The farm
ers are making a bale of upland cot
ton to the acre, and about a bale to
an acre and a half of sea islands. They
are making thirty to fifty bushels of
corn to the acre, and have more com
and hay than they can take care of.
They are building pens In the fields
for their corn. .
The yields of potatoes, rice, cane
and all other products have been on
the same phenomenal scale. Many
farmers gathered a bale of cotton to the
acre on the first picking, but little or
none wua left in the field.

FIRE THREATENED
BAINBRIDGE.
Bainbrldge, Ga., Oct. 21.—The resi
dence of Mr. Abe Cohen was burned
this morning, the chimneys only being
left standing. The wind was blowing
a gale, and it was with only the great
est difficulty that the department pre
vented everything in the neighborhood
burning. The large public school
building repeatedly caught afire, but
each time, it was quickly quenched.
The fact that Mr. Cohen’s residence
was almost isolated, is the only thing
that prevented a loss of perhaps $25,000
to $30,000.
