New York, Oct. 25.-Union Pacific
•old as high as 112 to-day and the ag
gregate dealings in that stopk footed
up 360,800 shares. These astonishing
occurrences were the central facts
from which all others radiated, and
there is little left to say of the mar
ket, except in terms of wonder at its
dimensions and its erratic variety. The
final break was from a rush to take
profits on the day's enormous trading,
and on a bear raid.
There has been a larger number of
shares of a single stock dealt in dur
ing one day than there was to-day of
Union Pacific. In fact that stock it
self broke that record on April 24, 1901,
when 662,800 shares were sold on the
stock exchange. The world now knows
that competitive buying in retaliation
for the effort to control Northern Pa
cific was the cause of that tltantic
struggle in the open market.
On April 15, 1902, there were 864,500
shares of Southern Railway dealt in
on the stock exchange, pending the
settlement of control of Louisville and
Nashville in the general interest of
the Southern Railroad field. With
these exceptions, to-day’s dealings in
Union Pacific probably form a record.
Cause of the Movement.
The published assertion that the re
tirement of the Oregon Short Line par
ticipating bonds had been determined
in was the inciting cause of this ex
traordinary movement. The truth of
this report could not be learned from
any official sources. It was assumed,
in spite of emphatic official disclaim
ers, that a settlement of the Northern
Securities dispute, and a community of

The market was subjected to enor
m°i'S throughout the day,
and the result was constant irregular
ity and occasional weakness. The en
gagement of gold for export increased
the burden of selling, but the confi
dence in the market did not seem to
be impaired at once by these develop
ments and ingenuity was taxed to pick
out new points for aggressive buying.
Prices Easily Crumbled.
But when attempts were made to
take profits on the day’s unwieldy com
mitments, the vulnerable position of
the market developed and prices crum
bled rapidly. The day's most consecu
tive gains were wiped out with a rush
and Union Pacific’s net gain proved
small. Losses were the rule, running
to between 1 and 2 points, and even
more in many cases. The closing was
decidedly weak and without recovery.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales,
par value, 811.047,000. United States
bonds were unchanged on call.

PILOTS KBl’T BUSY.
The river and bar pilots have made
anew record since the business sea
son opened.
They have been working night and
day, and their steamer, the J. H.
Estill, has kept at sea without inter
mission, except to come into Tybee
roads to take on pilots, to take the
place of those who have been put
aboard inward bound vessels.
During and since the West India
hurricane that passed up the coast the
sea has been very rough, and pilots
have had to be spry in getting off or
boarding vessels. In going to an in
ward bound steamship Just after mid
night yesterday morning, the steamer
Esitill shipped two heavy seas over her
bow, and in the language of Capt.
Charley Marmelsteln: ‘They were real
green seas, too.”
The Italian steamship Ed. Pamlento,
now in port, is a magnificent ship of 4,-
000 tons, and is one of a line of Italian
emigrant vessels, though on this voy
age she is a freighter.
The steamships that have been com
ing to this port this season are, as a
rule, not the old tramps and iron boxes
with engines in them, but well equip
ped ships with all modern maritime
conveniences.
The British steamship Louisiana,
which sailed from this port for Liv
erpool, made the trip across in four
teen days. The return trip ended yes
terday, when she again entered port,
making the voyage in fifteen days.
This vessel is one of the handsomest
freight steamers in the trade.
One of the big steamships that came
in Thursday, the British steamer Cas
tilla, will have a variegated cargo when
she starts across the Atlantic. She
arrived at Fernandina Thursday a
week ago, and took on 6,000 barrels of
naval stores and sailed on Wednesday
for thie port, where she will take on
8,000 bales of cotton. Leaving here,
she will go to Newport News, Va., and
take about 400 head of cattle, and
thence to Liverpool. The Castilla has
accommodations for twenty-five first
class passengers.
