New York, Oct. 27.-The war scare
paged with great violence in Wall
street for a time to-day and ravaged
the speculative price level to which
the market had been lifted, but be
fore the close of the day quieter coun
sels prevailed and the question began
to be asked whether in the event of
actual hostilities between Russia and
Great Britain, American Investment
properties would be hurt in the pro
portion' indicated by the headlong
plunge of prices during the morning.
The action of the market in com
parison with that of other securities
markets looked as though the damage
from the threatened clash would con
verge on American securities. The in
ference- was plain that a weak tech
nical position made this market acute
ly susceptible to a sudden unfavorable
development.
Rig Decline in Few Minutes.
A decline in a few minutes of 2 to 3
points running generally through the
active list was sufficient to throw out
many {speculative holdings and to ne
cessitate great agility on the part of
holders of very large amounts to pre
vent sacrifice and an increase indefi
nitely of the pressure upon the mar
ket. As it was, the uncovering of stop
loss orders precipitated large specu
lative holdings on the market and

Bulla Regained Control.
The bull control was again asserted
and the market showed the relief af
forded by the shaking out of unwieldy
speculative accounts. United States
Steel preferred rallied poorly and On
tario And Western suffered from an
alleged hitch In the New Haven con
trol movement. The closing tone was
generally firm and active.
Bonds were weak, with some recov
ery. Total sales, par value, $7,395,000.

ON ITS SECOND TRIP.

Among the arrivals at this port yes
terday was the schooner William J.
Quillin, under the command of Capt.
R. F. Quillin, practically a brand new
vessel, as this is its second trip. The
schooner was launched at Bath, Me.,
July 12. Its first trip was made be
tween Femandlna and New York with
lumber. The trip to Savannah was
made with a cargo of fertilizer, con
signed to the Seaboard Cotton Com
pany. When this is discharged the
Quillin will go to Satilla, whence a
cargo of piling will be taken to New
York.
The new vessel is of 696 tons. It is
fitted with every device that can add
to the convenience of handling sails
and anchors and of loading, or add to
the comfort of its crew. Among other
arrangements to this eiul is one for
heating the cabin by means of hot
water pipes. These conveniences are
not confined to the vessel proper, for
even the captain’s launch is fitted with
an engine.
The Quillin left New York Saturday
at noon, and reached, Tybee fear yes
terday at 9 o’clock a. m. Capt. Quil
lin is well known here, having made
many trips to this port as captain of
the schooner Edgar C. Ross.
JUDGE PARKER’S CLOTHES.

Judge Parker is the -best dressed
presidential candidate since Chester A.
Arthur’s time. When be comes to
New York on his weekly visits he
brings with him only a small part of
his extensive wardrobe, but that is
enough to show him a man of quiet,
refined taste, who keeps up with the
fashions and wears the best that the
Fifth avenue tailors and haberdashers
provide.
At Uosemount a much wider range
of apparel Is possible than at the Se
ville. There the Judge has suit* for
bathing, riding, driving, farming, In
formal house receptions, negligees,
church formal occasions and evening
dress. All told he has appeared In fif
teen different suits of clothes since his
nomination.
On his visits to New York he brings
only three or four suits. These are
packed in two huge suit cases, which
together hold as much ae a steamer
trunk. Besides them the Judge’s only
baggage is a well-worn leather ha*
box, which he carries himself, and
which contains an extra silk hat.
In all his wearing apparel Judge Par
ker manifests a quiet, subdued taste.
Even his bathing suit, riding clothes
and negligee suits are in quiet color.
Very dark gray, white and black are
the usual combination. This applies
to his cravats and socks, as well as
to his suits and overcoats.
Six Changes A Dsy.
The days he worked on the farm.
Judge Parker dressed six or seven
times; first in his bathing suit, then
a lou.ge suit for breakfast, a change
to his riding clothes for a morning
canter, a change back to the cutaway
or sack suit for luncheon, then to the
farming rig in the latter part of the
afternoon and then another bath' and
his evening dress for dinner.
It is in tils negligee and reoeptton at
tire that the judge has the widest
range. He has worn several suits of
flannels, white or white with a per
pendicular dark stripe, the troueers
turned up at the bottom and brack
patent-leather shoes. Ax a change from
these he has several sack eoate, black
or blue, which he wears with white
duck trousers held in place by a belt,
and negligee shirts of white With a
narrow black or dark blue stripe. With
these he wears bow ties, of which he
has a great variety.

corded black silk four-in-hand or a solf
flowing tie. The four-in-hands ’Are se
cured by a large rough pearl held in
a claw setting.
The Judge has been wearing anew
style of turndown collar, a comprom
ise between the high turndown collars
and the old style.
His frock coats are reserved for cere
monious occasions, like Notification
Day and when the National Committee
calls. He wears a silk-faced coat,
which he keeps partly buttoned when
speaking or shaking hands. His gloves
are dark tan shades, heavy for rid
ing and driving, and lighter In weight
for traveling or w*alking. His silk hats
are always perfect in their gloss.
