N*w York. Oct, 2*.-With the fears
o£ a rupture between Russia uml Great
Britain relieved, stocks scored a sharp
recovery to-day. There was an asscc
tlon of the recovered bull control of
the market, and excursions were made
Into the list to develop new points of
strength.
The efforts met with success. The
striking: feature of the market, how
ever, was the decline in interest at
the higher levels and the lapse into
actual dullness at times. The market
was the smallest of the week. In the
early dealings Union Pacific maintain
ed well its recent prominence in the
market, the impelling factor being the
definite decision on the part of the
Oregon Short Line directors to avail
themselves of the privilege under the
mortgage to retire the participating
bonds at 102'^.
A Settlement Expected.
In spite of all official disclaimers,
the speculative element sees in this a
certain indication that the Northern
Securities settlement is being worked
out to extend the community of inter
est *n the trans-continental railroad
field.
The speculation shifted later to the
coalers and other quarters of the list.
Lackawanna was especially conspicu
ous, soon advancing to new- record lev
els on small transactions, and by
jumps of several points between sales
to 320. The renewed strength of United
States Steel preferred was as effective
as anything in the day's market in re
storing speculative confidence as the
heaviness of the steel securities may
be said almost to have shared with the
war scare as a cause of the week's
break in the market.
The decrease in the foreign tension
afforded some relief here to the ex
change market and no further engage
ments were made of gold for export
to-morrow, as had been anticipated.
The occasional fluctuations of the mar
ket gave way to a recovery in the final
dealings and the closing was firm and
at the best prices generally.

DUN’sIveIkLY review.
New York, Oct. 28.—R. G. Dun's
weekly review of trade to-morrow will
say:
Mild weather early in the week
checked the distribution of seasonable
goods, but had a permanent value In
facilitating the harvesting of cotton
and late grain. Subsequently the tem
perature fell, restoring retail trade in
wearing apparel, fuel and similar pro
ducts to greater activity than wag ex
perienced a year ago. Building oper
ations are active, strengthening t<he
markets for lumber and materials.
Manufacturing plants are making
steady gains, particularly In the lead
ing industries, and it is significant
that reluctance to do business haa
shifted from buyer* to sellers, elim
inating largely the concessions in
prices that prevented stability. La
bor Is unusually well employed. Judg
ing by the official compilation of the
unions. Railway freight blockades
cause some complaint, which Is re
markable, In view of the restricted
grain movement and earning* In the
three weeks of October were 9.2 per
cent, larger than in 1903.
Textile manufacturing returns are
again Irregular, owing to the fact that
expectation* of increased activity In
cotton goods were not realised.
Failures This week numbered 233,
against 263 last year.
