New York. Oot. 29.—With the effec
fchr* clearing up of the threatened In
ternational complications aibroad, the
speculation In Btocks here broke into
renewed animation to-day and the
rise hi prices was renewed with as
much animation and assurance as with
the /tpenlng of the week.
There was no Indication that such a
thing as an Anglo-Russian War had
ever threatened and the final prices
to-day were in some conspicuous cases
the highest of the week and of the
year. The advance was even more
comprehensive and more evenly dis
tributed than in the market of the
early part of the week.
Fight to Determine Tone.
Such weakness as was shown was
due to specific causes, except for the
sudden loss of its gain by St. Paul
in the final dealings, which made the
close slightly irregular and gave the
market an appearance of a contest be
tween contending forces to determine
the closing tone. The determined sup
port of the forces behind the market
generally prevailed, however, and the
closing was very animated.
Of the weak spots in the market
that of Ontario and Western was due
to (the doubt thrown upon the earlier
conviction that equal terms were to
he offered to majority and minority
■holders in the purchase of control.
The break in Metropolitan Street Rail
way and in Metropolitan Securities
was quite clearly a speculation on the
possible future effects of the newty
opened subway on the local transit
traffic. Amalgamated Copper, Sugar,
Union Pacific, Rock Island, Erie and
Southern Railway were conspicuous
features. Total sales of bonds, par
value, $5,275,000.

Say That Prices Now Have Clear
Field for Advancement.
New York, Oct. 29.—The stock mar
ket this week was put through a se
vere test, but ended by showing how
well the leaders had it In hand, and
it only goes to prove what we have
for so long tried to impress on our pa
trons—that it is a genuine bull market.
And now that the war cloud has passed
prices have a clear field for advance
ment. The firing of the Russian fleet
on British fishermen set the whole
world ablaze, and for twenty-four
hours things looked warlike. In any
ordinary market this news would have
caused almost a panic, and many con
servative houses advised their custom
ers to cover long contracts. But the
wise ones of Wall street were better
informed and held prices well tn hand,
so there was an ordinary reaction from
2 to 5 points which was perfectly nat
ural and has left the market in a
much healthier condition. The indus
trials are now to the front. Sugar
has had a phenomenal rise and 150 is
predicted for it in the near future. The
election of Mr. Roosevelt, which seems
assured (as the betting in Wall street
is 6 to 1), means four more years of
undisturbed protection and prosperity
for the trusts. There is no use to kick
against them? better get in the wagon
and ride with the bunch. Copper Is
booked for 90 before Christmas. The
earnings of this company has showed
marked improvement, and the chances
are they will get back to a 6 per cent,
basis. Ail the rails look good. Rock
Island, Missouri Pacific, Union Pacific
and St. Paul will undoubtedly go much
higher. Look out for the Steel stocks
next week. Mr. Ke>ene is taking care
of the pool in United States Steel for
the Standard Oil people, and these
stocks are liable to have a substantial
advance any day. The traction stocks
do not look well, especially Metropoli
tan. For some reason the pool in this
stock are trying to work prices lower,
probably to accumulate more. There
was no adverse news in it to-day, ex
cept the opening of the subway, and
that should not account for much of
a decline. All of the traction stocks
will undoubtedly be amalgamated, and
then we will see higher prices for them.
Next week should see the continuance
of an advancing market. -As we have
heretofore said, there will be reactions.
But until the entire conditions change
stocks are bound to advance.
