New York Money Market Made no
Notable Reiiionse to Gold Move
ment—More Attention Given to the
Threatened Necessity of With
drawal of Government’s Deposits
from Banks.
New York, Oct. 31.—Confidence in
Higher prices 'has seemed no more
sanguine at any time during the cur
rent speculative campaign than it did
this morning. The sharp declines ot
the day were the greater occasion foi
surprise on this account. The lack of
known new conditions to cause the
decline gave rise to some uneasy con
jectures of possible occult happenings
in the financial world to cause the
free offerings of stocks.
The declines from Saturday’s clos
ing prices offered no very violent con
trast to the break caused by the war
scare in the middle of last week. The
most generally accredited cause for the
selling was the large engagements of
gold for export this week, which
amounted to $5,000,000, all to go to
Paris by Thursday’s steamer.
London was a free seller of securi
ties in this market even while declin
ing prices here offered no advantage
in the usual arbitrage operations. The
money market here made no notable
response to the gold movement, al
though the month-end made some spe
cial demands upon supplies. Rather
more attention was given also to the
prospect for money and the growth in
the rate of the government’s deficit
in the latter part of October which
threatens a necessity for the with
drawal of government deposits from
the banks.

the gold withdrawals was Indicated
by the renewed weakness caused by
the late announcements of additional
engagement. The confidence felt in
the market was shown by the high
opening and the vigor with which the
early profit-taking was absorbed. But
the first hour showed the highest
prices of the day, and the selling was
soon demonstrated to be something
more than the profit-taking on the
Monday morning new demand.
Amalgamated Copper was a feature
in the first advances on account of the
sensational buying demand for the
metal. Sugar rose on the advance in
refined sugars and Tennessee Coal on
the reported large order for steel rails
by the Louisville and Nashville. Penn
sylvania and Baltimore and Ohio
showed temporary strength. But
everything declined in the late deal
ings and the day’s net losses run from
1 to 3 points throughout the list.
The closing was weak and at the
lowest.

Inversely, “I want,” or “not to be
caught,” proves an early stumbling
block. But It Is with the ordinary
slang that It Is proposed to deal.
In the first place, the colonial loves
to drawl, particularly In describing
anything. “Man! It’s such a 1-e-etle
thing,” he will say. Or "Man! we went
r-t-l-ght over there.” He addresses
man, woman or child as "Man,” It may
be observed. Nobody ever steals (un
less the police catch him), he only
"jumps” the article, or, since the war,
•'commandeers" It. As in America, all
shows are "stores," while public houses
become "canteens," ala mllLtalre. Hav
ing entered the canteen, he will have
either a “shandy” of beer and lemon
ade (the staple drink of the cohmlal),
a “long” or a "pony” beer. Should he
go on a spree, he Is only “having a
birthday.” With his “skoft,” or food,
he prefers tea to anything else, the
water being doubtful In most places.
If any one tries to impose on him or
play him a trick he is told to “come
the tin man,” and will be told to
“voetsac" (pronounced “footsack”), a
Dutch epithet applied to dogs when
you want them to get out of the way.
Ne’er-do-wells and cadgers are "stiffs.”
Of course, natives of all ages are
“boys,” the term “coolies” being ap
plied to Indians and Asiatics gener
ally. A female coolie Is Invariably ad
dressed as “Mary” and a male as
“Sammy.”
—Secretary Morton is the crack ten
nis player of the cabinet and one of
the best men with the racket In Wash
ington. The President has formally
challenged him to a series of contests
and the White House tennis court,
which cost *2,000, has been “done over”
for the fall games. New drains have
been put In and the surface made as
smooth as a billiard table.
