IVns Reactionary.
fC w York. Nov. 3.—There was a
notable subsidence of speculative in
terest In the stock market to-day.
There was evidence in the large opera
tions of a few Arms, which are credit
ed with doing the business for some
cf the powerful Interests, that those
interests were still taking a specula
tive part in the transactions. But
their operations were confined to few
er stocks and were on a smaller scale
than from some time past.
The halt in the activity of the
market is generally attributed to a
purpose to await the passing of the
election. Such strength as there was
in to-day's market was largely con
fined to the iron and steel industrials
and bore a close relation to the ad
vices from that trade.
Steel Trade Better.
Informal informations were in cir
culation that the orders received by
the United States Steel Corporation
were in an increasing rate and ap
proaching the limits of productive
capacity. The United States Steel
Stocks were the most active of the
sroup, but some of the partly dor
mant stocks made much better gains,
Tennessee Coal rising more than 3,
and Sloss Sheffield Steel 5 points.

The Pennsylvania group of railroad
stocks showed sympathy with this
strength, as is usually the case, owing
to the large proportion of their traf
fic which is made up of iron and steel
products. The running of the first
cars over the new East River bridge
gave & lift to Brooklyn Transit. Sugar
had the advantage of a further ad
vance in the price of refined sugar.
Market Was Reactionary.
Aside from the strong points men
tioned the market was reactionary,but
the decline was not extreme and ran
to a point in only a handful of leading
stocks. These declines were largely
made up and converted into gains for
a few in the late dealings. The Grang
ers rallied well from their early de
pression on account of some expert
estimates of a heavy corn crop. The
stock market closed irregular and un
decided.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales par
value $6,295,000. United States bonds
were unchanged on call.
