New York, Nov. 9.—The election
stock market resembled the election It
self in the fact that it offered small
held for distinctions and contrasts. The
strengthening became general and
well distributed and the dealings rose
to a larger aggregate than for any
day since panic day of May 9, 1901.
There was a heavy outpouring of
stocks during the first hour by those
who had bought in the past in antici
pation of the enlarged deniand that
would follow the election, and the re
sult was a reaction to Hear Monday’s
closing level. In the last hour, again
there was the usual disposition to real
ize profits on the considerable ad
vances for the day. But these move
ments did not at all obscure the
broadened demand for securities and
the comprehensive strength displayed
by the market.
Diversion of Demand.
The later market showed a notable
diversion of demand to established div
idend payers and to standard railroad
stocks. The United States Steel stocks
were not exempt from this tendency,
and their opening prices proved to be

and strong, but the largest dealings
were in convertible or contingent in
