LAYING PIANS for the
STATE FAIR IN 1905
Atlanta Wants It, and Savannah, Macon and
Valdosta Expected to Put in Bids.
Atlanta, Nov. 9. —With Atlanta al
ready In the running it looks as if
there will be several strong competit
ors for the next State Fair in Isos.
Directors of the State Agricultural So
ciety feel assured that Savannah is go
ing to make a good bid for the fair,
and it is thought also that Macon and
Valdosta will lay claim to it.
Hon. Dudley Hughes of Danville,
Twiggs county, president of the State
Agricultural Society, appears to be
anxious that Atlanta shall have the
next fair. As the result of some cor
respondence between himself and
George W. Parrott of this city a meet
ing of fifty prominent Atlanta business
men was held, and ft committee of
eeven Atlantans will be appointed to
continue the correspondence with Mr.
Hughes.
A * 10,000 I'uihl.
Those who attended the meeting
stated they felt sure that a fund of
SIO,OOO could be raised between now and
February, the time at which the Exec
utive Committee of the State Agricul
tural Society will take up the matter
of locating the next State Fair. An
effort will also be made to secure the

OF THE AMERICAN NAVY
Washington, Nov. 9.—Three battle
ships, live scout cruisers, six torpedo
boat destroyers, six torpedo bouts and
two squadron colliers, at an aggregate
maximum cost of $41,300,000, is the
building programme which the general
board of the navy has recommended
the Secretary of the Navy to urge Con
gress to authorize at its next session.
Secretary Morton will refer the recom
mendations to the board of construc

will base his recommendations to Con

CREATURES THAT LIVE
IN ETERNAL DARKNESS.
ftraiinr Effect* of the Life In the
Habit* of Sneh Crentnre*.
From the St. Louis Olobe-Demoerat.
The cavern beetle was first discover
ed some seventy years ago in an Aus
trian c4ve, the grotto of Adelsberg.
One specimen only was caught, and.
though Its discoverer offered a prize
of £5 for another, It was fourteen
years before a second was found.
The cavern beetle has a little round
body, very long legs, and absolutely no
eyes at all. Brought out from Its
gloomy haunts Into the light of the
sun It dies almost Immediately. Yet
in its pltchdark home far beneath the
surface of the earth It moves with as
great rapidity and certainty aa any of
Its eyed relatives on the upper soil.
To make up for Its lack of sight. It
is provided with antennae of extraor
dinary length and delicacy. By means
of these it feels Its way over the rough
surface of the stone and hunts Its prey
—other smaller blind Insects—with
great rapidity and absolute certainty.
The cavern beetle has Its enemies.
The blothrus (a species of scorpion) and
the great eyeless spider hunt it re
morselessly. Prince Khevenhuller, who
thoroughly explored these caves some
years ago, describes It as t most ex
traordinary sight to watch by ithe
light of a candle a scorpion, absolute
ly eyeless, hunting a beetle equally
bind along the cavern wall. Although
the beetle was several feet In front
of the scorpion, and divided from It by
a fissure In the rock, yet the scorpion
tracked It with absolute and almost
appalling certainty.
The spider found In these caves Is
of a lovely ivory white, and Is able,
like the other insects which inhabit
the same subterranean depths, to run
very rapidly, and find Its wsy with
as positive certainty as If It had eyes
And light to Use them. Like several of
the others, It, too, perishes if taken
oyt of the cave. Sunlight Seems to
wither and shrivel up these Insects,
just as though they had been placed In
front ttf a hot fire.
Yet, In spite of this fact, It Is known
that the blind cave creatures lived In
the light of day.
An extraordinary proof of this la that,
though no rainiest ray marks the dif
ference between day and darkness In
the dopths they live In, yet It has been
ascertained beyond shadow of doubt
that those whose ancestors were noc
tbral In their habits still prefer to movu
about during thoae hours when the tur-

face of the earth is in darknfess.
The cavern rat, found in the Mam
moth cUve of Kentucky, is of a soft,
bluish color, with white heck and feet.
It has enormous eyes, black as night,
but quite unprovided with iris.
These eyes are perfectly insensible to
light, and when the experiment has
been made of catching a cavern rat
and turning it loose in bright sunlight,
it blunders about, striking itself
against everything, is unable to pro
vide Itself with food, and finally falls
down and dies.
In its native depths, however, it is
proposed government appropriation of
SIO,OOO for a cattle exhibit in this sec
tion, to be used in connection with the
next Georgia State Fair.
Those who are familiar with the sit
uation do not believe that SIO,OOO will
get the next State Fair. It is the gen
eral belief that there will he some
stron§; competition and that high fig
ures will be the result.
Shy* Snvnniinh Will Make Good
Oft’er,
“I know that Savannah wants the
llbxt State Fair,” said Hon. Martin V.
Calvin, olie of the Executive Commit
tee, in discussing the matter to-day.
"And I am satisfied, too, that Savan
nah is going to make a good offer for
it.
‘‘l think we are going to require the
competitors for the fair nOxt year,”
Mr. Calvin continued, "to come be
fore the committee prepared to sign
the contraot as soon ns the committee
is ready to award it. And another
thing I am pretty sur e of is that the
State Agricultural Society will want a
little more authority and a little more
to do with the management of the fair
than has been the case heretofore.
Next year's fair is going to be a good
one, \yhoever gets it, for wo are going
to begin to work right now for its suc
cess.”
Homeogeneity is earnestly urged by
the board as the great need of the navy.
The board suggests that the new bat
tleships shall be of the general type of
the Connecticut class. This would give
the navy nine iirSt-class battleships
of 16,000 tons each.
Great speed is urged as the feature
of the five scout cruisers recommended.
The board thinks the six torpedo boat
destroyers and six torpedo boats rec
ommended should have greater size
and seaworthiness than previously
built vessels of their class.
able to lead ia comfortable enough ex
istence, as its enormously long whis
kers are so extremely sensitive that
they enable it to find Its way rapidly
through the darkness. The principle
food of the cavern rat consists of a
kind of large cricket of a pale yellow
color, and, like most cave dwellers, it
self perfectly blind.
Numbers of different kinds of fish
are known to live in the gloomy rivers
and lakes which exist In all large
caves.

a depth of 188 feet a great stream of
water was struck, which shot up at
the rate of 1,200 gallons a minute. With
it came thousands of tiny, shrimp
like oreatures, And also a large num
ber of curious little, pale-colored rep

each having four legs. These tiny mon
sters were absolutely eyeless. The
only trace that they ever possessed
such organ are two little black spots
above the nostrils.
A similar creature known as the olm.
Inhabits the rivers in the Austrian
caves already mentioned. Down in the
depths of the Planina cave, nearly a
mile and a half from the entrance, the
olm is most abundant. The wafers
are fairly alive with them, and when,
some years ago, the Archduke Ferdi
nand paid a visit to this cave, a net
was let down, and a number of the
little reptiles caught for his benefit.
