in the hopeful and cheerful tenor of
, he news and with no abatement of
t he general confidence In general con
ditions, the desire to realize profits so
far overbore the eagerness to secure
new ownership In stocks as to cause a
decidedly irregular tone in to-day’s
sio, k market. The price changes com
pared with last night, offered a very
mixed result at the end of the trad
ing.
The favorite speculative stocks,
which usually lead the whole market
in point of activity, suffered most from
realizing and generally lost ground
during the day. The conspicuous gains
were made by the less prominent rail
road stocks and by many industrials
and specialties, which are rarely heard
of in the market. Such gains were
striking, extending to many points in
some cases, but their effect is never so
reassuring to the general speculative
sentiment as the uplifting demand for
standard stocks.
Sustaining Forces.
The Wabashes, Illinois Central and
Southern Pacific were the most effec
tive sustaining forces in the day’s mar
ket and United States Steel preferred
showed revived strength in the late
market, when the general tendency was
downward. The bank statement showed
a larger decline In cash than was ex
pected, but its effect on the surplus
was modified by the considerable loan
contraction of $14,789,600. Total sales of
bonds, par value, $7,295,000.

banks of this city for the five days of

gal tenders, $76,347,100; decrease, sl,-

Say the Market Has Been Exceed
ingly Strong This Week.
New York, Nov. 12.—The stock mar
ket of this week has been exceedingly
strong and many securities have made
substantial gains. Since the election
the market is in a much safer position,
and until money materially tightens,
which will not be the case for at least
three months, or we have some for
eign complications, which is also a
very remote contingency, prices will
continue to advance. As we have all
along predicted, you can safely buy
stocks at any time. There will be, of
course, reactions and some of them will
look dangerous, but on any concession
we advise purchases. The Steel stock
will probably be advanced again next
week, and until the common reaches
40 and the preferred 100 they can be
safely bought. Among the rails we
think well of Union Pacific, Missouri
Pacific and Rock Island. The Chicago
and Alton, which has of late been
showing very large increased earnings,
but which has been dull for some time,
came to life this morning and started
on one of tihose sensational upturns
that is bo common in this market.
This stock will probably go to 50 next
week. American Car Foundry, which
closed to-day at 30%, in all likelihood
will be advanced sharply. The com
pany is making tremendous profits and
this will be reflected in the price
shortly. It Is one of the few stocks
that as yet has not been pushed for
ward. Look out for It. Atchison Is
one of the safest and best stocks on
the list. Its last statement to the
Stock Exchange shows this road is
making net earnings equal to 12 per
cent, on the common stock. The enor
mous corn crop and the high price of
this cereal aids this road and Missouri
Pacific more than any other of the
grangers. Buy Atchison for par. It is
slow, but sure. As we have said all
along, this stock market Is a real bull
one, and will continue so. All the big
banks and trust companies In New
Y'ctrk are In sympathy with the mar
ket, and until there is undue inflation
will aid It ail they can. It Is not time
yet to kill the goose that lays the
golden egg. It must be remembered
that the earning capacity of the rail
roads is far greater than over before.
They have spent millions in better
ments, and with the general prosperity
of the country and the big crops and
high prices, railroad securities are far
from any Inflated values yet. In the
great bull market of 1901-2 prices went
at least 60 points higher than they are
now, and yet the roads were not as
well fixed as they are to-day. Don’t
be afraid of the market. It is a safe
one yet, and don’t let the reactions
scare you out.
