Severe gales probable."
This is the latest warning sent out
from the central Weather Bureau of
fice at Washington by Dr. Franken
fleld. The conditions prevailing at 8
o'clock last night seemed to more than
justify the warning, though the wind
velocity at Savannah was compara
tively light.
As far as could be gathered from the
reports filed at night from the dif
ferent stations, the center of the storm
is now off at sea, lying almost due
east of Jacksonville. It has moved
with considerable rapidity, and if It
keeps up the present rate of traveling
by this morning it will be nearly as far
north as Wilmington, N. C. As it travels
northward it is increasing in intensity.
Xu Hunger In Savannah.
There Is no danger from the storm
as far as the city is concerned, and
the northeast storm warnings were
hoisted merely as a warning to the
shipping interests. Severe gales are
probable and the exact strength of the
storm at sea is not known. On land
It has been only of moderate Intensity,
though its strength is increasing.
The barometer at Savannah last
night indicated the rapid approach of
the storm, though the center will prob
ably be off the coast. At noon yes
terday the barometer stood at 30.10.
By 8 o'clock last night it had fallen
off to 29.61 and was still falling.
At an early hour yesterday morning
it began raining and this continued for
practically -the entire day. The total
rainfall was .80 of an inch. Shortly
after noon a northeast wind sprung up
and this gradually increased in veloc
ity, blowing as high -as fifteen miles an
hour.
Storui Warning Hoisted.
At 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon the
etorm warnings were hoisted at the
Weather Bureau and at the Morning
News on receipt of -the following tele
gram from the Weather Bureau offi
cials at Washington:
"Holst northeast storm warnings 3
p m. from Apalachicola to Washing
ton. Storm over Florida is rapidly
increasing In intensity and moving
north northeast. High northerly winds
probable to-night and Sunday.”
Shortly afterward Dr. Frankenfleld,
who is following the storm for the
Weather Bureau, telegraphed a sup
plementary message: “Strictest caution
advised to vessels. Severe gales are
probable.”
Cold Wave Following;,
Fallowing In the path of the storm
Is a oold area and a decided falling
off In temperatures Is expected. The
thermometers In Savannah yesterday
showed a steady decline, and at the
last official observation last night mer
cury had slipped down to 51 degrees.
It had dropped several degrees below
this figure at midnight, and was still
falling.
The "killing frost” whioh was first
predicted for Sunday morning, will
probably be delayed by the storm. It
should strike Savannah Monday, and a
succession of days of decidedly lower
temperatures should follow. The fall
In temperatures is not sufficient to
warrant a cold wave signal, but am
ple warning is given of the drop
through the pu'blic press.
As far as the storm Itself is con
cerned there is no danger to Savon
nah. The winds here will not be aJbove
twenty-five to thirty miles an hour,
will not reach that. It is

ALLEGED TRAIN ROBBER
ARRESTED BY MURPHY.
Believed to Have Been Robbing
Freight Cars For a la>ng Time.
—Charged with systematically robbing
the Southern Railway. George Green,
a negro, who uses no less than four
assumed names, has been arrested by
Detective Murpihy, and a quantity of
the stolen property has been recov
ered.
Though the goods have been traced
and clearly shown by the marks on
them to have been taken from the rail
road, the negro denies it and contends
they were given him. Quite a number
of articles have been recovered. How
much in all has been stolen will prob
ably never be known. For some time
the stealing has been going on and
the railroad people were unable to de
termine whether the cars were robbed
here or at Columbia. The last rob
bery took place at the Four Mile Hill,
where the transfer of oars from one
railroad -to another is made, Detective
Murphy thinks. Whether the things
stolen before this were taken here or
at Columbia Is not known.
A great deal of the stolen property
has been disposed of here and the offi
cers at first worked on the theory that
the cars were robbed near Columbia
and the goods brought here to be sold,
or pawned. Whether Green robbed the
cars alone or had accomplices is not
known. One man could easily have
done the work, though the railroad
thieves usually work In gangs.
The cars are robbed at sidings, the
officers say. It is an easy matter at
night for the thief to break open a car
door and dump a case of goods out
while the train Is standing on a side
track. After the train moves on, the
robbers then get -their plunder. Al
most all of the railroads lose a large
amount of goods and most of them go
in this way, the officers think.
Shoes, lace curtains and clothing, all
new, have been disposed of by Green
and recovered by Detective Murphy.
By the marks on the shoes they have
been traced as a part of a shipment
on the Southern. Green is also known
as George Brunson, George Mack,
Lewis Brown and Lewis Bunyan. The
case is still being Investigated and it
has not yet been decided when it will
be brought up in court.
THE FOURTH DISTRICT
GATHERS ON THURSDAY.
First Gnn of the Municipal Cam
paign Will Be Fired Then.
A large crowd is expeoted at the
meeting of the Fourth District Admin
istration Club, which has been called
for Thursday night at the Harris
Street Hall. President James" Mcßride
says the club is stronger than ever,
and he expects the meeting to be the
largest ever held in the Fourth district.
“We are going to see that the Fourth
has its full share of the improvements
made next year.” says the president.
"The closing of the Bilbo canal, and
the opening up of that section of the
city is the most Important thing we
are working f-or.
“That is the logical direction for the
city to grow, and homes will be built
there rapidly, as soon as the oanal is
covered. When we succeed in having
the oanal closed we propose to make a
beautiful driveway through to the
river.
"We will work for a lot of paying in
our section, and also propose to see
that all the parks and squares are put
ln first-class condition. Everything is
harmonious ln the district, and the
meeting Thursday night will be some
thing of a love feast. There will be
a number of 'prominent speakers, and
the municipal campaign will be for
mally opened.”
COMMISSIONS HAVE
NOT YET ARRIVED.
The commissions of Judge Cann of
the Superior Court and Judge Nor
wood of the City Court have not yet
arrived. Only forty-eight hours inter
vene between now and the time limit
for qualifying.
Under the circumstances it is prac
tically impossible for the exact condi
tions of the new law to be complied
with, as far as the two Savannah
judges are concerned, and it is con
ceded that the only way out of the
difficulty is for Gov. Terrell to extend
the time in which the judges may
qualify. This will undoubtedly be
done, especially as the fault lies with
some of the state officials at Atlanta,
who evidently overlooked sending the
commissions.
MUST APPLY IN ADVANCE.
Liquor dealers and green grocers
will be required to apply for their
next year’s licenses during the month
of December instead of waiting until
January as has heretofore been done.
Clerk of Council Creamer says this
will be done to facilitate the work and
to protect the regular dealers. By
having all the applications ln advance,
the licenses can be Issued without de
lay.

The "Ford”
Again Victorious.
Tuesday afternoon three thou
sand spectators at the Empire
City track witnessed an Inter
esting feat of automobile record
breaking that was remarkable
in its way. They saw a little
American-built "Ford" machine
of only 875 pounds, In a five
mile race, defeat two great for
eign-built racing cars of 60 and
90 horse power, that had been
brought to this county to com
pete In the Vanderbilt Cup con
test, and Its performance was
the sensational event of the day.
The “Ford" car, driven in
faultless manner by Frank Ku
lick, was first away at the start;
It cut the corners closer than
either of Its rivals, and led
throughout the race. The time
of the “Ford” was 4 minutes
48 2-5 seconds, it passed the
judge’s stand its own length In
the lead, leaving the record
breaking Renault one-fifth of a
second behind.
The “Michigan”

to be proud of. The first one
sold was to a party from Fitz

it home—over 185 miles of the

that he reached home in record
