and irregular movement of prices was
t gon e irom the market to-day and
celling pressure to take profits was
"much in evidence in the majority of the
usuallx active stocks, especially dur
ln the morning.

advances in inferior grade of indust
rials and railroad . stocks of doubtful
value kept the character of the specula
tion under suspicion.
In the latter part of the day there
was a considerable reversion of in
terest to the standard railroad list.
The issues dealt in continued to show
great variety and many stocks made
their reappearance on the tape after a
long interval. Rather more considera
tion was given to-day also to the
money o utlook, although there was
small change in interest rates.
Money Market Better.
The tone of the money market
however, was called harder.
The strength developed in a
number of stocks was mostly explain
able from special causes. Very specific
rumors of an early impending decision
in the Northern Securities case were

the soft coalers was due to assertions
that their dividend rate would be rais
ed shortly. Amalgamated Copper en
joyed the benefit of a further rise In
the price of copper.

The early heaviness of the steel
group and their late recovery were
connected with the meeting of the
steel billet poo!. The raise in the
Louisville and Nashville'group was ex
plained by the cutting of the Atlantic
Coast Line “melon." The desire to
realize persisted to the last and the
market closed decidedly irregular.
Bonds were strong. Total sales par
value $11,870,000. JTnlted States bonds
were unchanged on call.

Finance Watting for Hnvrner*.
The disabled steamship Finance did
not start for New York yesterday,
towed by the McCauley and the
Dauntless, as had been expected. The
delay was caused by the non-arrival
of two large hawsers that should have
reached this city from New York, but
which failed to show up. The trip
wifi’not be begun until these have ar
rived. These hawsers will be ten’
Inches in circumference and 150 fath
oms long.

According to the record of the Bu
reau Verites the marine losses during
August, 1904, were as follows:. Sailing
vessels —4 German, 7 American, 16
British, 11 French, 4 Dutch, 5 Italian,
3 Norwegian, 3 Russian and 1 Swe
dish; total, 52; steamers—l
German, 11 British, 1 Belgian, 2
French, 1 Italian, 3 Japanese, 1 Nor
wegian, 2 Russian, and 1 Swedish; to
tal, 23. The average loss record of Au
gust fob the past seventeen years is 63
sailing vesellS and eighteen steamers.
In August, 1903, sixty-four sailers and
twenty-six steam vessels were lost.
The steamship City of Atlanta, Capt.
Fisher, of the Ocean Steamship Com
pany’s fleet, will sail for Boston to
morrow, leaving at 12:30 p. m. The
Tallahassee, Capt. Johnson, will take
the Atlanta's regular New York run
and leave for that city Friday at 1:10
p. in.
