KoP er Preaided at Meeting in Ab-
Henee of Rev. R. Lin Cave—Three
session* Will Be Held To-day.
Much interest and enthusiasm was
manifested last night at the opening
sg i ol , of the fifty-sixth annual con
vention of the Christian Church of
Ge, in i at the Bolton Street Christian
Church.
The morning and afternoon trains
brought their quotas of delegates and
there wore present at night more than
forty visitors, among whom were a
number of ladies. The feature of the
evening was the address of Dr. A.
jlelA-an of Cincinnati, secretary of the
Foreign Missionary Society of the
church.
Owing to some confusion between
Eastern and Central time, the meeting
vhiih was scheduled to run by city
time, inclined to the hours kept by the
remainder of the state outside of Sa
vannah. By vote the visitors agreed to
Kt-ef) Savannah hours while here.,
Tin convention was called to order
by Kev. W. H. Roper of 'Macon, vice
president of the association, in the ab
sence of Rev. R. Lin Cave, the presi
dent, who was unavoidably detained.
The praise service was conducted by
Kev. A. R. Miller, pastor of the local
church, who also delivered the address
of welcome. The response was made
by Kev. William Shaw of Atlanta,
State Sunday-school evangelist.
llikCUNsctl Foreign Missions.
"Foreign Missions” was the topic of
the address of Secretary A. McLean of
the foreign missionary society of the
church. Dr. McLean is one of the
most eminent authorities in the church
on the subject of missions, and after
the address one visitor said he had
done more than a hundred preachers
in spreading the gospel. >
Tlic speaker said both the Old and
New Testaments are missionary books
and the church is committed by the
Bible to missionary enterprises. The
work already done was compared with
that which yet remains. Statistics
were given showing what had been ac
complished.
"The Christian Church is a mission
ary church,” said Dr. McLean.
"Twenty-nine years ago there was
not a missionary in the church, but
there has been a wonderful growth.”
Prayer was offered by Dr. McLean,
asking foi; blessings on the mission
work. After a song, the Entertain
ment Committee announced that
homes would be provided immediately
after the service for those who had not
yet been assigned. Cards were dis
tributed for the purpose of securing
the names of the delegates.
Short ytlks were made by a number
of the visiting delegates, expressive
of their pleasure at being present,
and at the auspicious opening of the
convention,’ and for the address JuO*
given.
The question of the use of Central
or Eastern time for the meetings was
taken up, it being agreed that as the
programme had been made out on Sa
vannah time, this should be maintain
ed.

MAJ. COOPER SPOKE
ON WAR IN THE EAST.
Told of Conduct of War lietwml
States la Missouri.
The feature of the meeting of La
fayette McLaws Camp, U. C. V., last
night was the paper presented by
Maj. Cooper, the Confederate who
never surrendered, in which he told of
the war between the states as it had
been conducted in Kansas, Missouri,
and Arkansas.
The paper was highly interesting
and filled with accounts of thrilling
encounters between the opposing
forces. In its general outlines it was
similar to the article published in the
Morning News soon after Maj. Coop
er’s arrival here, the information for
which was furnished by him.
In closing his paper Maj. Cooper
spoke interestingly of his trip
through the British West Indies, and
of the effects of the clashings of the
two races there. The scenes as he de
picted them were almost unbelievable
and served only to more clearly show
the dangers that surround a country
in which the negro is a large element
of population if the lower race is not
properly dealt with. He closed his
paper with an earnest plea for the
men of the South to stand as loyally
and as solidly together as they have
since the early sixties in the mainte
nance of the white man’s supremacy
and the white man’s civilization.
