NEWS OF A DAY IN
GEORGIA’S CAPITAL
PRESIDENT SPENCER SAYS
THERE’S HOPE OF SETTLING THE
RATE QUESTION.
Believe* There Is Chance of Arriv
ing at a Satisfactory Conclusion.
Conservatism on Both Sides Need
ed and Several Meetings Will lie
Necessary—Conference of the Com
mittee With Hailrond Officials
Continues.
Atlanta, Nov. 16.—President Samuel
Spencer of the Southern Railway has
written a letter to a prominent city
official, in which he expresses hope for
a satisfactory arrangement (between
this city and the railroads on the
freight rates question. He believes it
possible to arrive at some agreement,
with the proper conservatism on both
sides, but thinks it will take several
meetings and careful consideration to
do so.
The conference between the railroads
and Atlanta’s committee continued to
day, but nothing was made public.
Further efforts are being made to
get the Louisville and Nashville and
the Atlantic Coast Line to enter the
conference, but this has not yet been
brought about.
Order* to Diahnnd.
Company I of the Fourth Infantry,
et Bainbridge, known as the Bain
bridge Independents, was to-day or
dered mustered out of the state serv
ice by the command of the Governor.
The company was put on probation
some months ago, and when 001. W. G.
Obear went there to inspect it a short
time ago it failed to turn out for In
spection. The result is its disband
ment.
W ill Muster in Cordele Company.
Col. Obear will on Monday, Nov. 21,
muster in anew company at Oordele,
Dooley county. This company will
probably be assigned to the Fourth
Regiment.

Jr., adjutant of the First Cavalry,
Capt. Connerat having removed from
the state. The vacancy has not been
filled.

elected A. C. Lewis of College Station,

weevil specialist, having studied cotton

To Promote Riffe Prnetlee.
Col. Clifford L. Anderson has offered
a |26 gold medal to be contested for on
the rifie ranges by the companies of the
Fifth Regiment. The majors of the
regiment will offer an individual medal
for the highest average score made by

Wynne Mny Go Scot Free.
It is reported lhat the indictment
against M ill Wynne for counterfeiting
and conspiracy in connection with the
recent extensive counterfeiting opera
tions unearthed here, will be nolle
prossed in consideration of the fact
tlfat he turned state’s evidence. Wynne
was the engraver who made the plates
from which the bogus money was
printed. He is now out on a small
bond.
Tlie Governorship.
The Atlanta News, following upon
what is practically an announcement
of the candidacy of Hon. Boykin
Wright of Augusta for Governor two
years hence, has the following edito
rial comment upon the situation:
"Announcement has already been
authoritatively made that Hon. Boy
kin AVright of Augusta will be in the
race for the office of chief executive,
and his friends are active in his Inter
est all over the state. His is the only
positive announcement that has yet
been made, but for a long time it has
been generally understood that Hon.
Clark Howell would enter the cam
paign and that in all probability he
would he opposed by Col. J. H. Estlll
of Savannah.
"These three have constituted the
alignment until the present time, but
within the past few days an effort has
been made on the part of the friends
of Hon. Thomas W. Hardwick, Con
gressman from the Tenth District, to
have him enter the campaign and
make a race for the governorship
squarely on his proposition to disfran
chise the negro in Georgia. The
ctushlng defeat administered by the
Republican party and the feeling on
the part of the general public that the
negro question had been rendered
more acute than ever has encouraged
Mr. Hardwick's friends to urge his
candidacy.”
