STOCKS MADE GAINS MARKET aggressively strong IN LATE TRADING. COPPER FEATURE OF DAY despite first reactionary tendency seen for days. Jump of TII Stock Topped by Sugar'* Bound of 5 1-4 Points and That of Tennessee Coal Which Was 3 R-S —Violent Reaction of These Stocks Cnsettled Lute Mar ket-Bond Market Was Irregular. New York, Nov. 17. —Stocks had their ups and downs to-day, 'but the ups succeeded the downs and .so far outran them as to leave the day’s changes decisively on the side of gains. The later tone of the market became aggressively strong, and the market broadened out materially com pared with the dullness, to which the trading fell away during the morning depression. The weakness was rather acute at the opening, and forced prices lower even than the equivalent of the rul ing prices In London, although the disturbed condition in London was the assigned cause of the weakness. The recovery of opening losses was pretty complete during the first hour. The market was only gradually awakened after that from its waiting attitude, the revival touching first one and then another stock, the general list hanging dull about last night’s level. Copper Day’s Feature. Amalgamated Copper was the fea ture of the day. To-day’s reports from the copper market pointed to the first reactionary tendency perceptible for many days. But this did not discour age the buying of Amalgamated Cop per in company with the buoyancy of copper shares all over the world. Its 3% points Jump was over matched by Sugar's 5*4 point bound and the 3% point rise In Tennessee Coal, but the violent reactionary slump In these stocks unsettled the late market, the close being feverish and Irregular, in spite of Union Pa cific’s sustained rise of over 2 points. Active Railroad Stocks. Southern Pacific, St. Paul. Chesa peake and Ohio and Norfolk and West ern were the most prominent stocks to get as much as a point over last night, but the recovery from the low point of the morning measured a consider able improvement. Weakness in the early bond market, In sympathy with stocks, gave that de partment of the market an irregular tone. Total sales, par value, $11,045,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. The delay in arriving was due, according to the report of Capt. Stasse, to bad weather encountered sev eral times on the trip across from Rot terdam. The worst of this weather was encountered last Saturday and Sunday. The tug H. M. C. Smith of the Pro peller Tow Boat Company, which has been on Rourke’s marine railway for some time undergoing a general over hauling, came off the railway yester day afternoon. HECKER HAS RESIGNED. He Didn’t Like the Climate of the Canal Kona. Washington, Nov. 17.—Frank J. Hecker has resigned es a member of the Panama Canal Commission. Mr. Hecker in his letter of resignation says the climate of the canal zone Is so un favorable to his health that continued residence there would be at the risk of a physical breakdown. President Roosevelt accepted the resignation In a complimentary letter. There has been some speculation re garding the successor of Col. Hecker and several names have been suggest ed, among them Senator Cockrell of Missouri and Judge Charles E. Ma goon, who is now attorney of the com mission. President Roosevelt has not given consideration to the question of a successor, and the appointment may not be made immediately. Dolphin Arrived. Washington, Nov. 17.—Capt. Gibbons, commanding the United States dis patch boat Dolphin, to-day reported the arrival of that vessel St Key West.
