Hall to Cuba.
New York, Nov. 19.—T0-day’a stock
market contested the reactionary ten
dency which developed yesterday, but
prices showed reluctance to advance.
\ here was a sprightly upward move
ment after the appearance of the bank
statement, but it was not held, and
the closing was irregular and generally
below the best.
During the first hour many promi
nent stocks went below last night’s
level. The bank statement seemed to
reassure sentiment to eome extent. The
decline in cash was rather larger than
indicated by the vveek’s currency move
ment, but the loan contraction reduced
the deposits and the reserve require
ment so as to raise the surplus slightly.
Hut some misgivings over the money
outlook was reflected In the late re
newal of the pressure to sell.
More Gold lor Paris.
The bank statement reflects this
Aveek's gold outgo to France only in
part, owing to the average system of
computation. To-day’s shipments both
to Paris and to Cuba are not reflected
at all and go over to next Aveek's
statement. The bespeaking of all the
available gold bars at the assay office
for export to France next week shows
the unsatisfied requirement from that
source and the $1,500,000 shipment ar
ranged for next week to Cuba, is also
to be reckoned with. It Is obvious
that the rveek has made large encroach
ment on the available supply of loan
able funds.
The closing tone was irregular. To

WARE & LELASD’S STOCK LETTER.
New York. Nov. 19. —The market
was dull to-day, due in the first place
to the Aveakness that was displayed
yesterday afternoon, which made both
the traders and the public timid about
new commitments over Sunday, and
a great many traders were absent on
the account of the football game. The
undertone Avas strong and indications
are that we will not have much, if
any further declines. It seems strange
that the public should become uneasy
on a decline of 1 per cent, after such
enormous advances. We think it
Avould be desirable to have prices a
little lo Aver, and it Avould Invite new
interest in the market, and would help
what we predict—higher prices. The
lower prices usually favor Southern
Railway, Rock Island and Erie, Pa
cific stocks are destined to sell high
er, and Ave are told that Union Pa
cific avIH sell at 120 next week. Indus
trials will continue in favor, and we
think the general business conditions
favor higher prices for these special
ties. The bank statement to-day Avas
a good one. in fact, much better than
anticipated.
