IN MEMOHIAM.
GEORGE HAWKINS.
1833-1304.
On the 16th of November, Just as
the last call of the evening Angelus
sounded from the tower of the Cathe
dral where so often he had sought his
God, the soul of George Hawkins en
tered upon its everlasting residence in
his Father's house.
The end of a good life is not death,
and, though we pray, "Lord, give to
thy servant, George, perpetual light!”
we believe the happiness of eternity
is already his for all of time he freely
gave to gaining it. Pure of heart,
across his lips there never passed a
dark or unkind word, and no man
was so abandoned that he could not
find some good with which to credit
him. Gentle, modest, faithful to the
most trivial trust; happiest in the
home wherein he had shrined his love
and holiest thoughts; loyal to his
friends, true to his principles; unfal
tering in his allegiance to his God—he
left to the world an example of per
fect Christian manhood.
Mr. Hawkins was born in Wexford,
Ireland, in 1833, and came to this city
in 1852, always residing here, with the
exception of the four years he served
his adopted country during the Civil
War. He was a member of Company
F, First Georgia Regiment, and bore
to the last home of his body the
wreath and flags with which the Lost
Cause still honors its dead.
For about forty years Mr. Hawkins
was in the employ of the late Abram
Minis, where he was tried friend as
well as trusted employe.
Death found him fully prepared, as
he ever was, for the crisis of life, and
he passed out tranquilly—“full of
years and the love of his fellow men.”
God send him rest! M. E. H.
