NEWS OF A DAY IN
GEORGIA’S CAPITAL
FREIGHT PATES AGREEMENT
HOT YET REACHED by ATLANTA
and the railroads.
Atlanta'* Coramllfft Rejected Iht
Proposition Made l>y the Kail
road Representative* Offered
Counter Propositions. II hich II ere
Deelined by the Railroad Men.
Filial Conference Is to Be Held
To-day. With What Result I* Not
Predicted.
Atlanta, Dec. 6.—After an all-day
conference, the Atlanta committee and
the railroad representatives are just
as far apart as ever on the question
of freight rates revision.
"The matter stands just where it did
when we started," was about all Chair
man J. G. Oglesby had to say at the
close of this afternoon's meeting.
While all the parties to the confer
ence refuse to discuss the proceedings,
It is known in a general way how the
matter stands. The railroad repre
sentatives made a tentative proposal
to the Atlanta committee at the open
ing of the conference. The reductions
offered were not satisfactory, and the
Atlantians indicated their refusal to
accept such a basis of settlement. The
discussion then continued during the
afternoon, the Atlanta committee mak
ing some proposals on its own account.
In separate meetings to-night the rail
road men and the Atlanta committee
considered the situation in order to
get ready for the tinal conference to
morrow. If the two views presented
at to-morrow's meeting come near
enough together, there may be a set
tlement. If not, then matters will re
main at a standstill, until the courts
decide the status of the question.
Police Chief Looking for Him.
Chief of Police Scott Steele of
Crawfordsvllle, Ind., is here investi
gating the mysterious disappearance
from a Pullman sleeper between Rome
and Atlanta of John Remley, a
wealthy Indiana planter, as a result
of which his wife and others members
of his family are prostrated in a san
itarium in Jacksonville, Fla. Remley,
who is 71 years old and a retired
farmer, was on his way to Florida
with his wife, his brother Daniel and
his wife. Remley sat on the side of
his berth and started to undress. He
got up and walked towards the end
of the car. That was the last seen of
him.
Chief Scott found no trace here of
the missing man, though he offered a.
reward for information that would
lead to his discovery. To-night Scott
left for Jacksonville in the hope of
getting some trace of him.
There is no accounting for Remley's
action.
“Come When You Can.”
President R. F. Maddox of the At
lanta Chamber of Commerce to-day
wrote a formal letter to President
Roosevelt inviting him to visit Atlan
ta next May during the session of the
National Association of Manufactur
ers. Mr. Maddox states that if the
time is not satisfactory to the Presi
dent the city will be glad to entertain
him at any time that would suit his
convenience.
lloth Feet Crashed.
S. A. Neal, yard conductor of the
Georgia Railroad, was caught under
a moving train at an early hour this
morning and had both feet so badly
crushed that they will have to be am
putated.
To Inspect the State Rond.
Gov. Terrell, Attorney General Hart
and Controller General Wright will
leave the city tn the morning over the
Western and Atlantic Railroad for
Chattanooga, for the purpose of mak
ing their annual Inspection of the
state road, as provided for under the
lease contract. The road Is said to be
now In splendid condition. The state
officials will return to the city Thurs
day at noon.
For 1.-45 R Pensions.
Pension Commissioner J. W. Lind
sey has just completed his considera
tion of new applications for pensions
to go on the rolls for 1905. He has
approved a total of 1,455 new applica
tions out of 2,717. Of these approved,
1.088 are soldiers and 357 are widows.
Estimating a loss from the rolls of
1904 by deaths, amounting to 900, there
will still be an Increase next year of
550 pensioners. As no Increase was
made in the amount appropriated for
pensions over last year, it is apparent
that there will be a deficit of some
thing like $33,000, which the Legisla
ture will be called on to make good.
Const Cine First to Pay.
The Atlantic Coast Line is the first
of the big railroad systems to pay Its
state taxes, a check having been re
ceived at the state treasury to-day for
$50,834.92. Only the Central and
Southern pay more taxes than the
Coast Line.
The Next Governor from Sooth
Georgia.
Fitzgerald Enterprise: We like
Clark Howell, and if he is ever Gov
ernor of the Empire State of the South
every Georgian will be proud of the
chief executive, but South Georgia
must furnish the next Governor, and
Clark is young enough to wait. But If he
Just must be, we advise him to move
to Savannah, where he will find a
royal welcome, and a change that Mrs
Howell, would, no doubt, enjoy. Come
to South Georgia, young man.

WOMAN WAS CHASED
BY THE TRACK DOGS.
Mne Miles They Ran Her Before She
Was Brnuitht to Bay.
Columbus, Ga.. Dec. 6.—Eva Hogg,
a negro woman who escaped from the
Muscogee county chaingang, was
chased nine miles with dogs before she
was recaptured.
She had been sent to the gang for
eighteen months for stealing clothing
from various Columbus families. Yes
terday afternoon when she went to a
spring for a bucket of water she drop
ped the bucket and quietly slipped Into
the woods. Three dogs were placed on
the trail a few hours later and follow
ed her nine miles. She was finally
found in a ditch and fearing that the
dogs might bite her, she scrambled out
of the ditch and ran towards Supt.
Posey, who ran to meet the woman,
and got to her in time to prevent the
dogs from harming her.
Sl'IT OVER A HOUSE COLLAR
Occnpieii tle United State* Court In
Macon.
Macon, Dec. 6.—lt has been announc
ed that Judge Emory Speer will open
court in Valdosta next Monday.
The United States court has been in
session in Macon since Monday, but
none of the regular business of the
term has been taken up, matters of a
special character being considered, of
which one of the most important Is a
petition for injunction brought by
Couch Bros, and J. J. Eagan Company
of Atlanta against J. O. Barnett of
Americus, asking that the defendant
be enjoined from making and selling a
patented horse collar for which the
plaintiffs claim they have the exclusive
patent right.
STARVED TO DEATH.
Our text to-day is the story of the
miser who taught his ass to live on
straw, of which he gave him a smaller
portion every day.
Just as the miser had got him so
trained as to eat one straw a day—.
the poor ass died.
He is an ass who starves himself to
death—as thousands are doing, mis
led by foolish teachers—because their
stomachs have become too weak,
through neglect or disease, to do the
work which nature has provided for
their stomachs to do.
Because the engine is out of gear,
would you consigp it to the junk
heap?
Why, no! Mend it!
Commit slow suicide because your
digestive organs leak?
Certainly not! Take Stuart’s Dys
pepsia Tablets.
One thing is sure as shooting.
You can never get anew stomach.
You must mend it, or it will lead
you a miserable existence.
The only way to mend it is to take
Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets.
This has been practically and scien
tifically demonstrated by the many
thousands whom Stuart's Dyspepsia
Tablets have positively cured, after
every other treatment of medicine,
mineral waters, pills and slow, suicidal
starvation had failed.
These methods are all unscientific—
therefore false.
Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets are scien
tific—therefore true and successful.
Having cured so many thousands—
many of whom doubtless have suf
fered more than you do—do we claim
too much when we say that Stuart's
Dyspepsia Tablets will surely do good
to you?
Surely not.
Especially when we make it plain
that no promise is made to cure more
than one disease—Dyspepsia.
Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets are a
positive cure for Just this one disease.
They are a scientific combination of
ingredients which search out the weak
spots in all the digestive organs and
make them strong and well.
They have an immediate digestive
action on undigested food, and thus,
while curing weak organs, they at the
same time help them to do their work.
They thus stand for ail that is good
in the medical treatment of Dyspep
sia. ancs for nothing that Is bad.
They are not a fad but a fact.
They are safe, pleasant, certain and
permanent, and can be taken by the
most delicate Invalids without fear of
harmful results.
