SIG DONATION
FORJJHARITY
MADE BY CITY COUNCIL
gave almost in addition
TO REGILAK FIND.
Several Churches, *he L'niou Society
and the Savannah Port Sodrty
Were All Made Donations With
Which to Pay Taxes or Paving
Assessments— The City (lives Over
gS.OOO to the Charity Fund and
$14,400 to Hospitals.
In addition to the regular annual
appropriations which the city makes
to charity, Council last night, by spe
cial resolutions, appropriated *2,705.33
to charitable institutions of Savannah,
the money to be applied to the pay
ment of taxes, paving assessments or
other debts due the city.
The regular charity fund of the city
for 1904 was $8,138 and $14,400 was do
nated to the hospitals. The appro
priations made last night are in ad
dition to these, making Savannah's to
tal charity fund larger by far than al
most any other city of its size in the
country.
In every case where an appropriation
was made, the Institution owes the ci‘y
the amount of money which was do
nated. It really amounts to relieving
the institutions from paying these
bills, though that cannot be legally
done. Officers of the institutions will
exchange receipts for thfe appropria
tions for receipts from the city treas
urer for the payment of the taxes, or
other debts. The money will never
leave the treasury, but the donations
are none the less real, for if they were
not made the city would have to col
lect the money due.
The Union Society was donated the
sum of $1,118.95, that being the amount
of taxes due by the society to the city.
The resolution making the appropria
tion was introduced by the Finance
Committee.
A resolution by the same committee
was also passed appropriating to the
Savannah Port Society the sum of
$356.25, that being the amount of the
taxes due by that organization. The
other appropriations were all made
by one resolution, also introduced by
tlie Finance Committee.
All of the appropriations under this
resolution are to churches and are to
be applied to the payment of assess
ments for street paving. The resolu
tion begins as follows:
"It appearing that certain sums of
money, hereinafter named, have been
assessed against certain churches in
the city of Savannah for their propor
tion of street paving along their front
ages, and it being clear to Council that
said churches are institutions which
tend to the inculcation of morality, obe
dience to law and good order generally,
therefore, it is resolved, etc.”
Following are the sums appropriated,
together with the churches to which
they go: Grace Methodist Episcopal
Church, $214.14; Lutheran Church of
the Ascension, $183.56; Duffy Street
Baptist Church, $186.92; St. Patrick’s
Church, $331.74; St. Michael's Church,
$165.74; Grace Methodist Church, $148.03.
It will be noticed that the Grace
Methodist Church appears twice in the
donations. This is due to the fact that
two streets by the church. Park avenue
and Jefferson, were paved.
NEW WORTHY^PRESIDENT '
WILL ADDRESS EAGLES.
At a meeting of the Eagles, to be
held to-night, Mr. Joseph S. Walker,
the recently elected worthy president,
will deliver an address to the members
on charitable organizations.
Mr. Walker is prominent in Pythian
ism and Odd Fellowship, and it is hi 6
purpose to make the Eagles second to
no secret order in the city. He will
be installed, with the other recently
elected officers, at the meeting to
night, and will at once begin his plans
to bring the Eagles to the front.
